Wind Park Extension Becomes Vestas First Merchant Project In Italy

Vestas has signed an 18 MW contract with VRG Wind 060 for the extension of the Mazara del Vallo wind park in Sicily, Italy. Utilising Vestas’ industry-leading technology and the operation data from the site’s existing wind turbines to boost energy production and mitigate production uncertainties, Vestas and the customer have developed a solution and business case that will be commercially viable without any direct financial support, selling electricity on merchant market terms.

The order includes the supply and installation of six V126-3.45 MW turbines delivered in 3.0 MW Load Optimised Mode, adding to the customer’s 48 MW of Senvion turbines already installed at the site.

Mr Alberto Musso, CEO of VRG Wind 060, said that “Our merchant project, one of the first ones in the Italian wind sector, leverages on the following positive drivers: a wind farm in operation since 2008 mitigates energy production uncertainties, a new financing scheme which foresees such extension and Vestas’ state-of-the-art technology, which will allow us to better harness wind resources with larger rotors and modern wind turbines. We appreciated Vestas’ team for their competences and effort to finalise the agreements in a very short timeframe”.

Both turbine delivery and commissioning are planned for the fourth quarter of 2019.

4GW Walcha Energy Project in NSW Powers Ahead

Global wind energy leader Vestas has acquired the Winterbourne Wind Farm from Walcha Energy. Winterbourne Wind Farm, which has a potential capacity of up to 700MW, is the first stage of the wind component of The Walcha Energy Project. The Vestas investment will accelerate development of the Winterbourne Wind Farm and will help unlock the considerable renewable energy potential of the wider New England region.

Vestas has acquired a majority stake of the Winterbourne Wind Farm and will lead the development of the project, which is located to the north east of Walcha. A small percentage of the project is owned by community stakeholders. Walcha Energy will assist Vestas with land, community engagement and grid strategy. Vestas' development of the Winterbourne Wind Farm continues to demonstrate its commitment to growing renewable energy in Australia.

GE Facilitates EUR 90 Million Project Financing For Ukrainian Wind Farm

GE Capital’s Global Capital Advisory business, a unit of GE has reached another project milestone for DTEK Renewables BV 200 MW wind farm project, Primorskaya Wind Electric Plant (Primorsk). Financial close on a EUR 90 million project financing package was reached with a German banking consortium and two European export credit agencies for the construction of phase II of a wind farm in the southern region of Zaporizhia, Ukraine.

A banking consortium led by Bayerische Landesbank and comprising two further German banks will provide senior debt for an amount of EUR 90 millionto the project. The deal is supported by German export credit agency, Euler Hermes, which is acting on behalf and for account of the Federal Republic of Germany and will provide an export credit insurance for the senior debt alongside the Spanish ECA, CESCE, which will provide reinsurance to Euler Hermes for approximately one-third of the financing.

Phase II of Primorsk is part of DTEK’s two-phase process to build a 200MW wind farm in Ukraine. Phase I*, also with a capacity of 100MW, has already started operation in the same region of Zaporizhia. To-date, 26 wind turbines for phase I have been commissioned and are already generating electricity. Upon completion of all the works (phase I and II), output of the Primorsk will be 200MW of clean energy supplied to the country’s power grid. In total, Primorsk will be equipped with 52 GE 3.8-130/137-110HH wind turbines, one of the most powerful GE onshore turbines and is expected to generate enough electrical energy to power the equivalent of ~350,000 homes in Ukraine.

Commercial operations of phase II are expected to complete by the end of Q3 2019. Primorsk will assist Ukraine in meeting its target of generating 11 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. It’s estimated that operation of the facility will reduce CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by 700 thousand tonnes per year.

Duke Energy To Use New Technology To Help Protect Bats At Its Wind Sites

Duke Energy Renewables is working with NRG Systems, Inc. to install an innovative bat deterrent system. The technology uses ultrasound to block the sonar that bats use to navigate in the dark, causing them to avoid areas around the wind turbines.

Duke Energy Renewables will install NRG Systems' Bat Deterrent System over a five-year period at 255 wind turbines at its Los Vientos III, IV and V wind sites beginning in July 2019. This will mark the first commercial deployment of the Bat Deterrent System in the continental US.

