China’s first 100MW molten salt solar plant hits maximum power

China’s first 100MW molten salt solar thermal power plant has successfully hit its maximum power levels. Built by Beijing Shouhang IHW Resources Saving Technology, the three billion yuan (GBP 345 million) project in Dunhuang uses 12,000 mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto a receiver, which is then used to heat the molten salt.

It is capable of generating 390 million kWh of clean power each year, enough to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 350,000 metric tonnes engineers at the facility say it has already reached or exceeded its designed values.

Unlike the intermittency associated with traditional solar energy systems, the molten salt allows energy to be stored and later used to generate power on demand.

Mr Huang Wenbo, Vice-Chairman of the company, said the power plant, which is among China’s first batch of solar thermal power generation demonstration projects, has proven its ability to operate in “the harshest environmental conditions” across all different seasons.

Researchers suggest a new design of rechargeable battery created using salt could boost efficiency and reduce costs.

Europe Continues To Welcome Chinese Investment In Its Ports - Report

South China Morning Post reported that the United States is becoming increasingly obsessed with Chinese activities in commercial seaports of allied countries because of the risk they would pose to its navy. Nonetheless, calls for European allies to avoid backing China’s global maritime ambitions and the Belt and Road Initiative continue to fall on deaf ears. At last week’s Transport Logistic fair in Munich, the Italian port of Genoa signed a cooperation agreement with the Chinese port of Shenzhen, the world’s fourth-largest container facility.

Together, China’s Cosco Shipping Ports and Qingdao Port International Development have a 49.9 per cent stake in two terminals in Genoa. Other European operators are also engaging with Chinese counterparts.

Europe’s progressive integration into the belt and road plan, which is aimed at reviving the ancient Silk Road and creating a China-centric network of trade relationships across Eurasia and beyond, has alarmed the administration of US President Mr Donald Trump.

In its annual report to Congress on China’s military power, released, the US Department of Defence said the belt and road investments could help the Chinese navy gain access to “selected foreign ports to pre-position the necessary logistics support to sustain naval deployments in waters as distant as the Indian Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean”.

To US strategists, China is seeking control of overseas infrastructure to project and support naval power at greater distances. The Chinese could achieve such a goal by gaining preferred access to foreign commercial ports through belt and road projects, as well as through some exclusive logistics facilities.

China opened its first and, until now, only overseas military base in Djibouti two years ago. The tiny country in the Horn of Africa also hosts a US naval facility.

According to the Pentagon, the Chinese could establish a second naval outpost near the Pakistani commercial port of Gwadar, which is being operated by China Overseas Ports Holding Company. The Trump administration sounded the alarm on Chinese-managed European ports as Italy became the first of the Group of Seven nations to sign up for the Belt and Road Initiative in March, and the Italian ports of Genoa and Trieste signed cooperation agreements with state-owned China Communications Construction Company.

However, Nato allies in Europe appear unwilling to block Chinese investment in their port facilities. The Dutch port of Rotterdam where Cosco has a 35 per cent stake in a terminal recently signed a declaration of intent with Chengdu International Railway Port Investment to improve connectivity between Europe and China.

Formosa Ha Tinh Steel May Put Expansion Plans on Hold Due To Influx of Chinese Cheap Steel

The Epoch Times reported that a Vietnamese steelmaker Formosa Ha Tinh Steel recently expressed that its business could soon be hurt by an influx of cheap Chinese steel, as Chinese steelmakers try to dump excess capacity overseas, and that its production expansion plans, including a proposal to build another blast furnace, could be put on hold as a result of such market changes. FHS Chairman Mr Chen Yuan-cheng in an interview with Nikkei said “We will carefully examine the plan as uncertainties are growing over the outlook of the US China trade war. The final decision about the third furnace could be made by the end of the year after talking with the company’s three main shareholders and the Vietnamese government.”

FHS currently has two blast furnaces, which involves the process of smelting iron ore to produce crude iron, allowing the company to produce 7.1 million tonnes of crude steel per year. The planned construction of the third blast furnace would push its production capacity to 22.5 million tonnes per year.

