MOL Starts Hydrogen Production using Plug Power Electrolyzers

MOL Group has teamed up with leading provider of turnkey hydrogen solutions for the global green hydrogen economy Plug Power Inc to build one of Europe’s largest-capacity green hydrogen production facilities at MOL’s Danube Refinery in Százhalombatta in Hungary. Green hydrogen will reduce the carbon footprint of the Danube Refinery operation and enable emission-free mobility in the longer term.

Utilizing a 10-megawatt electrolysis unit from Plug Power, MOL’s EUR 22 million facility will be able to produce approximately 1,600 tons of clean, carbon-neutral, green hydrogen annually, removing up to 25,000 tons of carbon dioxide by displacing the currently used natural gas-based production process. As this process represents one-sixth of the carbon dioxide emissions of MOL Group, this investment supports MOL’s carbon neutrality goals and will contribute to energy independence for the region.

Once operational in 2023, MOL will use the green hydrogen in its Danube Refinery during fuel production of its own hydrogen system. It will be incorporated into the molecules of MOL fuels, lowering the carbon outputs from the production technology and the final product.

Sumitomo & Rio Tinto to Build Hydrogen Project at Yarwun Refinery

Japan’s Sumitomo Corp will partner with Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto to develop a 2 MW green hydrogen production facility at the miner’s Yarwun refinery in the Australian state of Queensland, while exploring the potential of hydrogen as a replacement for gas in the alumina refining process. The pilot project, which is expected to produce up to 300 tons of green hydrogen per annum, will also supply the Gladstone Hydrogen Ecosystem. The collaboration includes Sumitomo, Gladstone Ports Corp, the Gladstone Regional Council, Australian Gas Networks, and CQUniversity Australia.

The ecosystem will be complemented by the use of hydrogen to replace gas in the alumina refining process at Yarwun, a project which Sumitomo Australia national hydrogen commercialisation manager Alana Barlow said could provide a pathway for reducing emissions in otherwise hard-to-abate industries.

It will initially pursue domestic offtake and mobility solutions before moving to enable large-scale exports.

Hornblower to Build Hydrogen Bunkering Station in San Francisco

Hornblower Group has received an USD 8 million grant from the US Department of Energy to design, construct and operate a first-of-its-kind green hydrogen bunker fueling station for ferries and other maritime vessels in San Francisco. The floating and moveable system will be the first of its kind in the world to produce green hydrogen through the use of hydroelectric power, demonstrating the use of zero-carbon hydroelectric energy in the electrolysis of water to produce green hydrogen for ferry and maritime vessels, as well as for growing land uses (such as hydrogen fuel cell vehicles). The system is also compatible with other zero-carbon sources of electricity, for example offshore wind. Project completion is anticipated for 2025 with fueling expected to be available in 2024 and thereafter.

With this build, Hornblower will demonstrate the feasibility and viability of hydrogen production, storage, and fueling on the water, establishing robust science-based protocols, procedures, operating parameters, and attendant training materials for the safe and routine generation and storage of electrolyzed hydrogen and handling of water-to-water and water-to-land hydrogen and fuel-cell power transfer.

Nel Bags Electrolyser Order from India

Nel Hydrogen Electrolyser AS has received purchase order from an undisclosed Indian refinery for an alkaline electrolyser to provide hydrogen for oleochemicals production. The purchase order has a value of approximately EUR 2 million, and delivery of the equipment is expected to be mid-2023.

Oleochemicals are used in a broad range of products and industries, like metalworking lubricants, additives for plastics, rubber and paper production, automotive lubricants, greases and fuel additives, and personal care products such as soaps, lotions, cosmetics and deodorants.

APA & WesCEF to Develop Hydrogen Pipeline in Australia

APA Group and Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy and Fertilisers WesCEF have signed a memorandum of understanding to undertake pre-feasibility study to assess the viability to produce and transport green hydrogen via APA’s Parmelia Gas Pipeline. This pre-feasibility study builds on work already undertaken by APA Group to test the Parmelia Gas Pipeline for hydrogen compatibility – early test results indicate that the pipeline will be suitable for 100 per cent hydrogen service without any requirement to reduce the operating pressure of the pipeline.

