Bangladesh moves to boost exports to Iran

The Financial Express reported that amid continuous downtrend of the export volume Bangladesh has moved forward to increase shipment to Iran.

Officials said that Bangladesh mainly exports raw jute and jute goods to the Muslim nation and due to various sanctions export of the items there fell drastically.

Export Promotion Bureau statistics said that in fiscal year 2010-11 Bangladesh's export to Iran was worth USD 97.25 million which, in FY 2011-12, fell to USD 83.32 million, marking a 14.32% decline.

During the July to November period of the current fiscal year goods worth USD 30.19 million were exported to Iran.

Alongside jute and jute goods, Bangladesh's exports to Iran also include oil seeds, pharmaceuticals, kitchenware, plastics, vegetables, textile fibers, paper yarn, woven fabric, electronic equipment and stainless steel blade.

Recently the EPB suggested the Bangladesh embassy in Tehran to take various measures so that export to Iran is boosted.

The Bureau asked the embassy officials to identify potential exportable items from Bangladesh to Iran, market size and market trend, sending samples of products marketed in Iran for adaptation requirements, packaging and presentation requirements and quality requirements.

The embassy officials are also being asked to study the nature of competition in the Iranian market, trend of prices of the items, tax structure, non tariff barriers, distribution channels and market penetration strategy.

Officials said that financial transaction with Iran faces various hurdles because of the sanctions imposed on it by the Western nations that discourage exporters to trade with the Muslim nation.

Statistics added that due to the sanctions the transactions among nine member countries of the Asian Clearing Union mechanism declined sharply.

Currently Iran is holding the chairmanship of ACU where Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Myanmar and the Maldives are members.

Iranian private sector oil deliveries rise 15pct

Mr Hassan Khosrojerdi chairman of the Union of Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters said that Iran’s private sector oil exports have increased 15%, which shows the ineffectiveness of the Western sanctions imposed on the country’s energy sector.

Mr Khosrojerdi said that long term contracts have been signed with foreign customers to that effect.

He said that “At present, the private sector has managed to sign long-term agreements with foreign customers for crude oil exports and oil sale to these customers is currently under way.”

He added that Iran’s private oil exports had exceeded 200,000 barrels per day on average, since June 2012.

At the beginning of 2012, the United States and the European Union imposed new sanctions on Iran’s oil and financial sectors to prevent other countries from purchasing Iranian oil and conducting transactions with the Central Bank of Iran. The sanctions entered into force in early summer 2012.

Large petchem complex comes on stream in western Iran

Tehran Times reported that Iran inaugurated a large petrochemical complex, with a projected annual output of 300,000 tonnes of high density polyethylene, in the western province of Kermanshah on Tuesday.

The report said that the construction of the complex started in 2005. It cost EUR 165 million plus IRR 1.6 trillion to be completed. The complex will create around 1,500 jobs and it is projected to produce about USD 429 million of polyethylene annually.

Mr Abdolhossein Bayat MD of National Petrochemical Company said that Iran plans to boost petrochemical production by 12 million tonne by the end of spring.

In November 2012, Mr Bayat said that about USD 80 billion in investment opportunities have been identified in both the upstream and downstream sectors of the Iranian petrochemical industry, which is taking great steps toward development.

He said that China and countries in Western Europe are the main recipients of Iran’s petrochemical exports, followed by countries in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, the Indian subcontinent, Africa, and Latin America.

Iran is seeking new markets for its petrochemical products. Toward this end, the NPC has been identifying new export targets for the past two years, and boosting exports of polymer products is on the agenda.

He added that Iran exported USD 14 billion worth of petrochemical products to 60 countries during the previous Iranian calendar year.

He further added that USD 10.5 billion of oil revenues will be allocated for the development of the national petrochemical industry.

Iranian electricity exports to increase 47pct by March

It is reported that the Islamic Republic’s electricity exports are set to increase by 47% by the end of the current Iranian calendar year.