The Rio Grande Valley, where the Los Vientos wind projects are located, has a robust population of common bat species that provide tremendous pest control benefits to local farmers and ranchers. Maintaining this local bat population was the impetus behind a two-year field study conducted by Duke Energy Renewables, NRG Systems and Texas State University. The study found that the Bat Deterrent System reduced overall bat fatalities by 50% around wind turbine locations at Los Vientos III, IV and V.

Mr Greg Aldrich, lead environmental scientist with Duke Energy said that "At Duke Energy, we're focused on generating clean, renewable energy for customers while also protecting the native wildlife around our generation facilities. With this new technology, we're pleased that we'll be able to significantly reduce the impacts on bats and continue our environmental leadership in this area."

Mr Brogan Morton, senior product manager at NRG Systems said that "We are endlessly grateful to the entire Duke Energy team for the crucial role they played in bringing this technology to market. ERG Acquires 224 MW Pipeline in Germany

ERG, through its subsidiary ERG Power Generation SpA, finalised with Windwärts Energie GmbH the acquisition of a pipeline of wind power projects in Germany with a total capacity of 224 MW. The experienced project development company Windwärts is a pioneer in the German renewable energy sector and a 100% subsidiary of the MVV Energie AG. The early-medium stage pipeline with a total capacity of about 224 MW is composed of 13 projects at various stages of development, 4 of which at a more advanced stage, are covered by the Regional Plans.

The projects are located in the north of Germany, namely in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, in particularly windy areas and have an estimated average production of over 3,000 equivalent hours.

The total price agreed in terms of Enterprise Value is approximately up to 4 million Euro, split between upfront payment and deferred success fees linked to the further development of the projects.

This operation, which follows the entry into operation of the Linda wind farm is a further step in the ERG's path of organic growth and consolidation in the main European wind market, the third largest in the world, as an industrial operator active not only in asset operation, but also in development and construction.

Vestas Receives 58 MW Repowering Order With Auction Win In Denmark

Vestas has received a 58 MW repowering order for the first phase of the 94 MW Overgaard 1 wind park in Randers Municipality in Denmark. The order is placed by SE Blue Renewables, a joint venture between the Danish energy company SE* and Denmark’s largest pension company, PFA Pension. The firm order includes supply, installation and commissioning of 16 V126-3.45 MW turbines delivered in 3.6 MW Power Optimised Mode as well as a 20-year Active Output Management 5000 (AOM 5000) service agreement.

Highlighting Vestas’ auction capabilities as well as Denmark’s large repowering potential, the order is Vestas’ second announced repowering project derived from Denmark’s first energy-neutral auction. Once completed, Overgaard phase 1 will consist of 26 new turbines, which will almost quadruple the current site’s energy production, demonstrating the strong business case in replacing older turbines with newer and more efficient variants.

Mr Jan Bach Jensen, CEO, SE Blue Renewables said that ”When fully completed, Overgaard 1 will be the largest onshore wind project in Denmark, and taking the first step now is a great milestone for SE Blue Renewables. Nordex Group Inks Contract for 58 MW In Croatia

The Nordex Group is further enlarging its footprint in Croatia. The state-owned energy supplier Hrvatska elektroprivreda has now placed an order with the manufacturer for the supply of 18 N131/3600 turbines for the Korlat wind farm. The Nordex Group is also responsible for service and maintenance of the turbines for a period of 20 years on the basis of a Premium Service Agreement. For the HEP Group this is the first wind farm in its power plant portfolio.

Mr Patxi Landa, CSO of the Nordex Group said that "We are pleased that the HEP Group has now added wind turbine generators to its existing power plant portfolio for the first time and that they have opted for our turbine technology. By building Korlat, we are supporting the HEP Group on its way to a CO2-free, climate-neutral electricity production.”

"Korlat" is to be set up some 40 kilometres from the port of Zadar, near to Benkovac, a town in the interior of the country. The wind farm has an altitude of between 270 and 340 metres above sea level. The wind speed at the site is a moderate 7.2 metres per second, ideal conditions for the N131/3600, which is specifically designed for moderate and very low wind speeds. Start of the delivery of the turbines is end of 2019. The plant is scheduled to go into operation in mid of 2020.
Mr Frane Barbaric, the President of the Management Board of HEP dd said that “WPP Korlat will be the first wind power plant in our generation portfolio, but also the first power plant in Croatia to generate electricity without incentives. In preparation are other wind power plant projects, which are developed as part of renewable development scenario.”