Leading Australian energy infrastructure business APA Group and Wesfarmers Chemicals, Energy and Fertilisers WesCEF will investigate the opportunity to produce and transport green hydrogen to WesCEF’s production facilities in Kwinana. If successful, green hydrogen could facilitate the production of green ammonia and other sustainable chemicals, and take a section of APA’s Parmelia Gas Pipeline a step closer to becoming a pure renewable hydrogen service.

Under the MoU, the pre-feasibility will be jointly funded and will assess the viability of green hydrogen production and transportation by APA’s Parmelia Gas Pipeline to WesCEF’s production facilities in the Kwinana industrial area.

This study follows world leading hydrogen research that APA commenced last year to test the ability of 43- kilometres of Parmelia Gas Pipeline to carry up to 100 per cent hydrogen.

The results from APA’s first phase of testing on the Parmelia Gas Pipeline are proving to be promising after they were validated through comparative testing by a world-renowned independent laboratory.

Phase two testing, which is supported by $300,000 of grant funding from the Western Australian government, is currently underway and involves testing the pipeline material in a gaseous hydrogen environment and comparing the pipeline material performance against the results from phase one and the international research.

The testing is being carried out at the University of Wollongong, in partnership with the Future Fuels Cooperative Research Centre, in a state-of-the-art testing lab – which is the first lab of its kind in Australia.

Vertex Hydrogen Launched in UK

Vertex Hydrogen is a transformative new joint venture between Essar and Progressive Energy formed to provide a catalyst for a low carbon economy across North West England and North Wales, as a central part of the HyNet decarbonisation cluster. A total investment of approximately GBP 1 billion will be committed to deliver the hydrogen production hub. The UK’s first low carbon hydrogen plant will sit at the heart of the HyNet low carbon cluster. Beginning production in 2026, it will generate over 1GW of hydrogen, the equivalent to the energy used by a major British city region, for example Liverpool.

Waste fuel gases from Essar Stanlow, and natural gas, will be converted by Vertex Hydrogen into hydrogen, with carbon dioxide safely captured and stored by HyNet partner Eni SpA, underground offshore in Liverpool Bay. The hydrogen production hub will provide low carbon energy to replace fossil fuels in industry across the HyNet region, as well as heating homes, and fuelling buses, trains and trucks.

The hydrogen produced will, in the first instance, be utilised by Essar to reduce its carbon footprint at the Stanlow Manufacturing Complex. In addition, Vertex will also provide low carbon hydrogen to a wide range of businesses, including companies from the chemicals, ceramics, paper, glass and flexible power generation sectors, such as Tata Chemicals Europe, Encirc, InterGen, Solvay, Ingevity, Novelis, Glass Futures and Saica Paper – all having expressed interest already. More widely in the region, companies such as Pilkington are demonstrating use of hydrogen in their facilities. Cadent Gas Ltd is also developing the UK’s first multi-user hydrogen distribution network within HyNet.

Superior Plus & Charbone to Supply Hydrogen in Quebec

Toronto based Superior Plus Corp announced that Superior Propane and Charbone Hydrogen Corporation have entered into a supply and logistics agreement to provide green hydrogen to commercial and industrial customers located initially in Quebec in Canada. Pursuant to the Agreement, Superior and Charbone will leverage their collective expertise in mobile energy distribution and green hydrogen production to bring green hydrogen to the Quebec market, providing a convenient green energy option for businesses looking to reduce their carbon emissions and advance sustainability goals.

Under the terms of the Agreement, Charbone will provide Superior with green hydrogen from its Sorel-Tracy, Quebec facility with initial deliveries expected as early as the third quarter of 2022. Superior’s industry leading energy distribution business in Canada, Superior Propane, will be responsible for delivering hydrogen directly from Charbone’s facility to Superior’s existing and new customers. These customers include mining, power generation, transportation and industrial energy users.

