DEME & Eiffage Awarded Contract for Offshore Wind Farm in France

A consortium including DEME and Eiffage Metal has been awarded a major EPCI contract for 80 foundations at the Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm in France. The scope includes the design, fabrication and installation of the steel foundations. The consortium contract has a total value of more than EUR 500 million. The 480 MW Saint-Nazaire offshore wind farm, owned by EDF Renewables and Enbridge, will be located between 12 km and 20 km off the coast of the Guerande peninsula in western France. Water depths for the installation range between 12 and 25 metres. Design activities already kicked off in order to start the production of the foundations in spring 2020. The first foundations will be installed offshore, in rocky seabed conditions, during spring 2021, with completion being planned in summer 2022.

The wind farm is expected to generate enough electricity to supply 20% of the Loire-Atlantique department‘s power.

Deutsche Bucht Wind Turbines Installed Offshore Germany

Van Oord’s offshore installation vessel Aeolus has installed 31 turbines on monopiles at the Deutsche Bucht offshore wind farm in the German North Sea. As the Balance of Plant contractor, Van Oord was responsible for the design, engineering, procurement, construction, and installation of the foundations, inter array cables, and offshore substation. The Aeolus was deployed for the transport and installation of the wind turbines.

In January, the company installed the last of 31 monopiles. In July, the cable installation vessel Nexus and trencher Dig-It installed and buried more than 40 km (25 mi) of inter array cables.

Installation and cabling of the two mono bucket foundations and their turbines are planned for 4Q.

Owned by Northland Power, the 269-MW Deutsche Bucht offshore wind farm is expected to meet the needs of about 328,000 households per year.

Vestas Receives 60 MW Order in Finland

Vestas has secured an order from the Nordic developer OX2 backed by the UK investor Infracapital for the wind projects Kröpuln and Storbacken in Western Finland that will be realised on a merchant basis without any direct financial support. The projects have a total capacity of 60 MW of V150-4.2 MW turbines delivered in Power Optimised Mode to maximise power production based on the sites’ specific wind conditions. The contract includes supply, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines, as well as a 30-year Active Output Management service agreement and a VestasOnline® Business SCADA solution to lower turbine downtime and optimise the energy output. The order confirms the strong and long-term collaboration between Vestas and OX2, as the two partners have now announced new wind projects together every consecutive year for the past 13 years. Wind turbine delivery is planned to begin in the second quarter of 2021, with commissioning expected in the third quarter of 2021.

EPCG Shareholders Approve Investment in Gvozd wind farm project

Shareholders of state power utility Elektroprivreda Crne Gore have approved an investment into a joint EUR 58 million project with Austria’s Ivicom Holding to build the Gvozd wind farm. Mr Ivan Mrvaljevic head of development and engineering at EPCG said earlier this year that EPCG could launch construction on the Gvozd wind farm in 2020, and that the wind farm was expected to go on stream in 2022, according to earlier reports. In 2018, EPCG signed a memorandum of understanding with Ivicom Holding concerning the project to build the 50 MW Gvozd wind farm, which is planned to produce 140 GWh of electricity annually.

At the time, EPCG said that financing for the wind farm project on the Gvozd-Krnovo location in the municipality of Niksic would be in the form of loans, for the most part drawn from international finance institutions and that feed-in tariffs are not planned for this project.

EPS invites EOI for Construction of 66 MW Kostolac Wind Farm

State power utility Elektroprivreda Srbije has issued an invitation for expressions of interest in international public bidding for the Procurement of Goods, Works and Associated Services for the Renewable Energy Project Kostolac – Wind Park, Serbia, which will be EPS first wind farm. The project includes the construction of a 66 MW wind farm in Kostolac, 90 km east of Belgrade on the Danube River, the invitation reads. The application deadline is October 1, while tendering for the project is expected to take place in Q4/2019, EPS said in the invitation published in local newspapers. The investment will be financed from a KWf loan. EPS and KfW signed a loan agreement worth EUR 80 million in November 2017.

According to the invitation, project development is already under way (the Environmental Impact Assessment Study has been completed, along with the Feasibility Study with the Preliminary Design and Building Permit Design for the Kostolac Wind Farm, and the Conceptual Solution for internal roads), and a building permit has already been obtained for most of the project.