Mr Majid Namjou, Iran’s Energy Minister said that the country’s power exports will increase to 10 billion kilowatt hours in the aforementioned period from 6.8 billion kilowatt hours last year.

Mr Namjou said that the amount would be exported to neighboring countries.

Currently, Iran is exchanging electricity with Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iraq, Pakistan, Turkmenistan and Turkey.

He said that the country was planning to export electricity to Syria and Lebanon through Iraq’s power grid. Iran is capable of exporting 1,000 MW of electricity to Iraq, adding that Syria had also requested 500 MW of electricity.

Seeking to become a major regional exporter of electricity, Iran has attracted more than USD 1.1 billion in investments to build three new power plants.

He further added that by the end of the Fifth Economic Development Plan, Iran will boost its electricity generation capacity by 25 GW to reach 73 GW.

Iran ministry rejects oil revenue slump reports

Reuters cited Iran's oil ministry as saying that only it could comment with authority on the country's oil production, rejecting reports of a 45% fall in oil earnings sourced to a parliamentary budget committee.

A committee spokesman said that Oil Minister Mr Rostam Qasemi had told committee members that Iran's oil sales volumes had fallen by 40% and its earnings by 45% in the last nine months, reflecting the impact of sanctions.

An oil ministry spokesman rejected the account, saying only the ministry could make valid comments on the state of the industry.

Mr Alireza Nikzad-Rahbar spokesman said that "Petroleum Ministry has left behind tough consequences of early days of sanctions with cooperation of oil industry's workforce and experts."

The International Energy Agency IEA said that Iranian oil exports fell to 860,000 barrels per day in September 2012 from 2.2 million in late 2011. Both the US and European Union have stepped up efforts to starve Tehran of funds for its disputed nuclear program.

Iranian oil industry officials usually publicly deny there has been any big impact of Western restrictions on oil sales, but some Iranian members of parliament have recognized the impact of sanctions.

Iran faces no problem in oil sales - Mr Nikzad-Rahbar

Mr Alireza Nikzad-Rahbar, the Iranian Oil Ministry spokesman, said that Iran faces no problem selling its oil despite tough US engineered sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

Mr Rahbar said that “We do not have even one crude oil barrel without customer in the Persian Gulf region at present,” adding that there is no Iranian crude oil saved in oil tankers.

The Iranian official said that Iran’s oil export is currently in normal conditions. The country succeeded in managing the oil market despite international restrictions.

Mr Nikzad-Rahbar said that Iran had signed long-term contracts with China on crude oil exports.

In December 2012, China’s state run Zhuhai Zhenrong Corp announced plans to continue crude oil imports from Iran at a steady volume for the next year in defiance of the US led sanctions against Tehran.

Chinese trading officials said that the Beijing based company would keep importing around 230,000 barrel per day of Iranian crude in 2013. China is Iran’s top trade partner.

Iran developed power plant turbines with domestic expert

MNA reported that Iran has developed power plant turbines with domestic experts, joining Germany and Italy, the other two countries who manufacture power plant turbines.

Mr Esmaili manager of Shiraz Hafiz Gas Power Plant said that Fars Province experts had gained the complex technology for the design and production of power plant turbines, the core of the country’s power plants. All the stages of design, installation, operation and production of these power plant turbines were accomplished according to international standards by domestic experts using national potentials.

He said that “Using reverse engineering, domestic experts were able to obtain the complex technology of the devices and added new options to the turbines. Using these turbines, the fuel’s energy content is converted by the torches to thermal energy and then to mechanical energy.”

In addition to meeting domestic need, Iran will export the devices to Syria and Iraq. The device has been designed and installed in Shiraz Hafiz Gas Power Plant. The 972 MW Shiraz Hafiz power plant is the latest power plant in Fars province, only after to the Shiraz-Kazerun-Jahrom combined cycle power plant.
