SLM Solutions reports skyrocketing sales of additive manufacturing systems
SLM Solutions Group AG, a global provider of metal-based additive manufacturing technology, achieved significant sales growth during the first nine months of 2015 and further bolstered its intake of new machine orders, according to a release from the company.
The company, headquartered in Lübeck, Germany, with a marketing, sales and service office in Novi, MI, saw revenue growth of 80% in the first three quarters of 2015 to reach €33,925,000, besting the previous year's revenue of €18,842,000. New orders were up by 111.5% to €41,766,000 as of September 30, 2015. Revenue and order bookings after nine months are already close to the 2015 revenue target range.

Airbus creates largest 3D printed cabin component, one designed based on human bone structure

Unless you’re leaning against it while you wait for an open lavatory, you might not really think about that partition at the back of an airplane — the nondescript upholstered wall that separates the main cabin from the galley and flight crew’s workstation. Yes, that unremarkable-looking divider prevents passengers from watching their inflight entrees being reheated, but it also supports the weight of the flight crew when they’re sitting in the jump seats that are attached to it. It’s bulky and — each one weighs 143 pounds — which are two words that airline manufacturers hate (passenger comfort are two other words they seem to hate, but we’ll save that for another day).

That’s why Airbus and engineering software company Autodesk recently turned their combined attention to that partition, redesigning it, cutting its weight by 45% and, in the process, creating the world’s largest 3-D printed cabin component. The companies have called it the “bionic partition,” because it was designed based not on other aerospace ideas, but on more biological ones: according to Wired, the structural elements of the frame were based on the growth patterns of slime mold and the smaller elements were designed to “mimic mammalian bone growth,” a micro-lattice shape that makes it both stronger and lighter than existing partitions.

The new partition would be constructed using an aluminium-magnesium-scandium alloy called Scalmalloy, which was designed for use in 3-D printed products. The completed Scalmalloy partition would weigh 66 pounds, a change that is significant enough to improve the aircraft’s carbon emissions. According to Autodesk:

“When applied to the entire cabin and to the current backlog of A320 planes, Airbus estimates that the new design approach can save up to 465,000 metric tons of C02 emissions per year, the equivalent of taking about 96,000 passenger cars off the road for one year.”

The first tests of the partition have already been conducted, and further tests — including an inflight trial — will be conducted next year. Jeff Kowalski, the chief technology officer of Autodesk, said:

“Generative design, additive manufacturing and the development of new materials are already transforming the shape of manufacturing and innovative companies like Airbus are showing what is possible. This is not just an interesting hypothetical experiment – this is a fully functioning component we can expect to see being deployed in aircraft in the very near future.”

So pay your respects to those existing upholstered walls during your next flight. They may not be around much longer.

So hat sich die FIT AG für zwei weitere Anlagen SLM 500 HL (mit vier Lasern) entschieden. Eine weitere SLM 500 HL mit vier Lasern geht an das Unternehmen Pierburg aus Neuss. Eine aus Israel stammende Aerospace Company und ihre strategischen Zulieferer haben zwei SLM 500 HL-Anlagen und eine SLM 125 HL geordert. An ein schottisches Servicebüro geht eine weitere SLM 500 HL mit vier Lasern, es besteht die Option auf eine weitere Maschine im Jahr 2016. Nach Indien wird eine SLM 280 HL an einen Hersteller orthopädischer Implantate geliefert. Weitere Aufträge folgen nun in der Nachbearbeitung der Messe-Leads.“

Vincent spint weer zielsblij dankzij nieuwe 3D-pootjes

Metalen kattenpootjes uit een 3D-printer hebben de gehandicapte kat Vincent wereldberoemd gemaakt. De drie jaar oude kater kreeg de protheses om weer zelfstandig te kunnen rondlopen. Het dier geniet volop van zijn nieuwe mogelijkheden.

Cindy Jones ontfermde zich twee jaar geleden over de drie jaar oude Vincent. De kater miste toen al twee pootjes. Hoe Vincent ooit gehandicapt is geraakt is niet bekend.

Cindy's dochter Emily studeert om dierenarts te worden en besloot Vincent mee te nemen naar Iowa. Hier ontmoette de familie Jones dierenarts Mary Bergh, die Vincent wel wilde opereren.

BioMedtrix,een orthopedisch bedrijf voor dieren leverde twee metalen pootjes uit de 3D-printer. Normaal kosten de hulpstukken duizenden dollars maar het bedrijf doneerde de kattenpootjes.

Na de operatie kon Vincent al gauw lopen. Volgens Cindy is Vincent nu echt een 'blije kat'. Inmiddels is de operatie een paar maanden geleden en rent Vincent vrolijk door het huis. Het enige dat hij niet kan is springen. Volgens Amerikaanse media gaat Vincent nu viraal omdat mensen zo ontroerd zijn door de video van de kat die onlangs verscheen.

Volgens dierenarts Mary zijn er maar 25 dieren op de wereld die metalen pootjes hebben zoals Vincent.

3D-printing kansrijk na daling?

3D-printing is momenteel misschien wel één van de meest fascinerende trends in de wereld. Het is namelijk zo veelomvattend. Van medische 3D-printing toepassingen als het printen van levend kraakbeen tot 3D-geprinte bruggen. De vooruitzichten voor 3D-printing zijn ook nog steeds heel goed. Volgens Wohlers Associates, dat trends in de maakindustrie onderzoekt, zal de jaaromzet van 3D-printing producten in 2020 zijn vervijfvoudigd naar 20,2 miljard dollar. Daarmee is het denk ik een van de snelst groeiende mondiale trends.