The project is divided into two tenders. Tender 1: Wind turbines, foundations, electrical works including 20 wind turbines with a maximum wind turbine rotor height (hub height) of 117 m; and Tender 2: Civil engineering works including internal roads and connections to access roads. The objective of the project is to increase and diversify energy resources and contribute to the generation of electricity in Serbia without the emission of harmful gases, and hence without adverse environmental impacts. The project will also contribute to sustainable economic development, social development, and environmental and climate protection, according to the invitation.

Burger en overheid storten Duitse windenergiesector in crisis

Geen land in Europa investeerde de afgelopen tien jaar zo zwaar in alternatieve energiebronnen als Duitsland. Maar nadat het overgrote deel van de zonne-energiesector ondanks flinke subsidies vervolgens het loodje legde door hevige concurrentie uit Azië, stokt nu ook de opmars van windturbines.

In de eerste helft van 2019 werden volgens zakenkrant Handelsblatt slechts 35 nieuwe windturbines gebouwd, een daling van 82% ten opzichte van het jaar ervoor en een historisch dieptepunt. Vorig jaar gingen naar schatting 8000 tot 10.000 banen verloren in de sector. In twee jaar tijd is het aantal werknemers in de windenergie gekrompen van 161.000 naar 125.000. Vakbond IG Metall vreest voor erger. ‘We hebben geen tijd meer te verliezen. Het is vijf voor twaalf’, zei directeur Wolfgang Lemb tegen persbureau DPA.

In Berlijn vond donderdag een crisistop van bedrijven en overheden plaats op initiatief van Peter Altmaier, de minister van economische zaken en energie. Er staat veel op het spel. Duitsland was jarenlang koploper op het gebied van windenergie. Gezegd werd dat de sector zichzelf zonder subsidies zou kunnen bedruipen. Maar Duitsland dreigt nu de industriële basis voor de windindustrie te verliezen.

De belangrijkste oorzaken zijn de achterstanden in de goedkeuringen voor de bouw van windturbines en een tsunami van rechtszaken van bezorgde burgers en natuurorganisaties. Een andere oorzaak is dat het Duitse subsidiesysteem is veranderd. De vaste vergoeding per kilowattuur voor een ieder die elektriciteit uit hernieuwbare bronnen aan het net leverde verdwijnt. Voor de eerste windturbineparken loopt deze subsidie komend jaar af.

Bouwers van nieuwe windenergieparken moeten voortaan deelnemen aan een aanbesteding. De bedoeling is dat partijen die de minste subsidies nodig hebben de opdracht wordt gegund. Deze procedures blijken in de praktijk veel tijd te kosten. Het heeft geleid tot achterstanden.

Organisaties uit de windindustrie en de energiewereld presenteerden woensdag een tienpuntenplan om de Duitse windindustrie te redden. Bureaucratie is volgens hen het struikelblok. Ze roepen op tot het wegnemen van vergunningsproblemen en een standaardisering van de natuurbeschermingsregels. Ze roepen de federale regering en deelstaten op een gezamenlijke strategie te ontwikkelen voor de aanwijzing van gebieden voor windturbines. Tot nu toe hanteerden de deelstaten verschillende regels, die de sector bovendien als streng ervaart.

Ondanks de problemen hebben zon en wind de opwekking van groene stroom deze zomer sterk aangejaagd. Bruinkoolcentrales werden uit de markt gedrukt. Hernieuwbare energiebronnen leverden in de zomer al een grotere bijdrage dan de fossiele brandstoffen kolen, olie en gas.

De Duitse regering wil het gebruik van kolen, gas en kernenergie op termijn vervangen door hernieuwbare energiebronnen. De laatste kerncentrale zal als gevolg van deze voorgenomen 'Energiewende' tegen 2022 sluiten. De laatste kolencentrales moeten tegen 2038 dicht.

Het aandeel groene stroom in Duitsland moet in 2030 stijgen tot 65%. Nu is dat 44%, waarvan ongeveer de helft afkomstig is van windenergie, aldus cijfers van energiebedrijvenkoepel BDEW. De vraag is of Duitsland de klimaatdoelen kan halen als de problemen in de windenergie aanhouden.