The wind farm Korlat expected production is around 170 GWh, which is around 1.5% of Croatian electricity consumption.

Enerho to Build 50 MW Wind Farm In Ukraine

Lviv-based Yavoriv Enerho 2 LLC will construct a wind farm with a capacity of 50 MW in Yavorivsky district, Lviv region. The project envisages the installation of 25 wind turbines with a capacity of 3.5 MW to 5 MW each at a distance of 400 to 800 meters from each other. The wind turbines will be 100 to 166 meters high. The total area of the wind farm will be 1 hectare. It will annually generate around 180,000 MW per hour.

In addition, Wind Power GSI Volyn, the owner of Yavoriv Enerho 2 LLC, plans to construct a high-voltage substation 100 kW on the area of 2 hectares and a TRDN split-winding transformer for receiving and sending generated power to the power grid.

It is also planned to modernize high-voltage equipment at the Lviv Zakhidna substation 330 kW (1-2 units 35 kW-110 kW).

Ørsted And Vattenfall Link Up Offshore Wind Farms in North Sea

The owners of the two offshore wind farms, Ørsted and Vattenfall, invested in the 33 kV cable that creates additional security for the two energy companies’ billion-kroner investments in the North Sea. If there is a problem with the export connection to land, this is not only critical for the supply of electricity to customers on the mainland; it is also critical for the wind turbines.

Mr Niels Møller Jensen, Interface Manager at Horns Rev 3 said that “Offshore wind turbines must always be supplied with electricity; otherwise there is a risk of significant damage from for instance humidity. The cable also enables a quick and easy start-up of the offshore wind farm once the export connection is back in service. In addition, we save a lot of diesel fuel and operating hours for the emergency generators for both the wind turbines and the service boats.”

The cable, which was completed in April, is an optimal solution both in terms of the environment and with regard to investments and operating costs. It was used for the first time recently when Energinet had to disconnect the export cable from Horns Rev 2 for four days for maintenance works. During this time, the wind farm was supplied with electricity from Horns Rev 3.

Mr Allan Due Overbeck, Head of Operations Horns Rev 2 said that “We are really happy that we could supply our 91 wind turbines with back-up electricity from Horns Rev 3 during Energinet’s planned inspection of the export cable’s high voltage switch. Thanks to the new cable, we were able to resume generation of renewable power much faster.”

The wind turbines at Horns Rev 2 normally get emergency power from a central generator on an offshore platform. At Horns Rev 3, each turbine has a small emergency generator.

This is the first time the two offshore wind farms, which have different owners, have backed each other up in this way. Horns Rev 2 has been in operation since 2009, while Horns Rev 3 first began supplying power to the electricity grid in December and will be operating at full capacity by the end of the summer.

Glennmont Acquires Stake In The Gode Wind 1 Offshore Wind Farm In Germany

Glennmont Partners has entered into an agreement to acquire a 25% stake in the Gode Wind 1 Offshore Wind Farm in Germany from current 50% owner Global Infrastructure Partners II a fund managed by Global Infrastructure Partners. The acquisition is the first offshore wind investment to be realised from Glennmont’s EUR 850 million Clean Energy Fund III, which achieved its final close in June.

Gode Wind 1 is a 330MW operating offshore wind farm in the German North Sea, currently being held in a 50/50 joint-venture between GIP II and Ørsted, a Denmark listed global offshore wind leader. In addition to Ørsted’s 50% ownership in the wind farm, it provides operations and maintenance services and a route to market for the power production.
The transaction is subject to approval by the competition authorities and is expected to be completed in Q3 2019.

The announcement follows The Renewables Infrastructure Group Limited a London-listed investment company advised by InfraRed Capital Partners, announcing earlier this month that it has agreed to acquire GIP’s remaining 25% stake in the Project. Following Glennmont’s acquisition the wind farm will be held by Ørsted (50%), TRIG (25%, subject to completion), and Glennmont (25%).

Mr Joost Bergsma, CEO and Managing Partner of Glennmont Partners, said that “We are delighted to announce this important transaction as Glennmont’s first investment in the German offshore wind market and to be partnering with Ørsted, a recognized leader in the sector. Gode Wind 1 represents a high-quality offshore wind asset supported by a demonstrable track record of cash flow generation to deliver value for our investors.”

