Give China More Credit - Ms Gaines of FMG

AFR reported that Andrew Forrest’s Fortescue Metals Group expects Chinese steel demand to remain strong for the remainder of the year but has warned Australia not to underestimate the importance of stronger ties with Beijing as the threat of a trade war hangs over the global economy. Fortescue chief executive Ms Elizabeth Gaines said that east coast views dominated discussion on the relationship with Beijing while not enough emphasis was put on a trade relationship integral to the resources industry in Western Australia and the Australian economy. She endorsed China’s belt and road initiative as a means to underpin continued strength in demand for iron ore and enhance the ability of both the WA and federal governments to run budget surpluses.

Ms Gaines said that “I think belt-road is an opportunity. We certainly view it as an opportunity because we know that the belt and road initiative is driving growth in infrastructure, which is driving demand for steel, which drives demand for iron ore.”

Ms Gaines said Fortescue would leave policy for the policy makers but called for a more balanced debate on China with a full appreciation and recognition of the trading relationship. She said that “You very rarely read about that [the importance of trade with China to the economy] but you read about some of the other issues and concerns around China. I'm sure Treasury forecasts two years ago would have been predicting that right now the iron ore price would probably be USD 55 a tonne and we are sitting here and it is USD 126 a tonne, so clearly in a return to surplus for both the WA economy and nationally a big contributor is the strength of commodity prices and certainty the iron ore price.”

Ms Gaines said east coast-centric views and policy debates did not fairly reflect WA’s important and multi-dimensional relationship with China. She said that “We need to ensure that narrative about Australia’s relationship with China reflects the experience of WA and its resources sector and is not driven solely by the east coast perspective.”

She added that Fortescue’s success was built around longstanding relationships with Chinese customers, investors and banks, and included AUD 1 billion in procurement from China.

AkzoNobel verhoogt investeringen in China

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) AkzoNobel schaalt zijn productieomvang in het Chinese Changzhou op met drie nieuwe productielijnen. Dit maakte de verfproducent dinsdag bekend.

Met deze investering is drie miljoen euro gemoeid en ondersteunt de Chinese operaties voor coating in poedervorm voor de automotivesector, waarmee het bedrijf zijn levering aan lokale partijen kan verbeteren.

AkzoNobel produceert sinds 2012 vloeibare verfproducten in Changzhou en sinds 2018 ook verf in poedervorm voor de gehele oostelijke regio van China.

Het aandeel AkzoNobel noteerde dinsdag op een rood Damrak 1,5 procent lager op 81,53 euro.

Geely geeft winstwaarschuwing af

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) De Chinese autofabrikant Geely Automobile, onder meer eigenaar van Volvo, verwacht dat de winst in de eerste zes maanden van het jaar circa 40 procent lager zal uitkomen in vergelijking met dezelfde periode vorig jaar. Dit meldde de Chinese autoproducent dinsdag.

In de eerste zes maanden van 2018 boekte het concern een nettowinst van 6,67 miljard yuan, ofwel circa 900 miljoen euro, wat een nettowinst suggereert van circa 540 miljoen euro in de eerste helft van 2019.

Het aandeel Geely noteerde 3,8 procent lager.

VS en China pogen onderhandelingen te herstarten

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) De toponderhandelaars van de Verenigde Staten en China zullen deze week met elkaar praten in een poging de onderhandelingen weer vlot te trekken.

De presidenten Donald Trump en Xi Jinping besloten tijdens de laatste G20-top in Japan om de onderhandelingen weer formeel op te starten.

Onder meer de Amerikaanse handelsgezant Robert Lighthizer zal deze week per telefoon contact hebben met het Chinese kamp, en als dit goed verloopt zullen mogelijk fysieke ontmoetingen volgen, vermoedelijk in Beijing, zei een bron tegen The Wall Street Journal.

China: Facebook-munt moet onder toezicht

PEKING (AFN/BLOOMBERG) - De sprong van de Amerikaanse techreus Facebook om zijn eigen cryptomunt libra te creëren moet onder toezicht van monetaire autoriteiten worden geplaatst. Daarvoor pleit Mu Changchun, adjunct-directeur van de betaalafdeling van de centrale bank van China. Zijn kritiek volgt kort op een kritische blik op de ontwikkeling door bestuurders bij de Europese Centrale Bank (ECB) en de Britse toezichthouder.