Zo'n €165 mln aan kabels bij Borssele wacht op windstroom

Met ontzetting volgde Marco Kuijpers afgelopen zomer de waterstand van de Rijn. Hij had met veel dingen rekening gehouden, maar niet met laagwater dat zijn lading zou ophouden.

Kuijpers is verantwoordelijk voor wind op zee bij Tennet, het staatsbedrijf dat eigenaar is van het hoogspanningsnet in Nederland en een groot deel van Duitsland. Zijn lading, dat waren de kabels om een windpark met zo'n 94 turbines aan te sluiten, 22 kilometer uit de Zeeuwse kust.

Alles was klaar: de zeebodem was in kaart gebracht, sleuven gegraven, kabellegschepen gecharterd. Alleen waren er dus geen kabels, want in Keulen konden schepen niet uitvaren (zie kader).

Forse stoot windstroom

'Dat was een vertraging van een paar weken', zegt Kuijpers in een vergaderzaaltje op de begane grond van het Tennet-hoofdkantoor in Arnhem. Windparken op zee zijn enorme infrastructurele werken, miljardenprojecten. Dus is er altijd wel ergens gedoe.

Tennet heeft de aansluiting van het eerste windpark bij de Zeeuwse kust voltooid. De kabels liggen er, het transformatorstation torent uit boven de golven en op land zijn de kabels aangesloten op het hoogspanningsnet. Het Deense Ørsted moet de windturbines bouwen. Als die er staan, en het ook nog waait, krijgt Nederland over enkele jaren een forse stoot windstroom op het elektriciteitsnet.

Bij Tennet zeggen ze dat de energietransitie nu écht begint. Tot 2023 moeten er nog vier van dit soort windparken worden aangesloten. En daarna worden de windparken alleen maar groter.

Morfologisch

De aanleg op zee gaat soms wel twee keer zo snel als op land, want er zijn geen omwonenden die procederen tot de Raad van State. Maar volgens Kuijpers is het werk minstens zo ingewikkeld. De kabels voor windpark Borssele liggen in de Westerschelde. ‘Morfologisch, dus hoe de bodem qua vorm in elkaar zit, is het daar zeer complex. Zandduinen, kuilen en flinke stroming. We hebben soms tot 6 meter diep moeten baggeren. Je wilt ook niet dat kabels bloot komen te liggen.’

En er waren nog bommen uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Kuijpers vergelijkt het met asbest. ‘Alleen het vermoeden is al genoeg reden voor alarm. Het geologisch onderzoek kostte tientallen miljoenen euro's. Het is gewoon veel werk.’

Negen hectare

Ook ruimtegebrek op land speelt een rol. Een windpark is eigenlijk een enorme elektriciteitscentrale, zegt Kuijpers. ‘Op land moeten die worden aangesloten op een hoogspanningsstation. Zo’n station is algauw 9 hectare groot. Dat is lastig in het dichtbevolkte westen.’

Vooraf maakt Tennet een milieueffectrapportage. Minder graven in zee betekent minder bodemverstoringen, dus dat is weer beter voor het milieu, zegt Kuijpers. Er is een voorkeur voor korte routes: de aansluitingen op het land zo dicht mogelijk bij het windpark op zee. Dat lukt niet altijd, aangezien er niet overal hoogspanningsstations zijn, laat staan dat die ook nog kunnen uitbreiden.

Subsidie

Zo komen de kabels voor windpark Hollandse Kust Zuid, voor de kust van Noordwijk, straks aan land op de Tweede Maasvlakte. Dichterbij bleek onmogelijk.

De laatste twee veilingen voor windparken gingen al zonder subsidie. Scherpslijpers wijzen erop dat er impliciet nog wel degelijk subsidie is, omdat Tennet de kabels aanlegt. Bij de eerste windparken die verrezen voor de Nederlandse kust, werden de kabels betaald door de energiemaatschappijen die de parken bouwden. Nu doet Tennet dat: een staatsbedrijf en dus subsidie.