Formosa Ha Tinh Steel, founded in 2008, is based in the Vung Ang Economic Zone in Vietnam’s central province of Ha Tinh. FHS’s biggest shareholder is Taiwanese plastics manufacturer Formosa Plastic, with over 70 percent shares, followed by Taiwan Steel with 20 percent, and Japanese JFE Steel with 4 percent.

Vietnam is one of these overseas markets targeted by China since the country is Southeast Asia’s biggest steel consumer. Contrary to the slowing Chinese economy, Vietnam’s economy has enjoyed strong growth in recent years, with average GDP growth of 6 to 7 percent. At the same time, the country’s steel consumption has increased from over 10 million tonnes in 2013 to over 22 million tonnes in 2018.

China Releases Strict Aluminium Scrap Import Quotas For Q3

Chinese government has issued the first round of aluminium scrap import quotas recently. The quotas, which are set to go into effect on July 1, will see a drop in aluminium scrap shipped into Chinese ports of almost 85%. As of July 1, aluminium scrap imported will be restricted to a total of 54,256 tonnes for the third quarter. Though experts say the overall impact of quotas is not completely predictable at present as the total number of import quotas for the quarter has yet to be released, the restrictions are significant.

In the third quarter last year Chinese importers received 349,510 tonnes of scrap aluminium. The quotas to be implemented for the coming quarter will operate an average aluminium smelter for less than two months according to projections.

China Taiyuan Coal Transaction Price Index Down 0.04%

Xinhua reported that China Taiyuan coal transaction price index stood at 139.74 points, down 0.04 percent WOW amid relatively weak market demands. The index, released by China Taiyuan Coal Transaction Center based in Shanxi, a coal-rich province, reflects the coal price levels and changes in the main production areas of China.

Analysts said coal prices fell slightly due to the recent increase in hydropower power generation, which led to the relatively low coal consumption at thermal power plants.

China's Tops Out Hualong One Nuclear Plant In Pakistan

Global Construction Review reported that right on schedule, China National Nuclear Corporation this week successfully lifted the large outer containment dome into place at Karachi Unit 2 in Pakistan. It is the overseas debut of China’s homegrown third-generation HPR1000 reactor design, known as the Hualong One, which is currently being assessed for the new Bradwell B nuclear power station in Essex, UK.

In Karachi, ground broke in November 2012, and China lent USD 6.5 billion to Pakistan to help fund the USD 9.6 billion project.

State-owned CNNC said the milestone, achieved 17 June, marks the end of general construction on Karachi Unit 2, and will be followed by containment and heat tests.

The report said that the project is scheduled for completion next year. The HPR1000, China’s self-developed third-generation nuclear power technology, has a double containment design, with the outer containment providing secondary protection.

GE, PowerChina Set to Build USD 4 Billion Zambia-Zimbabwe Plant

Bloomberg reported that Zimbabwe and Zambia chose General Electric Co and Power Construction Corp. of China to build a USD 4 billion hydropower project straddling their border, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa said. The 2,400-megawatt Batoka Gorge plant has been planned for years by the two southern African nations, both of which are struggling with electricity shortages after a drought curbed hydropower output. General Electric and Power China are in a consortium that was shortlisted in February to build the facility.

Mr Mnangagwa said in an interview in Maputo said that “Zambia and Zimbabwe have agreed on this project. We have all agreed that we give it to GE -- China Power and GE together. It’s critical that we move fast on that front because it’s necessary that as we industrialize that we need electricity.”

While the project will address electricity shortages, it’s on the same river -- the Zambezi -- that has left the downstream Kariba hydropower dam at less than 30% storage capacity and producing less than half its intended electricity. The Zambezi’s water flows in 2019 are near the lowest in half a century, and even worse than during the last severe drought in 2014-15.

USITC Votes To Keep AD Duty On Steel Nail Imports From China

The US International Trade Commission determined that revoking the existing antidumping duty order on imports of steel nails from China would be likely to lead to continuation or recurrence of material injury within a reasonably foreseeable time. As a result of the Commission’s affirmative determination, the existing antidumping duty order on imports of this product from China will remain in place.

Chairman David S Johanson and Commissioners Irving A. Williamson, Meredith M Broadbent, Rhonda K. Schmidtlein, and Jason E. Kearns voted in the affirmative.

The action comes under the five-year (sunset) review process required by the Uruguay Round Agreements Act.