Eurus Energy Marks 1GW Milestone in Europe

The wind power station Windpark Spui (output 21 MW), which Eurus Group has been constructing in the Netherlands, has reached completion and commercial operations have begun. This wind power station consists of five Enercon-made wind turbines installed in agricultural land. Each turbine outputs 4.2 MW, allowing the power station to supply electricity equivalent to the consumption of around 24,000 average-sized households.

With the completion of Windpark Spui, the total output of all wind power facilities owned by Eurus Group in Europe has now passed the 1GW mark at 1,019.97MW.

Since Eurus Group first put into operation a wind power station in England in 1993, over the course of a quarter of a century they have grown their wind power business in Europe and currently own stations in six countries within the continent (England, Italy, Spain, Norway, Finland and the Netherlands).

In Europe, positive efforts are continuing towards the expansion of renewable energy, as seen in the EU’s goal of raising the renewable energy target to at least 32% by 2030. Against this backdrop, Eurus Group will continue to expand their European business in order to contribute further to the spreading of renewable energy in Europe.

Elawan Energy Sets Up Its Sixth Wind Farm in Beligum

Elawan Energy has set in commercial operation Hannut wind farm, in Wallonia, Belgium. It has 22 MWs and Nordex/Acciona technology. This new wind farm becomes the sixth one to be constructed by Elawan Energy in Belgium. Out of them, three have been sold and Feluy, Beaumont and Hannut wind farms are part of Elawan’s operational assets in Europe. In this very same region of Wallonia, Elawan Energy is currently enlarging Beaumont wind farm and a construction a new wind farm called Salazine. Both together add up to 12 MWs that will come into operation by the end of 2020.

Projects currently under construction (128 wind MWs in South Africa, Turkey and Brazil, and 36 photovoltaic MWs in Spain) along with 250 photovoltaic MWs and 150 wind MWs that will be initiated in Spain during the coming months, will allow the company to reach 1,282 MWs if installed renewable power by late 2020, out of which 286 will be photovoltaic, 14 mini-hydraulic and the remaining ones related to wind power.

OX2 Purchases Major Wind Power Project from LahiTuuli

OX2, a leading Nordic developer within onshore wind power, has signed a purchase agreement with LähiTuuli for one of the largest wind power projects in Finland. The project rights acquired via the wind power project will allow OX2 to build a wind farm of 24 wind turbines in North Ostrobothnia, Finland. The total capacity of the Metsälamminkangas project will be approximately 150 MW. Annual production will be equivalent to the electricity consumption of around 80,000 homes (5,000 kWh per household). The project will be based in Vaala, around 120 km southeast of Oulu.

The project has planning permission as part of the area’s general plan, allowing 24 wind turbines to be built. The highest wind turbine will be approximately 230 m, and the land on which the turbines will be built is privately owned.

The Metsälamminkangas wind farm will be connected to the national grid, Fingrid, via the Vuolijoki substation through an expansion of 32 km of the existing 110 kV section of the grid.

Mr Teemu Loikkanen, Regional Manager, Finland and the Baltics, at OX2 said that “Metsalamminkangas is one of the largest wind power projects in Finland. It will strengthen our position as a leading wind power player in the Nordic countries.” He continues that “We’ve already begun tenders with suppliers and started negotiations on a power purchase agreement and funding. Our aim is to be able to start construction next spring, meaning the turbines could be installed in summer 2021.”

LähiTuuli Oy, the developer of the project, is pleased with its contract with OX2. Miika Pilli, CEO of LähiTuuli Oy, said that “Metsälamminkangas has been an extremely important project for us right from the start, and it’s great to see it now moving to the next phase. We think it’s important that our farm continues to develop all the way to electricity generation, and this has been a crucial consideration for us when choosing a new owner.”

Futuren Commissions Two Wind Farms in France

In the first half of 2019, FUTUREN commissioned two wind farms with a combined capacity of 20.1 MW and started construction works for a new 15.4 MW wind farm.The Faydunes wind farm, located on the territory of the municipality of Saint-Affrique, in the Aveyron French department, comprises 6 wind turbines with a nominal capacity of 2.3 MW, for a total capacity of 13.8 MW. Commissioned in April 2019, this wind farm now generates renewable electricity, that will cover the yearly electricity needs of more than 11,000 households.