Superior is a leading North American distributor and marketer of propane and distillates and related products and services, servicing over 890,000 customer locations in the US and Canada.

Charbone is a Canadian green hydrogen group established in North America. The company’s strategy consists in developing modular and expandable hydrogen facilities.

Hyster to Provide Hydrogen Powered Terminal Tractor to HHLA

Greenville North Carolina based Hyster has announced a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding to provide Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG with two Hyster electric container handling vehicles, including the first-ever empty container handler powered by fuel cell technology in a real-world application. In addition, this will be the first Hyster terminal tractor supplied in Europe. Both units will be powered by Nuvera fuel cells and run on hydrogen fuel produced locally at the HHLA Hamburg Green Hydrogen Hub.

The hydrogen fuel cell-powered empty container handler is a result of intense collaboration and rigorous application analysis. It will be powered by a single, 60-kilowatt Nuvera fuel cell, while the terminal tractor will be powered by a 45-kilowatt Nuvera fuel cell. Both trucks will share many of the same components such as drive motor, battery modules, converters, hydrogen tanks and controls. This design approach offers a level of familiarity for operators who have experience with other Hyster big trucks and helps limit complexity, cost of design, manufacturing, service and maintenance.

The hydrogen fuel cell-powered equipment from Hyster will be deployed at HHLA Container Terminal Tollerort in Hamburg. It is planned to equip CTT with a refueling infrastructure and connect the terminal to the future Hamburg hydrogen grid. A possible phase two of the H2LOAD project includes the rollout of hydrogen fuel cell equipment and infrastructure to several HHLA locations in Central and Eastern Europe.

Plug Power & Olin to Produce Green Hydrogen to Serve North America

Globetrotter Otto Waterlander (ex-Shell, ex-McKinsey) was maar net begonnen aan zijn vernieuwingsklus in het Oekraïense staatsgasbedrijf Naftogaz in Kiev, toen Russische troepen binnenvielen. „Naftogaz zat vlak voor een enorme groei van het energie-aanbod. Ik ben heel trots op Oekraïners, hoe ze stand houden en hoop houden”, aldus de routinier, die nu aan een miljardenoperatie in waterstof werkt.

„Ik had er vrienden, we waren met enorme vernieuwingen bezig. Met zijn olie- en gasbedrijven, en duurzame energie die we ontwikkelden, kon het totaal zelfvoorzienend worden. Dat is allemaal gestokt.” RENE OUDSHOORN

Aan het Scheveningse strand krijgt hij even rust. Maar de Oekraïners, zijn oud-collega’s, spoken door het hoofd. Hij belt, sommigen volgt hij op sociale media. „Het is vreselijk en onvoorstelbaar wat hen en het land wordt aangedaan. Het zijn zulke geweldige mensen.”

Waterlander had in krap een jaar nieuw management opgebouwd bij Naftogaz, een bedrijf met 50.000 werknemers. Kort voor de eerste bombardementen keerde hij terug naar Nederland. „Het werd te gevaarlijk. Iedereen trok weg.” Hij overwoog te blijven. „Ik had er vrienden, we waren met enorme vernieuwingen bezig. Oekraïne was in transitie. Met zijn olie- en gasbedrijven, en duurzame energie die we ontwikkelden, kon het totaal zelfvoorzienend worden. Dat voelden mensen ook. Mijn team zag dat we grote impact kregen, met veel nieuwe banen. Dat is allemaal gestokt.”

Wat kan Oekraïne na de oorlog?