Mu wees er op dat libra-transacties, net als betalingen met andere cryptomunten, niet beperkt worden door landsgrenzen en dat digitale munten gebruikt kunnen worden voor leningen. Ze zouden het monetaire beleid kunnen verstoren en valutarisico's met zich mee kunnen brengen in economieën met een wisselvallige lokale munt.

Facebook heeft volgens Mu bovendien niet duidelijk gemaakt hoe het zich inzet tegen financiering van witwaspraktijken en voor het bestrijden van terrorismefinanciering. Ook is niet bekend hoe Facebook privacy van zijn gebruikers zal beschermen. Hij denkt dat de munt niet duurzaam zal zijn zonder de steun en het toezicht van centrale banken.

Hebei Province Moves 2019 Industrial Capacity Cutting Targets Forward

Reuters reported that China’s top steelmaking province of Hebei has moved up the target dates for cutting industrial capacity and relocating plants by two months to the end of October. The province also pushed forward the elimination of small coal-fired industrial boilers and ultra-low emission upgrades at steel mills. The province said “There remains a relatively big gap for us to reach the annual air quality goal. So we decided to adopt more targeted and effective measures to control air pollution.”

Hebei earlier planned to eliminate steel capacity of 14 million tonnes, coal capacity of 10 million tonnes, coke capacity of 3 million tonnes and coal-fired power capacity of 500 megawatts by the end of 2019. It also planned to shut down or move 19 high-emission industrial plants in steel, chemicals and pharmaceutical sectors by the year end.

The province has pledged to reduce the amount of air pollution, especially the amount of hazardous particulate matter of 2.5 microns or less, known as PM2.5, which can lodge deep in the lungs when inhaled. In the first six months of 2019, the average PM 2.5 concentration in Hebei was at the same level as last year at 58 micrograms per cubic meter, despite the extension of industrial production curbs. The province has set a target of 53 micrograms per cubic meter for this year.

China Claims to Have Slashed Lithium Production Costs

If battery development and production is a matter of being competitive in the US, it is a life or death deal in China. Literally. Mostly because of the country's huge megalopolises, some with more than 30 million people. The high concentration of combustion engine cars in these relatively small places causes serious breathing problems, hence the country's concern in having more and more EVs. And it has recently achieved a major breakthrough in lithium production, according to the South China Morning Post.

While lithium international prices are currently between USD 12,000 and 20,000 USD per metric tonne, the Chinese government claims to have achieved to reduce its production to USD 2,180 with a new extraction process.

It is not clear if the selling prices of lithium are close to the production costs, since they are according to the South China Morning Post a very well guarded secret. If they are, that would represent a slash of 81.8% in costs when you consider the lowest price for the metric ton of this mineral. If you take the highest price, the cost cut would reach 89.1%.

Apparently, lowering production costs will just help improve profit margins. Qinghai Lithium Industry, a state-owned company that already uses this new method of extracting lithium, has reportedly managed to increase profits by more than 50%. It expects to do even better with further improvements to the process.

Anyway, specialists interviewed by the Chinese newspaper inform that production costs now released by the Chinese government are among the lowest in the market. If not the lowest ever.

Lithium production is complicated due to the sophisticated chemical processes involved in separating this element from others. This is especially true of magnesium, which shares very similar ionic properties with lithium.

Apart from the Qinghai Lithium Industry, China may also benefit as a whole. Although it concentrates most lithium processing plants and produces close to 70 percent of all the world’s lithium-ion batteries, the country has a very low production of the metal itself. Something that the new process may help to change by attracting more companies to this part of the business.

China & Laos to Boost Cooperation On Road, Bridge Construction

Xinhua reported that China and Laos are set to boost cooperation and technical assistance in the construction of roads and bridges to facilitate the faster and safer implementation of high quality projects. Representatives of Lao and Chinese construction companies and Lao government officials gathered in Lao capital Vientiane to exchange experiences and get feedback on developments in new construction techniques, technology and materials. The meeting was organized by the Lao Ministry of Public Works and Transport in cooperation with Guangxi Liugong Machinery Co Ltd and VK Group, local marketing agent of Guangxi Liugong.