Factor zes

Tennet roept al jaren dat het belangrijk is om de kosten behapbaar te houden. Dat klinkt tegenstrijdig. De kosten voor wind op zee stijgen jaar na jaar. Het komende decennium wil het bedrijf in Nederland en Duitsland €14 mrd investeren in offshore wind.

'Het uitvoeren van werk op zee is een factor 6 zo duur als onshore en er zijn partijen die rekenen met een factor 8', zegt Kuijpers. 'Ik heb persoonlijk aan minister Kamp beloofd, en heb hem in zijn ogen gekeken, dat we de kosten omlaag zouden krijgen.' Kamp was tot 2017 minister van Economische Zaken.

Steeds sneller

Het argument van Tennet is dat juist doordat het de kabels op zee aanlegt, er een pijplijn aan projecten ontstaat. Dus is er continuïteit en dat drukt de kosten, zegt Kuijpers. 'Bedrijven kunnen er met hun investeringen rekening mee houden. Het gaat om grote bedragen.' Aanleg van een windpark kost een energiebedrijf meer dan €1 mrd.

Tennet heeft vierhonderd mensen die werken aan wind op zee. 'Dat moet ook wel, want anders zijn we te laat', zegt Kuijpers. Het spookbeeld is dat aansluitingen niet tijdig zijn gelegd. 'De bouw van windparken gaat steeds sneller.'

Windturbinevervoer is de Champions League van het transport

Rotondes moeten wijken, wegen verlegd of aangepast. Het internationale vervoer van de steeds groter wordende windturbines is maatwerk op de openbare weg. Transportbedrijf Ter Linden uit Doetinchem doet niet anders. Nu Europa vol inzet op windenergie is er werk te over.

Eigenlijk ziet Nico Koster in de transportlijsten nooit meer wieken voorbij komen kleiner dan 55 meter. 55 meter: inclusief de cabine van de vrachtwagen - de 'trekker', in truckersjargon - dan kom je op een transport van zo'n zestig meter. Dat is ruim drie keer de lengte van een harmonicabus.

Koster (50) is directeur van Ter Linden, een bedrijf uit Doetinchem dat zich helemaal toelegt op het vervoer van windturbines. Dat begon in de jaren negentig: Ter Linden was toen een transport- en bergingsbedrijf. Als ergens in Europa een vrachtwagen in de sloot was beland, werd er gebeld naar Doetinchem en kwam Ter Linden met een gele bergingswagen.

Een kwarteeuw terug kreeg het bedrijf voor het eerst het verzoek om een onderdeel van een windturbine te vervoeren. Onderdelen voor een turbine van veertig meter. Wieken waren zo'n twintig meter lang. Reusachtig, in die tijd. Bij Ter Linden dachten ze: groter dan veertig meter wordt het nooit. Toen kwamen er wieken van 45 meter.

Nu is Koster ervan overtuigd: over tien jaar vervoeren we wieken van 85 meter.

Convoi Exceptionnel

Zijn werk is de laatste jaren ingewikkelder geworden. Koster spreekt met fabrikanten van windturbines en stippelt de routes uit. Altijd 'Convoi Exceptionnel', zoals dat ook op de trucks staat. Met de al maar grotere turbineonderdelen, en daarmee ook het steeds zwaardere transport, is het een voortdurend gevecht om de juiste routes te vinden.

Op dit moment werkt het bedrijf aan een park in het midden van Frankrijk. Dicht bij Dijon komen zestien turbines te staan, met wieken van 65 meter. Van de haven van Antwerpen naar Dijon is het zo'n zeshonderd kilometer. Volgens de ANWB-routeplanner is dat met een personenwagen in zes uur te rijden. Laat het met een vrachtwagen, ruim gerekend, het dubbele zijn: twaalf uur.

Een truck met wieken die gemaakt zijn in China en per schip naar Antwerpen zijn verscheept, doet er snel vier dagen over. Het transport mag alleen 's nachts. Rotondes moeten wijken, lantaarnpalen, soms een muurtje of tuinhek. Wegen worden verlegd of aangepast. Een enkele keer moeten bomen worden gekapt.