The Joncels wind farm, located on the territory of the town of the same name, in the Hérault French department, includes 7 wind turbines, for a total capacity of 6.3 MW. Commissioned in June 2019, it produces enough renewable electricity to meet the yearly electricity needs of nearly 6,000 households.

The commissioning of these two wind farms bring to 448 MW the gross installed capacity operated by FUTUREN for its own account, of which 220 MW are located in France.

The Mottenberg wind project, located in the municipalities of Zimming and Narbéfontaine, in the Moselle French department, obtained all the necessary authorizations for its construction and operation. The project, currently under construction, will include 7 wind turbines with a nominal capacity of 2.2 MW, for a total capacity of 15.4 MW. As from its commissioning, this future wind farm will produce renewable electricity that will cover the yearly electricity needs of nearly 15,000 households.

'Bouw van windparken op zee moet veel sneller'

Het tempo van de bouw van windparken in de Noordzee moet fors omhoog. Overheden moeten snel nieuwe gebieden aanwijzen voor de bouw van windparken na 2030.

Dat stelt een consortium van Nederlandse en Deense netbeheerders, de haven Rotterdam en Gasunie.

Bij het huidige tempo worden de doelen van het Klimaatakkoord van Parijs volgens de partijen niet gehaald. Gebieden die nu nog verboden terrein zijn, zoals militaire zones en natuurgebieden, moeten worden opengesteld.

Het consortium, North Sea Wind Power Hub, heeft dinsdag een reeks haalbaarheidsstudies gepubliceerd. Volgens de betrokken partijen wijzen alle scenario’s uit dat een grote toename van offshore windenergie nodig is in de komende decennia. Eind vorig jaar stond er 13 gigawatt aan windvermogen opgesteld in de Noordzee. In 2018 kwam er 2 gigawatt bij.

‘Een voortzetting van dat tempo is duidelijk niet genoeg om de doelstellingen van het Parijs-akkoord te halen. Daarom is een grote sprong nodig in de ontwikkeling van offshore wind. Om een geïnstalleerd vermogen van 70 gigawatt – 150 gigawatt in de Noordzee in 2040 te bereiken, is een gemiddelde uitrol van 7 gigawatt per jaar nodig in de periode 2023-2040’, aldus het rapport.

Knooppunten

De partijen hebben plannen ontwikkeld om in de Noordzee een aantal knooppunten te bouwen waar grote windparken via grote converters (grote stopcontacten op zee, red.) op internationale stroomverbindingen worden aangesloten. Op termijn kunnen daar mogelijk ook waterstoffabrieken worden gebouwd.

Waar in eerste instantie werd gedacht aan één groot eiland, wordt nu gekeken naar een aantal kleinere knooppunten verspreid over de Noordzee. Die knooppunten kunnen een kunstmatig eiland zijn, een grote drijvende constructie of een platform.

Om zo’n visie kosteneffectief te realiseren is echter een veel grotere schaal van windenergie op de Noordzee nodig dan nu is voorzien. Welke investeringen de bouw van de knooppunten en verbindingen vergt, kunnen de partijen nog niet zeggen, omdat het afhankelijk is van een groot aantal keuzes.

Snelle actie nodig

De betrokken partijen roepen overheden op snel tot actie over te gaan. ‘Om een eerste knooppunt op de Noordzee operationeel te hebben begin jaren '30 is een formeel besluit nodig in de vroege jaren '20. Dat impliceert dat specifieke nationale duurzame energiedoelstellingen voor de periode na 2030 al in 2020 moeten zijn genomen. Die tijdlijn benadrukt de noodzaak voor snelle actie zodat het project kan worden ontwikkeld en gerealiseerd.’

Internationale samenwerking en coördinatie is daarbij hard nodig, zegt het consortium. Landen rond de Noordzee zijn op dit moment weliswaar bezig met de ruimtelijke planning van windparken, maar opereren los van elkaar. ‘Het is essentieel dat in die processen alle aspecten worden meegenomen op een internationaal niveau, inclusief synergie door het verbinden van infrastructuur', aldus de initiatiefnemers die ook met de Noren en Britten in gesprek zijn over deze visie.

Natuurgebieden

Het consortium heeft verschillende opties onderzocht voor de aanleg van kunstmatige eilanden op verschillende locaties, waaronder in het Natura-2000 gebied Doggersbank. De milieu-impact van de aanleg en bouw van dergelijke knooppunten moet nog worden onderzocht.