Mr VK Group, a Chinese JV in Laos, told Xinhua, during the meeting, participants discussed and exchanged ideas on four main topics, comprise of the road development plan and strategy of Laos, management of machinery and vehicle imports in Laos, technologically advanced machinery for road and bridge construction in China, and the material supply plans for road construction, etc.

China en VS volgen afspraken G20-top op

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) De Chinese vicepremier Liu He heeft een telefoongesprek gevoerd met de Amerikaanse handelsgezant Robert Lighthizer en de minister van financiën Steven Mnuchin. Dat meldde het Amerikaanse ministerie van handel woensdag.

Het telefoongesprek, dat dinsdagavond plaatsvond, was gericht op het doorvoeren van de overeenstemming die door de presidenten van de twee landen vorige maand in Japan werd bereikt, stelde het ministerie in een verklaring.

De Chinese minister van handel Zhong Shan nam ook deel aan het gesprek, volgens de verklaring.

De Amerikaanse president Donald Trump en de Chinese president Xi Jinping spraken in juni op de G20-top in het Japanse Osaka af dat de formele onderhandelingen over de handelsbetrekkingen zouden worden hervat.

De onderhandelingen zijn gericht op het oplossen van de bestaande onenigheden op handelsgebied tussen de twee landen, zei een woordvoerder van de Amerikaanse regering.

Chinese inflatie stabiel in juni

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) De inflatie van de consumentenprijzen in China is vorige maand op een gelijk niveau gebleven, omdat snellere stijgingen van voedingsmiddelen werden geneutraliseerd door vertraging van de prijsstijging van andere consumptiegoederen.

De consumentenprijsindex voor juni liet een prijsstijging zien van 2,7 procent, vergeleken met een jaar eerder. Dat is hetzelfde cijfer als voor mei, meldde het nationale Chinese statistiekbureau woensdag.

Het cijfer kwam overeen met de verwachtingen van economen.

De prijzen van voedingsmiddelen stegen 8,3 procent in juni, iets sneller dan de 7,7 procent in mei. Met name de prijzen van vers fruit en varkensvlees schoten omhoog met 43 en 21 procent op jaarbasis. In mei stegen die prijzen ook al zeer sterk, met 27 en 18 procent. Deze twee items waren samen goed voor 1,16 procentpunt van het totale inflatiecijfer van 2,7 procent.

De prijzen van niet-voedingsmiddelen stegen met 1,4 procent, tegen 1,6 procent in mei. Lagere benzine- en dieselprijzen drukten de prijsstijgingen.

Exclusief de volatiele prijzen voor voeding en energie was de kerninflatie in juni stabiel op 1,6 procent, gelijk aan mei.

Chinese producentenprijzen dalen

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) De Chinese producentenprijzen zijn in juni gedaald. Dit bleek woensdag uit cijfers van het Chinese bureau voor de statistiek.

De producentenprijzen daalden in juni met 0,3 procent, ten opzichte van mei.

Vergeleken met een jaar eerder waren de prijzen in juni stabiel. Economen rekenden vooraf op een stijging op jaarbasis van 0,2 procent.

In mei stegen de producentenprijzen nog met 0,2 procent op maandbasis en met 0,6 procent op jaarbasis.

'Groei Chinese economie 6 tot 6,5 procent'

MILAAN (AFN/RTR) - De Chinese overheid vertrouwt er op dat de economie van het land zal blijven groeien met 6 tot 6,5 procent per jaar. Dat heeft de Chinese minister van Financiën Liu Kun gezegd op een bijeenkomst in Milaan.

Tijdens een financiële dialoog tussen afgevaardigden van Italië en China zei Liu dat protectionisme de wereldwijde economische groei kan schaden. Peking zal zich volgens hem hard blijven maken voor afspraken binnen multilaterale organisaties zoals Wereldhandelsorganisatie WTO en de G20.

Liu sprak niet over het aanhoudende handelsconflict tussen China en de VS. De economische grootmachten hebben het handelsoverleg onlangs weer hervat.

US DoC Finds Dumping & Countervailable Subsidization of Imports of Steel Wheels from China

US Department of Commerce announced the affirmative final determinations in the antidumping duty and countervailing duty investigations of imports of certain steel wheels 12 to 16.5 inches in diameter from China, finding that exporters from China have sold certain steel wheels 12 to 16.5 inches in diameter at less than fair value in the United States at rates of 38.27 to 44.35%. In addition, Commerce determined that exporters from China received countervailable subsidies at rates from 386.45 to 388.31%.