Zigzaggen

Vier nachten rijden: het duurt al anderhalve nacht voordat het transport uit België is. Vervolgens is het zigzaggen. Welke bocht kan nog worden gemaakt? Welk viaduct is uitgesloten, waar kan het wel? Maatwerk op de openbare weg.

De nacelles - zeg maar de dynamo bovenop de mast waar de wieken aan worden bevestigd - gaan via Duitsland. Want op de route in Frankrijk is een brug waar het transport niet over mag. Te zwaar.

Europa is één, maar Koster merkt: elk land is anders. Regels, bureaucratie, vergunningen: er gaan soms maanden overheen voordat hij van de bevoegde autoriteiten toestemming krijgt om een transport te mogen uitvoeren.

Zijn vuistregel: als de kostprijs van het kale transport - manuren, diesel - 100 zou zijn, dan is de uiteindelijke prijs van een project 200. Er zijn kosten voor begeleiding, vergunningen, wegaanpassingen, in sommige gevallen kosten voor de politie. Dit is, in de woorden van Koster, 'de Champions League van het transport'.

Werk te over

En zoals er duizenden jongetjes zijn die ervan dromen om bij Barcelona te voetballen, zo zijn er ook voldoende chauffeurs die windmolentransporten willen rijden. Alleen, om de voetbal-analogie door te trekken, niet iedereen is geschikt.

Voor het rijden van 70 meter lang transport bestaat geen opleiding. De cabine, dat is het klaslokaal. Een paar jaar geleden kreeg Koster een telefoontje uit het oosten van Duitsland. Een nieuwe chauffeur, iemand die al op gewone vrachtwagens had gereden en daarna bij Ter Linden aan de slag was gegaan. Lang transport, nee, dat zou geen probleem zijn. Hij was toch een ervaren chauffeur? Maar toen hij in Dresden wieken van 65 meter moest ophalen, kreeg de man het benauwd. Hij durfde niet.

Uit ervaring weet Koster dat het gemiddeld drie tot vier jaar kost voor chauffeurs echt volledig rijklaar zijn. Goede mensen vinden is een van de twee grootste hobbels, zegt de directeur. Het bedrijf heeft 25 chauffeurs. Dat zou het dubbele kunnen zijn. Overal worden windparken gebouwd. Voor de hele industrie geldt: er is werk te over.

Dan zouden er meer wagens moeten komen. Op maat gemaakte zogeheten semi-trailers. Uitschuifbare opleggers. Met tien, twaalf of veertien wielen, soms met een ‘dollie’ erbij: een soort kar die er nog weer achter kan rijden. Dat moet allemaal sterk genoeg zijn om windmolenonderdelen tot 150 ton te vervoeren, het maximumgewicht dat de weg op mag. Die nieuwe wagens zou Ter Linden nog wel kunnen bestellen. Maar waar krijgt het bedrijf zomaar 25 chauffeurs vandaan?

Langere wieken

Een tweede probleem worden, op termijn, de wieken. Bij de windturbines die nu op land worden neergezet, hebben wieken van 65 meter. Maar wat als ze nog weer twintig meter langer worden? In elk geval maakt dat de legpuzzel op de wegen nog weer lastiger.

Wieken bestaan nu doorgaans uit één stuk. Grotere wieken zouden in principe ook uit meerdere stukken kunnen bestaan. Die kunnen op locatie in elkaar worden gezet, zoals ook met de masten gebeurt.

Alleen maakt dat de wieken waarschijnlijk zwaarder, zegt Koster. Het gewicht heeft invloed op het hele bouwwerk. Meer materiaal betekent ook hogere kosten. Daarnaast is zo'n wiek kwetsbaarder, als die bestaat uit twee delen.

Windturbines zijn het één na zwaarste type wegtransport, vermoedt Koster. Heel af en toe is er nog zwaarder transport. Een brug, of een transformatorstation. Maar dat zijn uitzonderingen, eenmalige leveringen. Bij de bouw van de windpark wordt er af en aan gereden. Altijd maar door, overal in Europa. In de woorden van Koster: 'Wij doen zwaar en lang transport met de frequentie van DHL.'