„Oekraïners zijn enorm harde werkers. Ze zijn goed opgeleid en ze staan er voor elkaar. Dat zie je nu terug in de oorlog. Bewonderenswaardig, puur vanuit hun aard. De historie van Oekraïne onder het communisme, dat je al vroeg leerde dat je niet van de staat op aan kunt, heeft hen zelfstandig gemaakt. Dat zal, als hopelijk de oorlog voorbij is, straks helpen bij herstel. Maar ik maak me zorgen over wat voor land er overblijft.”

Wat wil Poetin?

„Veel is ook mij nog onduidelijk. Ik vrees dat hij Oekraïne totaal wil verarmen. Oekraïne is voor Poetin te groot om permanent te kunnen bezetten. Zijn militaire acties zijn er nu op gericht om in het oosten van Oekraïne de belangrijkste olie- en gasvelden af te sluiten, en doorvoer van Oekraïens graan en andere grondstoffen naar de Zwarte Zee te stoppen. Dat is misschien 20% van het land, maar wel het rijkste deel. Dat afsnijden krijgt overigens grote consequenties, ook voor Europa. Onze voedselvoorziening en industrie worden geraakt. Meer nog dan nu.”

Deel 2:

Wat kan Europa voor Oekraïne doen?

„Nu al helpen om straks een zeer gedegen juridisch systeem op te zetten, met onafhankelijke rechters, waar regels te handhaven zijn. Anders gaan miljarden aan hulp verloren, die nu worden klaargezet voor herstel. Helaas. Ik maak me daar zorgen om. Oekraïne maakt nu dramatische tijden door, en ik bewonder hun moedige leider Zelenski enorm, maar het land kende ook veel corruptie. Dat zat overal. Nederlandse ondernemers konden daarmee niet uit de voeten. Zonder meer rechtszekerheid zullen buitenlandse investeerders aarzelen en wegblijven. Terwijl investeren absoluut nodig wordt. Zelenski deed ook weinig met markthervormingen, dat is cruciaal voor bedrijven om er te investeren. Wij hebben daarbij een belang: Oekraïne behoort in alles bij Europa, niet bij Rusland.”

Wanneer voelde u onraad?

„Vanuit Nederland niet goed te merken, Rusland leek wat afzijdig te blijven in Oekraïne. Ondanks de bezetting in het oosten. Maar in de zomer van 2020 kondigde ik aan dat we met Naftogaz naar de Zwarte Zee zouden uitbreiden. Binnen vier uur reageerde een Russisch parlementslid op mijn uitspraak. Wat we deden volgden de Russen scherp. Wij produceerden 20 miljard kuub gas, het land had potentie om naar 60 miljard kuub te gaan. Om het land zelfvoorzienend te maken, was 30 miljard nodig. Oekraïne had dus een enorm exportpotentieel. Geopolitiek en economisch had dat consequenties voor Rusland.”

Waarom stapte u over naar Tree Energy Solutions (TES) van investeerder Marcel van Poecke?

„Ik kijk al jaren naar waterstof, maar het was allemaal nog in ontwikkeling. Hier krijg ik de gelegenheid om impact te hebben: met onze investeringen in waterstoffabrieken op grote, industriële schaal kunnen we de uitstoot drastisch beperken. We gaan op omvangrijke schaal waterstof naar Europa brengen. Op plekken waar je anders geen duurzame energie kan krijgen tegen lage kosten. Waterstof kun je verplaatsen. We gaan clusters met chemie-, beton- en staalbedrijven die op fossiele brandstoffen draaien, overzetten op waterstof zonder fossiele uitstoot. Tegelijkertijd vangen we hun CO2-uitstoot af. De CO2 waarvoor bedrijven certificaten moeten kopen, om het te mogen uitstoten. Dus het is een gesloten systeem geworden, zodat bedrijven volgens klimaatakkoorden geen vervuilende emissies meer hebben.”

Dat lijkt mooi, maar het is toekomstmuziek.