In 2017, US imports of certain steel wheels 12 to 16.5 inches in diameter from China were valued at an estimated USD 73.8 million.

The petitioners are Worthington Industries and Manchester Tank & Equipment Co.

The U.S. International Trade Commission is currently scheduled to make its final injury determinations on or about August 15, 2019. If the ITC makes affirmative final injury determinations, Commerce will issue AD and CVD orders. If the ITC makes negative final determinations of injury, the investigations will be terminated and no orders will be issued.

GMS Market Commentary on Shipbreaking in India in Week 27 - SODDEN!

Whilst constant monsoon rains have battered Mumbai, reportedly leading to flooding and the closure of many banks and businesses, the ship recycling market in Alang too has remained in a sodden state this week. Over the last few weeks, local steel plate prices have collapsed by as much as USD 25/LDT (USD 12/Ton this week alone), leading to very few serious offers forthcoming, despite the number of (particularly HKC green) candidates already in Cash Buyer hands that are available for immediate purchase by Alang Buyers.

Whilst many HKC yards have started to fill up with an interesting array of units (VLCCs, FPSOs, drill ships, pipe layers, chip carriers, reefers etc.) at decent numbers, it may not be long before prices fall out of reach of an emerging Bangladesh once again, so the Indian summer (or at least June) appears to be over for now.

2 Killed, 13 Injured In North China Coal Mine Accident - Report

Xinhua reported that two people were killed and thirteen injured in a coal mine accident in north China's Shanxi Province.

According to Shanxi administration of coal mine safety, the accident happened on Sunday afternoon in a coal mine of Shanxi Tongmei Group, when poisonous gas leaked to a working platform, killing two miners and injuring 13.

Boskalis Cracks Asian Offshore Wind Market

Boskalis and Hwa Chi Construction Co have established a joint venture to transport and install offshore foundations at two wind farms in Taiwan developed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners. The Changfang and the Xidao offshore wind farms have a combined capacity of 600MW and are expected to be completed by 2023.

Mr Marcel van Bergen, Director Offshore Wind at Boskalis, said the project is a major milestone as it marks the company's entry into the offshore wind power market in Asia.

The wind farms are located off the coast of Changhua County and will comprise 62 wind turbines installed on jacket foundations. The turbines will be transported and installed by CSBC-DEME Wind Engineering, a joint venture between DEME Group and CSBC Corporation.

CIP is developing three offshore wind projects off the Changhua coast in the Taiwan Strait with a combined capacity of 1.5GW. The wind farms will feature the MHI Vestas 9MW wind turbine platform.

Beijing eist opheffing sancties Huawei

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Het Chinese ministerie van handel heeft er donderdag bij Washington opnieuw op aangedrongen dat de sancties tegen het Chinese Huawei worden opgeven. Dit meldde The Wall Street Journal donderdag.

Bronnen bekend met de situatie meldden eerder aan de Amerikaanse zakenkrant dat de Amerikaanse minister van financiën, Steven Mnuchin, er de afgelopen dagen bij Amerikaanse leveranciers op aandringt de verkoop aan het Chinese bedrijf ter hervatten.

De stap volgt op een concessie van de Amerikaanse president Donald Trump aan de Chinese president Xi Jinping tijdens de G20-top eind juni in het Japanse Osaka, waarbij leveranties aan Huawei konden worden hervat zolang dit niet de nationale veiligheid zou aantasten.

Dajia slokt Chinese verzekeraar Anbang op

PEKING (AFN/RTR) - Het Chinese Anbang gaat verder onder de naam Dajia Insurance. De nieuwe, door de Chinese overheid opgerichte verzekeraar Dajia neemt alle verzekeringsactiviteiten over van Anbang, dat in opspraak raakte vanwege een grote fraudezaak waarbij de topman achter de tralies verdween.

De Chinese toezichthouder voor de financiële sector maakte donderdag bekend groen licht te hebben gegeven voor de overname door Dajia. Vivat bereikte eerder al een akkoord over de verkoop van het Nederlandse Vivat aan branchegenoot NN Group en investeerder Athora.