De partijen pleiten er voor om te overwegen om ook gebieden die nu nog off limit zijn voor windparken, zoals militaire gebieden, natuurgebieden, visgronden, ook voor windparken, waterstoffabrieken en stroomkabels open te stellen.

‘De gezamenlijk maritieme ruimtelijke gebieden van de landen aan de Noordzee kunnen de voorziene uitbreiding van offshore wind niet accommoderen, vooral door het gebrek aan aangewezen windgebieden na 2030’, aldus het consortium.'

Vestas wins 41 MW order in Germany

Bürgerwindpark Reußenköge GmbH & Co KG has placed an order for 12 V112-3.45 MW turbines for the expansion of a citizen-owned wind park in Schleswig-Holstein. With this order, the wind park will have a total installed capacity of 210 MW with the possibility of a further expansion up to 300 MW in the coming years, making it one of the world’s largest citizen-owned wind projects. The current wind park has an estimated annual production of around 600.000 MWh, which can cover the annual electricity consumption of half a million German citizens.

Mr Dirk Ketelsen, Managing Director Bürgerwindpark Reußenköge GmbH & Co. KG said that “This 12 V 112-3.45 MW turbine expansion is another major step to building out our citizen wind park to provide sustainable energy to the region. We started this journey in 1989 with our first turbine and we plan to expand this citizen wind partk to up to 300 MW in the coming years. With the 12 new turbines, Vestas will have provided 63 V112-turbines for this wind project.”

North Sea Wind Power Hub Consortium Presents Achievable Solution to Meet Climate Goals

The international consortium partners of the North Sea Wind Power Hub presented the results of the project's assessment phase. Over the past months, the consortium has been analysing the possibility and conditions required to build one or several wind power hubs in the North Sea. The consortium has conducted a wide range of studies, investigated a number of different scenarios and conducted intense engagements with policy makers, leading offshore wind farm developers and Non-governmental organisations.

The consortium's aim is to facilitate the large scale roll-out and integration of far North Sea offshore wind against least cost to society while maintaining security of supply, as part of the energy transition to a low-carbon energy system. The vision is based on an internationally coordinated rollout of Hub-and-Spoke projects, combining wind power connection, coupling of energy markets through interconnection and smart integration in the onshore energy grid, including power to gas. This approach has major advantages both economically and in terms of environmental policy.

The consortium's investigations serve answers to meet Paris Agreement climate goals on time and respond to current energy and climate agreements e.g. in The Netherlands and Denmark as well as to German fade out of nuclear power and coal exit.

Summary of key findings
• The proposed Hub-and-Spoke concept is technically feasible
• A gradual roll-out of 10 to 15 gigawatts hubs is the next logical step towards a large offshore wind build-out
• A first Hub-and-Spoke project will likely be electrically connected to shore and with additional power-to-gas to provide energy system flexibility and could be operational in the 2030s
• While it is likely possible to build a first Hub and Spoke project within the current regulatory framework and market design, i.e. current EU and national legislation, significant changes are required in national practices, approaches, planning and policies in order to allow for integrated infrastructure projects such as the modular hub concept being part of the long term energy transition
• According to all international studies and scenarios the large scale roll-out rate of offshore wind is crucial to meet “Paris targets”. Acceleration is needed.
• As the North Sea is hosting a large potential for offshore wind power, the implementation of 180 gigawatts offshore wind can be achieved by 2045 by the consortium’s approach
• An international coordinated approach could connect and integrate large scale offshore wind more effectively and with significant lower costs compared to a continued individual national planning
• Long term market security is needed for all stakeholders to invest and build-up the required supply chains
• Urgent agreements on developing sustainable energy from offshore wind after 2030 are needed
• Consortium has started and facilitates discussion with governments, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), policy makers and industry: Close cooperation and support is needed by setting up consultation processes and international agreements
• Balanced decision making is required by policy makers and spatial planners to weigh the environmental impact of offshore wind farm developments against its techno economic impact, and the urgency to meet the long-term climate goals
• Using power-to-gas conversion and transmission in combination with coupling with other sectors will bring benefits to the overall energy system.

AP Møller Acquires KK Wind Solutions

Danish conglomerate AP Møller has agreed to acquire KK Group, the parent company of control systems specialist KK Wind Solutions. Meanwhile, KK Wind Solutions CEO Chlinton Arendahl Nielsen said its new owners would give the company the "financial strength" to expand globally.