Maar de koersontwikkeling van beursgenoteerde ondernemingen die actief zijn in deze 'tak van sport' is al een jaar behoorlijk negatief. Neem bijvoorbeeld Stratasys, de Amerikaanse producent van 3D-printers voor onder meer de luchtvaart- en automotive industrie; het aandeel daalde de afgelopen 12 maanden 72%. En het Duitse Voxeljet, producent van 3D printers voor industrieel gebruik, daalde 41%. Een lichtpuntje is het Zweedse Arcam AB, fabrikant van 3D geprinte onderdelen voor onder meer luchtvaartindustrie, met een plusje van 9% over de laatste 12 maanden.

Unieke producteigenschappen

Moeten we deze trend daarom nu afschrijven? Dat denk ik toch niet. Ten eerste liepen veel beursgenoteerde 3D-print bedrijven vanaf 2011 tot begin 2014 vaak enorm in koers op. De dalingen zijn dus ook een reactie op die voorgaande forse stijgingen. Maar daarnaast stoppen de ontwikkelingen bij 3D-printing bepaald niet.

Kenners zeggen zelfs dat 3D-printing een doorbraak is die vergelijkbaar is met de industriële revolutie. Nieuwe producteigenschappen komen immers binnen handbereik, omdat het maken van mallen niet meer nodig is bij 3D-printing. Vliegtuigbouwers bijvoorbeeld maken nu met 3D-printing onderdelen, waardoor het eindproduct lichter en energiezuiniger, steviger en duurzamer wordt.

Medisch

Vlak ook de medische toepassingen niet uit. In het Amsterdamse VUmc ziekenhuis is dit jaar een machine geïnstalleerd die in staat is levend kraakbeen in een exacte vorm te printen. Daarvoor gebruiken onderzoekers de lichaamseigen cellen van de patiënt. Door het gekweekte kraakbeen te combineren met de geavanceerde print-technologie kan het VUmc perfect op maat gemaakte implantaten maken van levende cellen.

Op niet al te lange termijn wordt het mogelijk weefsels en organen te printen. En er komen daarnaast nog toepassingen van 3D-printing die we ons nu nog niet kunnen voorstellen. Dat is onvermijdelijk bij zo’n vernieuwende techniek, juist omdat de toepassingen zo breed georiënteerd zijn.

Interessant voor beleggers?

De aandelen van ondernemingen die actief zijn in 3D-printing zijn behoorlijk gedaald, maar misschien vormen deze koersniveaus wel een mooi instapmoment(I). De toekomst van 3D-printing is immers zonnig. Daarom sluit ik niet uit dat we over een paar jaar terugkijkend kunnen constateren dat de huidige koersniveaus een mooie koopkans vormden voor beleggers.

"kenners" of adviseurs die spreken over de "3D printing markt" als één geheel kennen de onderdelen van de markt onvoldoende, en mag je voor mij schrappen als "kenner".
Er zijn enorme verschillen in kansen en opbrengsten tussen de verschillende sectoren.
Het eerste onderscheid dat de "kenners" zouden moeten maken is; professioneel printen / versus niet professioneel printen in kunststoffen.
Dan is er een sector metaal-printen (nu alleen nog professioneel).
Keramisch printen is een aparte sector.
Bio-printing is ook weer een zeer specifieke markt met bijzondere kansen en risico's.
En zo zijn er vele deel-sectoren.

Domweg beleggen in 3D printing is zoiets als beleggen in mobiliteit.

Ga je lopen, of neem je de trein?

Order for 10 Arcam EBM systems from Avio Aero

Arcam, listed on NASDAQ Stockholm, today received an order for ten Arcam EBM systems from Avio Aero, a GE Aviation business.

Avio Aero, based in Turin, Italy, a subsidiary of GE Aviation, has successfully been using Arcam’s EBM technology for several years. Avio Aero is moving into series production of state of the art turbine blades, and has decided to double its Arcam EBM machine capacity.

"These machines will be vital to move to series production of turbine blades. Arcam is the leading supplier of titanium alloy additive manufacturing systems and we again turned to them with confidence, having used their products for years", says Giacomo Vessia, Plant Leader at Avio Aero.

Mooie 13% stijging op dit bericht. Heb je gezien dat de CEO van Arcam naar de US verhuist? Beetje vreemd bericht vind ik dat. Hij gaat besturen vanuit het kantoor van Arcam aan de oostkust.

Nee, is totaal niet vreemd:
Alle aandacht wordt op dit moment gericht op de productie van turbinebladen voor vliegtuigmotoren en andere vliegtuigonderdelen (brackets), en in de USA worden 90% van alle motoren gebouwd (bijvoorbeeld Avio Aero in Italie is onderdeel van General Electric)

Why This Swedish 3D-Printing Company is Expanding to the U.S.
As one major player in the 3D-printing industry consolidates its operations in the Boston area, another—this one from overseas—is staffing up.

Arcam, the Swedish maker of metal 3D printers, is beefing up a new 5,500-square-foot facility in Woburn, Mass. Founded in 1997, Arcam is best known for its Electron Beam Melting technology, a process by which an electron beam melts and then builds up powdered metal to create metal parts. Arcam counts General Electric and large-scale aerospace company Pratt & Whitney as customers, among others.

It’s for that specific reason that Arcam opened its Woburn facility in late summer: The company is interested in tapping more into the U.S. aerospace and medical industries, two sectors where 3D printers capable of producing metal finished products are in increasing demand.

Now it appears Arcam CEO Magnus René will be relocating to Woburn as well to lead the expansion.

“The reason for my relocation is that I will focus more on the U.S. market where options, growth potentials, and strategic opportunities are huge,” René said in a news release.