Nordex Group Scores With N133 Order For Subsidy Free Project in Scotland

Nordex Group has won an order for the installation of ten N133/4.8 turbines at the "Crossdykes" project in Scotland, which is located 13 kilometres to the north east of Lockerbie, for its new customer, Muirhall Energy. This is the first order for the Nordex Group for the strong wind variant in the Delta4000 generation presented in spring 2018. Construction work is due to start in 2019. Nordex will provide maintenance and service for the wind farm for a period of 20 years. With the high installed capacity of the turbines of 4.8 MW, their hub height of 110 metres and a good wind profile, Muirhall Energy is to operate the wind farm without government funding. After its completion in 2020 "Crossdykes" will be able to supply 45,000 households with clean electricity.

Mr Patxi Landa, CSO of the Nordex Group said that "The wind farm will be operated without financial support from the government. This shows that the production of electricity from wind power using the latest technology at very good sites can compete with conventional sources of energy.”

Mr Chris Walker MD of Muirhall Energy, said that “We are delighted to be starting construction on what will be one of the first subsidy-free developments to come online in the UK. That is testament to the work we have done as a company, but also the flexibility shown by all of our partners, such as the Nordex Group, as we finalised our plans for the project.”

Vestas Debuts EnVentus platform on German Wind Market

Vestas has received an 11 MW order from long-term customer NOTUS energy Plan GmbH & Co. KG for two V150-5.6 MW turbines and a 25-year service contract for the Beesenberg II wind project in Brandenburg, Eastern Germany. The turbines will be integrated to the already installed wind power plant Beesenberg and Lübbenow, where the first German V150-4.2 MW turbines, ordered in 2018, are currently under construction. This is the first order for the EnVentus platform in Germany and the project will feature the first V150-5.6 MW turbines worldwide.

Ensuring a stronger business case for the customer, the EnVentus turbines for the project will come with a 25-year certified life time that enables the turbines to operate without a new technical qualification after the current standard of 20 years. The order comprises supply, installation, and commissioning of the turbines as well as a 25 year Active Output Management service agreement and a VestasOnline® Business SCADA solution. Wind turbine delivery and commissioning is planned to begin in the fourth quarter of 2020.

VSB and Nordex Group Commission 4.5 MW Wind Turbine

Project developer, VSB and turbine manufacturer the Nordex Group commissioned the 238.5 metre high N149/4.0-4.5 turbine in Pustleben, Thuringia, Germany. Due to its dimensions, the system is very profitable and sets standards in terms of cost-effectiveness, even at locations with medium wind speeds. The electricity generation costs of the plant are lower than those of lignite-fired power plants. About 10 km south of the Harz, it proudly rises into the sky: the Nordex N149/4.0-4.5, with a total height of 238.5 metres, and rotor diameter of 149 metres. When planning the wind turbine, Katja Felkl, Project Developer at VSB Neue Energien Deutschland GmbH, brought all the threads together.

Ronny Kunath, Head of Realisation at VSB, said that "With the support of the community, we have found an optimal solution for citizens and locations. Roads and cable routes have also been planned in such a way that is optimal for local farmers. In addition, the N149/4.0-4.5 is not only one of the most modern and efficient onshore systems, the rotor blades also rotate on average only half as fast as those of smaller wind turbines. This contributes to a harmonious landscape and assists acceptance among the local residents."

Thanks to its height, the modern turbine can use higher-yielding air layers and optimally exploit the full potential of the medium wind location that is Pustleben. It has a nominal output of 4.5 MW at a wind speed of 11.5 metres per second. The optimal conditions for this turbine at exactly this location generate the highest possible annual energy yield, resulting in lower cost of energy production. As a result, the average electricity generation costs are falling and are therefore cheaper than those of lignite-fired power plants.

CEZ Romania Wind Giant to Go on Sale

Czech energy company CEZ has launched a divestment process in Romania to sell assets and companies that include the country’s largest wind farm, the 600MW Fantanele-Cogealac. CEZ is considering selling seven companies in Romania, keeping only those engaged in energy services activities and part of trading, as part of its new strategy. Investors can express their interest both for the entire bulk, but also for individual companies.