„Nee, die ontwikkelfase is achter ons, het gaat zo snel in de praktijk. Afvangen van CO2 en vervangen kan al, dat zal in combinatie met groene energie heel gangbaar worden. Bedrijven werken dan alleen met fossielvrij groen gas. Zoals je vloeibaar gemaakt gas, de lng, gebruikt. De infrastructuur is er al. Dit doen we in Duitsland, dat gaan we in heel Noordwest-Europa uitrollen.”

Als het goed draait, waarom is subsidie nodig?

„Het zorgt voor een versnelling. De subsidie zorgt er nu voor dat Duitsland in 2045 zonder emissie kan werken, met de huidige techniek. Dat kun je gewoon meten. Dat is vijf jaar eerder dan eerder gepland. Terwijl ik zie dat er van overal nog zoveel nieuwe technologie aan komt. Ik ben heel optimistisch over de komende tien, vijftien jaar.”

Hoe doet Nederland het?

„Nederland is ideaal: het heeft met zijn gasnetwerk de beste infrastructuur liggen in heel Europa. Dat is voor groene waterstof te gebruiken. Het is alleen jammer dat Jetten het niet goed stimuleert. Zeg niet tegen Nederlanders: ga van het gas af, maar zeg dat we samen van fossiel gas af gaan. Dan snappen mensen het. Vervuiling drastisch verminderen, want het waterstof komt eraan. Bereid mensen voor. Dat je CO2 kunt afvangen en als transportmiddel kunt gebruiken voor groen gas, dat zien veel mensen nog niet, maar het is al realiteit. De CO2-reductie ís nog niet opgelost, maar het gaat wel heel snel.”

Investering €25 miljard in energie
Otto Waterlander is met Tree Energy Solutions (TES), het investeringsvehikel voor groene waterstof van oliemiljardair Marcel van Poecke, een deal van €2,5 miljard aan het sluiten voor de bouw van een lng-terminal nabij de waterstoffabriek in Duitsland die al gepland was. De Duitse overheid biedt steun. De lng-terminal kan binnen drie jaar gereed zijn, zegt hij. De behoefte aan het liquified natural gas (lng), maar vooral het op grote schaal te produceren schone waterstof ’uit groene bron’, groeit enorm snel, stelt hij, nu Europese landen zich van Russische grondstoffen willen afkeren. De kapitaalinjectie in het project in Wilhelmshaven is onderdeel van een groter plan, waarvoor de investeringen van TES in schone brandstoffen tot €25 miljard kunnen oplopen. Volgens Waterlander zal groene waterstof in Europa de norm worden. „Vanwege de lage kosten en nul uitstoot.”

CV
Otto Waterlander (57, Apeldoorn) kent de gas- en oliewereld tot in de haarvaten. Na zeven jaar studie economie aan de Erasmus Universiteit in Rotterdam, begint hij in 1990 bij Shell als bedrijfseconoom voor investeringsanalyses. Na bijna drie jaar volgt de Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij, waarin Shell de helft bezit, en bouwt hij vanaf 1995 een nieuwe afdeling voor Shell op in Venezuela. Na bijna acht jaar als afdelingshoofd bij Shell in chemie en de upstream (exploratie en winning) voor olie en gas, werkt hij zeventien jaar bij consultant Booz Allen Hamilton, waarbij hij de laatste elf jaar als partner bedrijven en overheden adviseert. In 2014 trekt McKinsey Waterlander aan als senior partner. Hij wordt in januari 2020 bestuurder bij Naftogaz in Kiev, het grootste staatsgasbedrijf van Oekraïne. Eind vorig jaar komt Waterlander terug en start bij het Belgische TES, investeerder in groene waterstof. Otto Waterlander is getrouwd en heeft twee dochters.

Elon Musk ziet geen heil in waterstof: “Het stomste wat ik me kan voorstellen als energieopslagsysteem”

Tesla-CEO Elon Musk ziet het potentieel van waterstof voor de energietransitie niet. Meer nog: in een interview met de zakenkrant Financial Times (FT) op de ‘Future of the Car’-conferentie dinsdag, deed hij hard z’n best om de reputatie van de energiedrager volledig te slopen.
Waarom is dit belangrijk?
Waterstof wordt door het Internationaal Energieagentschap (IEA) omschreven als een "veelzijdige energiedrager". In 2019 zei het IEA dat waterstof "een van de toonaangevende opties was voor de opslag van energie uit hernieuwbare energiebronnen (…)."