China's Australian Coking Coal Imports Halve In May From April - GAC

Reuters, citing General Administration of Customs, reported that China’s imports of Australian coking coal in May plunged 49.3% from a month earlier, as buyers held off purchases because of uncertainty regarding government policy on Australian imports. Arrivals of Australian coking coal were at 1.38 million tonnes last month, down from 2.72 million tonnes in April. That compares to 2.09 million tonnes in May 2018. Australian coal imports have been subject to delays because of extended inspections at ports amid trade tensions between China and Australia. The delays do not appear to be easing.

A Beijing-based trader, said that “Market is cooling down after a temporary enthusiasm in April as imported coal was a lot cheaper compared to domestic coking coal. But traders now worry more about uncertain policy in the coming months.”

China’s May Thermal Coal Import Rises 35% On Year As Market Activity Picks Up

General Administration of Customs coal import data showed that China imported 20.68 million metric tonne of thermal coal in May, up by about 19.3% from April and 34.8% from a year ago. China imported 9.89 million metric tonne of lignite in May, up 2.49% MoM, while import of bituminous coal was up 40.31% from 7.69 million metric tonne in April to 10.79 million metric tonne in May. Total coal imports from January to May, including coking coal, was 127.39 million metric tonne, up 5.5% from 120.73 million metric tonne a year ago.

An east China-based trader said that “A few power plants had called for tenders in April and there were more deals that month too, so most of the shipments have probably reached China in May. Some power plants are worried that import policy might be tightened later in the year, so they are procuring the cargoes earlier.”

Market activities during mid-March and April had picked up after a major industry event in China in early April. Several trades were reportedly concluded for Australian high-ash 5,500 kcal/kg NAR grade of coal when it hit a multi-year low of around USD 55 per million tonne FOB Newcastle in mid-March and also amid the prospect of a relaxation of the import curbs on Australian cargoes.

Dat schreef The Wall Street Journal donderdag.

Tesla’s China factory stuns in sunset shoot

Recent images of Tesla’s Gigafactory 3 from local Chinese media have provided what could only be described as the most stunning images yet of the upcoming electric car production facility. Taken on June 24, 2019, the pictures of the site show Gigafactory 3’s complete, increasingly finished factory shell being framed by a clear Shanghai sunset. The visually impressive images were shared online by Chinese media group 100rd.com, which paid a visit to the factory this Monday. Fortunately for the group, the usually cloudy weather in the area cleared up, allowing them to snap a number of photographs showcasing Gigafactory 3 in some literally flattering light.

Based on the recently-captured images, even some sections of Gigafactory 3’s outer wall that were previously left open appear to have been closed off. This makes it incredibly difficult for the Tesla community’s resident drone operators to acquire images of the work being done within the facility’s interior. With all the general assembly building’s walls fully completed, Gigafactory 3’s exterior also looks more complete than ever.

The continued refinement of Gigafactory 3’s factory shell suggests that the facility will continue to get built at a record-setting pace. Recent rumors, for example, have noted that the first few assembly line equipment are already being installed in some sections of the expansive facility, with some machines already being prepared for pre-setting adjustments. If these rumors prove accurate, Elon Musk’s target of producing the Model 3 on-site in Gigafactory 3 by the end of December becomes a very realistic idea.

To help prepare for the start of Gigafactory 3’s vehicle production operations, construction has recently started to build a substation southwest of the general assembly building. This facility, which reportedly costs USD 12 million to construct, will be tasked with providing power to the site. Just like the massive general assembly building, the progress of the power facility’s buildout has been incredibly rapid. Employees from ABB, a company that makes electrical substations, were spotted among Gigafactory 3’s workers recently as well.

Following the completion of the Phase 1 buildout in May, Gigafactory 3 underwent ground hardening in June. These steps are set to be followed by pipeline communication, equipment stationing, equipment commissioning, and of course, trial production runs of the Tesla Model 3. Barring any unexpected delays, Gigafactory 3 could very well start initial electric car production sometime in September.

'Productie nieuwe Apple Mac Pro in China'

Gepubliceerd op 28 jun 2019 om 16:46 | Views: 611

NEW YORK (AFN/RTR/BLOOMBERG) - Technologieconcern Apple gaat de nieuwe Mac Pro-computer in China bouwen.