Societe Generale will be in charge of market testing interest in the transactions.

In addition to Fantanele-Cogealac, the group’s Resita hydroelectric system, consisting of four dam reservoirs and four small hydroelectric power stations, totalling 22MW, will also be sold as part of the companies being divested.

Tweede helihaven voor offshore opent in Eemshaven

Nederland krijgt er een helihaven voor offshore bij, in het Groningse Eemshaven. De heliport is speciaal bedoeld voor personenvervoer van en naar windparken voor de Nederlandse en Duitse kust. De bouwplannen waren niet onomstreden. Den Helder, dat al een grote helihaven heeft, en de provincie Noord-Holland waren niet blij met de komst van een tweede helihaven.

Heliport Eemshaven wordt vrijdag officieel geopend door minister Eric Wiebes van Economische Zaken en Klimaat. De helikopterhaven zal vooral gebruikt worden door bedrijven die onderhoudspersoneel vervoeren naar windparken op de Noordzee. De locatie is vastgesteld in samenspraak met Groningen Seaports en verschillende milieuorganisaties. Helikopters vliegen straks maximaal vijftien keer per dag.

Concurrent voor Den Helder
Den Helder is dé helihaven voor offshore in Nederland en een van de grootste in West-Europa. De komst van de nieuwe faciliteit in Noord-Nederland betekent dat de marktleider er een concurrent bij krijgt. Vanaf Den Helder is het verder vliegen naar de windparken in de Noordzee dan vanaf de nieuwe locatie in Eemshaven. Windpark Gemini bijvoorbeeld ligt 85 kilometer van de Groningse kust.

De provincie Noord-Holland tekende in 2016 formeel bezwaar aan tegen het voorgenomen besluit van de provincie Groningen om een helihaven te realiseren in Eemshaven. De vrees bestond dat er niet genoeg werk is voor twee gespecialiseerde luchthavens. Maar de plannen konden doorgaan.

De directeur van Den Helder Airport, Conny van den Hoff, noemde de plannen voor de nieuwe helihaven destijds 'niet slim'. ‘Omdat je op een klein oppervlakte zit, en de markt gewoon te klein is voor twee volwaardige vliegvelden’, zei zij tegen de NOS. Later volgde berusting in de komst van een concurrent.

Booreilanden
Het helikoptervliegveld in Den Helder wordt deels gebruikt en betaald door de marine. Vanaf de helihaven vliegen veel helikopters naar de booreilanden voor de kust. Maar het werk voor de olie-industrie neemt af, terwijl de vraag naar diensten voor windparken toeneemt.

Heliport Eemshaven mikt naar eigen zeggen op de windparken Gemini, Veja Mate, Merkur Offshore en Deutsche Bucht. De toestellen vervoeren straks acht tot tien medewerkers per keer. Ze vliegen niet over bewoond gebied, maar volgen de vaargeul.

Commerciële exploitatie
De haven wordt commercieel geëxploiteerd door EMS Maritime Offshore, een specialist in schepen voor service en transport van werknemers. Groningen Seaports blijft eigenaar van de aangelegde infrastructuur.

Met de totstandkoming van de heliport hoopt Eemshaven haar positie als basis- en servicehaven voor de offshore windindustrie te versterken. De luchthaven is een initiatief van de bedrijven die de windparken exploiteren. Zij gebruiken zowel schepen als helikopters voor hun service- en onderhoudswerkzaamheden.

GE Renewable Energy to Deliver Cypress Turbines for 175 MW Onshore Wind Farm in Sweden

GE announced that it will supply 33 of its 5.3 MW Cypress wind turbines, its largest onshore wind turbine in the field, for the 175 MW Björkvattnet wind farm in Sweden. GE will also provide a 25-years Full Services Agreement. The project was developed by Vindparken and WindSpace, with support from GE Renewable Energy, and sold to InfraVia Capital Partners, a French infrastructure investor. Located approximately 470km north of Stockholm, the 175 MW wind farm will generate enough renewable energy to power the equivalent of 175,000 homes in Sweden and will play a significant role supporting the country’s target to become fossil fuel-free by 2040. The project is expected to reach commercial operations by the end of 2020.