Waterstof is de jongste jaren in opmars. Het kan volgens sommige bedrijfsleiders en wetenschappers de oplossing bieden om zonder al te veel kleerscheuren onze levensstijl naar het tijdperk van de nuluitstoot te gidsen. Daarom werd elektrische wagen-magnaat Musk gevraagd of hij óok dacht dat waterstof een rol te spelen had bij de overgang van een energiesysteem gebaseerd op fossiele energiebronnen naar eentje dat steunde op CO2-neutrale energie.

“Nee”, antwoordde hij resoluut. “Ik kan dit echt niet genoeg benadrukken – het aantal keren dat mij over waterstof gevraagd is, (…) – het is meer dan 100 keer, misschien wel 200 keer”, klonk het. “Het is belangrijk te begrijpen dat als je een middel wilt om energie op te slaan, waterstof een slechte keuze is.”

Voortbordurend op zijn betoog verklaarde Musk verder dat er “gigantische tanks” nodig zouden zijn om waterstof in vloeibare vorm op te slaan. Als het in gasvormige vorm zou worden opgeslagen, zouden er “nog grotere” tanks nodig zijn, opperde de flamboyante techmiljardair.

Groen?

Er zijn verschillende manieren om de energiedrager te produceren, elk aangeduid met kleuren.

De ‘ster’ van het moment is ‘groene’ waterstof. De methode hierbij omvat het gebruik van elektrolyse, waarbij een elektrische stroom water splitst in zuurstof en waterstof. Als de elektriciteit die bij dit proces wordt gebruikt afkomstig is van een hernieuwbare bron zoals wind- of zonne-energie, wordt dit groene waterstof genoemd. Maar: productie van groene waterstof vreet elektriciteit, en is dus peperduur.

Waterstofprojecten die gebruik maken van elektrolyse hebben de laatste jaren niettemin de belangstelling getrokken van grote bedrijven en bedrijfsleiders. Toch is Musk hoegenaamd geen fan. “De efficiëntie van elektrolyse is (…) slecht”, opperde hij op de auto-top. “Je bent dus echt veel energie kwijt om (…) waterstof en zuurstof te splitsen. Vervolgens moet je de waterstof en zuurstof scheiden en onder druk zetten – ook dat kost veel energie.”

“En als je dan ook nog (…) waterstof vloeibaar moet maken, oh mijn God”, ging hij verder. “De hoeveelheid energie die nodig is om (…) waterstof te maken en in vloeibare vorm om te zetten is duizelingwekkend. Of blauw?

Er is ook ‘blauwe’ waterstof. De methode bij dit kleur bestaat erin aardgas te splitsen in waterstof en kooldioxide, en vervolgens de CO2 op te vangen en op te slaan om te voorkomen dat deze de planeet opwarmt. Tot nu toe werd het beschouwd als een koolstofarm (niet koolstofvrij) alternatief. Dit omdat niet alle CO2 die bij de productie ervan vrijkomt, kan worden afgevangen.

Ook waarschuwden auteurs van een studie vorig jaar dat bij de productie van blauwe waterstof per ongeluk methaan vrijkomt, een krachtig broeikasgas, en dat er enorm veel energie nodig is om kooldioxide af te scheiden en op te slaan. En van dat laatste zal er uiteindelijk toch een deel ontsnappen.

Het overgrote deel van de waterstofproductie is momenteel ‘grijs’: gebaseerd op aardgas of andere koolwaterstoffen. “Als je koolwaterstoffen kraakt, heb je het probleem van de fossiele brandstoffen écht niet opgelost”, wist Musk daarover nog te vertellen.
Niet aan proefstuk toe

Musk is niet aan z’n proefstuk toe wat kritiek op waterstof en -brandcellen betreft.

