VS leveren mogelijk ’kamikaze-drones’ aan Oekraïne, mysterieuze munitie Rusland gevonden

WASHINGTON - De Amerikaanse regering overweegt om het door oorlog verscheurde Oekraïne te bevoorraden met geavanceerde Switchblade-drones, ook wel bekend als de ’kamikaze-drone’. Dergelijke killerdrones kunnen Russische tanks op vrij onopvallende wijze vanuit de lucht aanvallen. Maar ook de Russen laten nieuwe militaire wapens niet achterwege, blijkt uit de vondst van munitie in het oorlogsgebied.

Er bestaan twee varianten van de Switchblade-drone: de Switchblade 300 voor aanvallen op militair personeel, en de Switchblade 600 voor aanvallen op gepantserde voertuigen: beide drones zijn slimme robots geladen met explosieven, die zichzelf – zoals een kamikaze – met behulp van camera’s en een geavanceerd sturingssysteem razendsnel op hun doelwit storten, en zichzelf vervolgens tot ontploffing brengen. Het militaire speelgoed is op kilometers afstand bestuurbaar. Washington levert sinds de Russische inval in de Krim in 2014 vooral defensieve wapens aan Oekraïne.

Ze kunnen uiteraard maar één keer gebruikt worden, maar het voordeel is dat ze veel goedkoper zijn dan de Hellfire-raketten die afgevuurd worden door de veel zwaardere Reaper-drones, schrijft Nieuwsblad. Zo zou de Switchblade 300 slechts 6.000 dollar (ongeveer 5.500 euro) kosten. Volgens experts kunnen dergelijke drones zware schade toebrengen aan Russische eenheden in Oekraïne, die er maar niet in zouden slagen om het Oekraïense luchtruim onder volledige controle te krijgen.

Volgens Amerikaanse media overweegt president Biden de drones te sturen, maar is hij vooralsnog terughoudend uit vrees voor verdere escalatie van het conflict tussen Kiev en Moskou. Zo zette hij ook al een streep door de levering van straaljagers aan Oekraïne, ondanks een oproep daartoe van president Volodimir Zelenski.

Ook is niet duidelijk hoeveel Switchblade-drones de Verenigde Staten precies in voorraad heeft, hoe snel producent AeroVironment er nieuwe kan maken en hoeveel training het zou vergen om de Oekraïners te leren de drones daadwerkelijk in te zetten.

’Mysterieuze munitie gevonden’

De New York Times meldt dat het Russische leger niet achterblijft in moderne oorlogsvoering. Poetins leger zou een mysterieuze vorm van munitie in korteafstandsraketten gebruiken die het vanaf de grens richting Oekraïne afvuurt. Het gaat om afleidingsmunitie die uit de afgevuurde Iskander M-korteafstandsraketten komt en ervoor zorgt dat het Oekraïense raketafweersysteem de raketten niet goed opmerkt. Het was in de internationale gemeenschap niet bekend dat Rusland deze afleidingsapparaten bezat of gebruikte.

Russian troops bomb Mariupol theatre with up to 1,200 civilians inside

Russian troops have launched an attack on a theatre in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol where as many as 1,200 civilians including women, children and the elderly, were taking refuge.

Mariupol's city council said Russian forces had "purposefully and cynically" destroyed the Drama Theatre in the heart of Mariupol.

Adding : "The plane dropped a bomb on a building where hundreds of peaceful Mariupol residents were hiding.

"It is still impossible to estimate the scale of this horrific and inhumane act, because the city continues to shell residential areas.

"It is known that after the bombing, the central part of the Drama Theatre was destroyed, and the entrance to the bomb shelter in the building was destroyed."

The number of casualties is still unknown, but Mariupol's deputy mayor Serhiy Orlov, told the BBC that between 1,000 and 1,200 civilians were taking shelter in the theatre.

"It is impossible to find words that could describe the level of cruelty and cynicism with which the Russian occupiers are destroying the civilian population of the Ukrainian city by the sea.

"Women, children, and the elderly remain in the enemy's sights. These are completely unarmed peaceful people," the council said.

This comes hours after Putin's menacing warning that the West's "economic blitzkrieg" against Moscow had failed and that Western countries have "geopolitical aims which don't include a strong independent Russia".

Speaking in a televised meeting from Moscow, the Russian President said that the West was attempting to "cancel" Russia with economic sanctions - but that the measures had failed and Russia wasn’t about to run out of cash for its invasion.

The bloody conflict has entered it's fourth week with the US claiming today, ten Ukrainians were shot and killed by Russian forces while waiting in line for bread in Chernihiv.

The US Embassy in Kyiv said: "Today, Russian forces shot and killed 10 people standing in line for bread in Chernihiv.

"Such horrific attacks must stop. We are considering all available options to ensure accountability for any atrocity crimes in Ukraine."