Announced last year by GE, the Cypress platform is the most powerful onshore wind turbine in operation today. It enables significant Annual Energy Production improvements, increased efficiency in serviceability, improved logistics and siting potential, and ultimately more value for customers. The unique two-piece blade design enables blades to be manufactured at even longer lengths, while improving logistics to drive costs down and offer more siting options, in locations previously inaccessible.

EDF Renewables Acquires 300 MW of Wind Power Projects in Germany

EDF Renewables announced the acquisition of a significant wind farm projects pipeline of around 300 MW under development across Germany from Altus AG, a major player in the German wind energy sector. Altus AG will pursue the local development of these projects closely with EDF Renewables up to the construction of the future windfarms. Located in 10 different federal states, the wind turbines projects are at various stages of the development process. The land lease contracts are secured and environmental studies are on-going. Once fully permitted, the projects will participate to the onshore wind auctions organized by the German Federal Government in order to secure 20-year Power Purchase Agreements. The commissioning of these wind farms is due to happen during the next five years.

The acquisition of these onshore projects is in line with EDF Renewables’ strategy aimed at developing, building, owning and operating renewable energy assets in a long-term perspective in Germany. First European country in terms of installed renewable energy capacity, this country is indeed a major market in which EDF Renewables has the ambition to strengthen its position by 2030 to be ranked among the significant players of the German wind energy market.

Mr Frederic Belloy, Executive Vice President International Operations at EDF Renewables, stated that “We are delighted to partner with Altus to develop this large-scale wind energy pipeline. This deal is a good opportunity for EDF Renewables to strengthen its project development positions in Germany, a country which wants to reach 65% of renewable energy in its electricity consumption by 2030 (vs 27,4% in 2014). World’s Largest Wind Turbine Blade Test Stand Built by Siemens Gamesa

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has begun construction of the world’s largest wind turbine blade test stand in Aalborg, Denmark. The site will be capable of performing full-scale tests on the next generations of SGRE rotor blades and is expected to be fully operational before the end of 2019. This significant R&D investment in extensive testing will represent additional savings for SGRE’s clients in the future. Such high value-adding R&D activities enable the company to significantly reduce the risk of technical issues and simultaneously deliver wind turbines that are innovative and reliable.

The gigantic structure in Aalborg will have more steel rebar reinforcement per square meter than a wind turbine foundation, so that it has the capability to accelerate the test and prove full reliability over the lifetime of the blade in the shortest possible time, while full respecting IEC regulations.

Mr Vicente Garcia Mueoz, Head of Validation Means Management at SGRE said that “The first tests will be on the 94 meter-long blades for the SG 10.0-193 DD offshore wind turbine, which are almost the same length as one soccer field. We are however building the test stand to accommodate the blade sizes that we will see in the future.”

Taaleri SolarWind II Fund Invests in Norway Wind Farm

The Taaleri SolarWind II fund has acquired 100% ownership of the Haram wind farm. The wind farm is located in the county of Møre og Romsdal, in western Norway, around 20 kilometers north of Alesund. Construction works on the Haram wind farm will start shortly, and with 8 Vestas 4.2 MW turbines and an installed capacity of 34 MW, the wind farm’s annual production of electricity will be approximately 112 GWh. The wind farm will produce enough electricity to supply around 7,000 households and will offset the equivalent of 14,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide during each year of operation. The project was developed by Zephyr who will continue as the construction management consultant and as the technical and commercial management provider during the operational phase. Taaleri Energia’s technical team will be responsible for data monitoring and analytics of the wind farm’s production and Vestas will be responsible for maintaining the turbines under a 27 year contract. The wind farm is expected to reach full operations in the first quarter of 2021.

Taaleri Energia’s Managing Director, Mr Kai Rintala said that “We are very satisfied with the second investment from the Taaleri SolarWind II fund. This investment in Norwegian wind is underpinned by the availability of commercial offtake contracts in one of the world’s most liquid power markets. It also demonstrates the value of our developer network and in-house technical expertise, as well as the strength of our deal pipeline and our ability to efficiently deploy the fund’s committed capital.”