AP Møller, which owns stakes in transportation, logistics, infrastructure, energy and financial services companies, stated the acquisition would help it move into the renewables sector.

KK Wind Solutions supplies turbine control systems to leading manufacturers.

AP Møller added that the "change in ownership not going to impact strategic direction of KK Wind Solutions".

The transaction is subject to approval from relevant competition authorities and is expected to close in Q3 2019.

New GBP 1.5 Million Boost For Uk Offshore Wind Innovators

The jointly funded, three year agreement between Vattenfall and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, the UK’s leading technology innovation and research centre for offshore renewable energy, will give innovators in the offshore wind supply chain the opportunity to test and demonstrate technologies in real-world conditions at Vattenfall’s pioneering GBP 300 million European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre off Aberdeen in Scotland.

The new GBP 1.5 million programme is seeking innovators to bring forward technologies to solve some of the current operations and maintenance challenges facing the industry in areas such as blade repair and leading-edge erosion, robotics and autonomous systems and remote array cable monitoring and inspection. If successful, companies chosen will be able to demonstrate their technologies at the EOWDC, potentially securing a route to market for their innovations.

The programme deepens the collaboration announced between Vattenfall and ORE Catapult in June 2018, to support innovation deployment at the EOWDC.

Mr Danielle Lane, Vattenfall’s UK Country Manager, said that “It’s with innovation proved in the stormy seas off the Aberdeenshire coast that the offshore wind industry will make a crucial contribution to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This GBP 1.5 million programme agreed between Vattenfall and ORE Catapult makes broader thinking real by giving talented innovators from across the UK the chance to test the potential of their creations in the best possible environment - the real world. And innovation is more easily made commercial in a positive policy framework. That’s why the Offshore Wind Sector Deal, agreed between the industry and the UK government, is so important to securing the long-term potential of the innovation we will see tested at the EOWDC.”

Mr Chris Hill, ORE Catapult’s Operational Performance Director, added that “This new GBP 1.5 million programme with Vattenfall and the EOWDC provides a unique opportunity for UK innovators to work with ORE Catapult and Vattenfall to bring new technologies to market through testing in a controlled real-world environment. Accessing real-world opportunities to test, demonstrate and validate their technologies is often a real barrier to commercialisation for small innovators, and therefore this investment should give UK companies a crucial edge in developing technology and services for the new wave of offshore wind developments and help the UK government to meet its target of generating at least a third of the UK’s electricity from offshore wind by 2030.”

GE Renewable Energy to Power Potegowo Wind Farm in Poland

GE Renewable Energy announced that it will provide 81 onshore wind turbines to power the 220 MW Potegowo Wind Project in Slupsk County, Northern Poland. This is the first project between GE Renewable Energy and Potegowo Mashav Sp Z OO. With a current installed base of 580 MW in Poland, GE Renewable Energy will increase its installed base to 800 MW in the country, once the project is commissioned.

81 of GE's 2MW onshore wind turbines will power the wind farm, which is divided in four sub-projects: Biecino, with five units already in the process of being installed; Karzcino and Wrzescie, with 13 units; Gluszynko, with 20 unit; and Malechowo, with 43 units.

All turbines will be manufactured at GE Renewable Energy's site in Salzbergen, Germany. GE will also provide a five-year Full Service Agreement offering data-driven insights, expert recommendations, and advanced field services.

Mr Peter Wells, Onshore Wind CEO for Europe and SSA at GE Renewable Energy said that "we are proud to announce our first project with Potegowo Mashav Sp Z OO and reiterate our commitment to bring sustainable green electrons to the Polish grid. Poland's wind industry is vibrant and will continue to thrive, as the upcoming auctions offer promising opportunities to continue supporting the country's National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) on its path towards decarbonization."

Mr Tomer Eizenberg, CEO of Mashav Energia said that "we are thrilled to have the opportunity to build one of the largest wind farms in Poland, which would not have been possible without our partners at GE Renewable Energy. This is a significant milestone in our wind farm investment program, having won the Polish government tender in November 2018 for the supply of 220 MW of wind generated energy to the Polish electricity network".

The project is backed by the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development and is the first renewables investment in Poland in the past three years. The Potegowo wind farm is expected to help save 480,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