A Ukrainian Town Deals Russia One of the War’s Most Decisive Routs

In the two-day battle of Voznesensk, local volunteers and the military repelled the invaders, who fled leaving behind armor and dead soldiers

VOZNESENSK, Ukraine—A Kalashnikov rifle slung over his shoulder, Voznesensk’s funeral director, Mykhailo Sokurenko, spent this Tuesday driving through fields and forests, picking up dead Russian soldiers and taking them to a freezer railway car piled with Russian bodies—the casualties of one of the most comprehensive routs President Vladimir Putin’s forces have suffered since he ordered the invasion of Ukraine. A rapid Russian advance into the strategic southern town of 35,000 people, a gateway to a Ukrainian nuclear power station and pathway to attack Odessa from the back, would have showcased the Russian military’s abilities and severed Ukraine’s key communications lines. Instead, the two-day battle of Voznesensk, details of which are only now emerging, turned decisively against the Russians. Judging from the destroyed and abandoned armor, Ukrainian forces, which comprised local volunteers and the professional military, eliminated most of a Russian battalion tactical group on March 2 and 3. The Ukrainian defenders’ performance against a much-better-armed enemy in an overwhelmingly Russian-speaking region was successful in part because of widespread popular support for the Ukrainian cause—one reason the Russian invasion across the country has failed to achieve its principal goals so far. Ukraine on Wednesday said it was launching a counteroffensive on several fronts. “Everyone is united against the common enemy,” said Voznesensk’s 32-year-old mayor, Yevheni Velichko, a former real-estate developer turned wartime commander, who, like other local officials, moves around with a gun. “We are defending our own land. We are at home.”

Moscow hasn’t released updated casualty figures since acknowledging on March 2 the death of 498 troops, before the Voznesensk battle. Russian survivors of the Voznesensk battle left behind nearly 30 of their 43 tanks, infantry fighting vehicles, multiple-rocket launchers and trucks, as well as a downed Mi-24 attack helicopter, according to Ukrainian officials in the city. The helicopter’s remnants and some pieces of burned-out Russian armor were still scattered around Voznesensk on Tuesday. Russian forces retreated more than 40 miles to the southeast, where other Ukrainian units have continued pounding them. Some dispersed in nearby forests, where local officials said 10 soldiers have been captured.

“We didn’t have a single tank against them, just rocket-propelled grenades, Javelin missiles and the help of artillery,” said Vadym Dombrovsky, commander of the Ukrainian special-forces reconnaissance group in the area and a Voznesensk resident. “The Russians didn’t expect us to be so strong. It was a surprise for them. If they had taken Voznesensk, they would have cut off the whole south of Ukraine.” Ukrainian officers estimated that some 100 Russian troops died in Voznesensk, including those whose bodies were taken by retreating Russian troops or burned inside carbonized vehicles. As of Tuesday, 11 dead Russian soldiers were in the railway car turned morgue, with search parties looking for other bodies in nearby forests. Villagers buried some others.

Ukrainian delegation member @Podolyak_M says that the draft peace plan published by the Financial Times reflects only what Russia is requesting.

The published plan envisions considerable concessions for Ukraine, including a neutral status and limitations on military power.

Volgens Oekraïne is bij een Russische raketaanval een groep burgers om het leven gekomen. Die wilde de belegerde Zuid-Oekraïense havenstad Marioepol ontvluchten. De autoriteiten toonden foto's en videobeelden van een zwartgeblakerd voertuig.

Onder de slachtoffers zouden ook kinderen zijn. Het precieze aantal doden moet nog worden vastgesteld. De afgelopen dagen konden duizenden burgers in voertuigen vertrekken uit de omsingelde stad via speciale vluchtroutes

'Russen lijden zware verliezen in Oekraïne: al 13.800 soldaten gesneuveld'

Voor de Russen is het een dag vol tegenslag. Het Pentagon meldt dat de Russen amper vooruit komen, de Britten hebben het over “zware verliezen”. En Oekraïne beweert dat er in totaal al 13.800 Russische soldaten gesneuveld zijn.
De Oekraïense legerstaf beweert dat ze de Russische troepenmacht al 40% verkleinden. Ze hebben het over 13.800 gesneuvelde Russische soldaten en de vernietiging van 430 tanks, 1.375 gepantserde voertuigen, 190 artillerie-eenheden en 108 helikopters.

Een theater waar inwoners van de belegerde stad Marieopol aan het schuilen waren, is gebombardeerd door de Russen, zegt de gemeente. Het lukte Reuters niet om deze informatie te verifiëren. Het is onduidelijk hoeveel slachtoffers hierbij zijn gevallen. Volgens een gebruiker op Twitter gaat het om een groep van 1000 schuilende mensen, maar dit is onmogelijk te controleren.