Een paar jaar geleden, toen het onderwerp ter sprake kwam tijdens een discussie op het Automotive News World Congress, beschreef de techmiljardair waterstofbrandstofcellen namelijk als “extreem dwaas”.

In juni 2020 tweette hij: “fuel cells = fool sells“, en voegde er in juli van dat jaar aan toe: “Hydrogen fool sells make no sense.” Te oordelen naar zijn opmerkingen deze week, is hij niet van standpunt veranderd.

Baowu’s TISCO Develops Stainless Steel for Hydrogen Projects

Chinese steel giant Baowu recently announced that its unit TISCO has launched the first stainless steel products for liquid hydrogen in China and passed the relevant certification, becoming the only domestic supplier of such products. It has signed batch orders with the world's largest hydrogen producer and the leading enterprise in the field of hydrogen energy infrastructure, and the products will be used in one of the largest domestic hydrogen energy projects in Asia.

The development of TISCO's special stainless steel for liquid hydrogen has successfully filled the gap of stainless steel for civilian liquid hydrogen pressure vessels in China and promoted the development and improvement of related standards in China.

Gasunie & Vopak to Develop Hydrogen Import Infrastructure

Gasunie & Vopak have entered into a cooperation agreement to jointly develop future terminal infrastructure projects that will facilitate the necessary imports of hydrogen into Northwest Europe via Dutch and German ports. Both parties have been working together in the Gate LNG-terminal in the Port of Rotterdam that came into operation in 2011.

The cooperation agreement includes import projects for hydrogen through green ammonia, liquid organic hydrogen carriers, and liquid hydrogen technologies. To safely and reliably handle products like hydrogen and ammonia, high quality infrastructure and operations are needed. Vopak and Gasunie will focus on developing import infrastructure related to storage that enables further distribution of hydrogen to end users (e.g. by means of pipeline, vessels, road and rail) and contributes to the security of supply in Northwest Europe. Both parties have a long track record in developing infrastructure and safely storing and handling these types of products.

As independent infrastructure companies Gasunie and Vopak will focus solely on the development as well as safe and reliable operation of open access infrastructure. Open access logistics infrastructure that is available to all market parties is most effective, both from a cost and environmental footprint perspective. It can further accelerate the import and use of green energy to a wide range of end markets.

Nortegas Starts H2SAREA Demonstration Project

Spanish natural gas distributor Nortegas has launched the H2SAREA demonstration project to study the impact of hydrogen blending on gas infrastructure and equipment as it increases the proportion of hydrogen in the mixture. The project consists of researching new technology, equipment, and components that will allow natural gas networks to be transformed to distribute hydrogen in different blending scenarios: hydrogen injection systems, advanced compression systems, development of specific smart fixers for hydrogen, research into new materials and components suitable to be used in both 100% hydrogen environments and in variable natural-gas-hydrogen mixes, modular hydrogen separation systems, sensors, burners, and more. The goal is to establish and obtain the necessary technology to progressively transformation its distribution network and use incremental hydrogen/natural gas mixes until 100% hydrogen is achieved.

The H2SAREA project will last three years. The initial research and development will be carried out at the Tecnalia and Ikerlan technology centers. This will include the H2Loop research platform, which will allow new developments to be tested, along with the behavior of materials and components in contact with hydrogen and natural gas-hydrogen mixes. In a first phase, the analysis of the hydrogen injection will be up to 20% and the percentages will then be gradually increased in a second phase up to 100% hydrogen.

The project, led by Nortegas, is being conducted by a consortium whose members ABC Compressors, CAE, SLFIDEGAS, H2Site, Erreka Fastening Solutions, and Orkli. It is also working with two of the main technology centers of the Basque Science, Technology, and Innovation Network: Tecnalia and Ikerlan; and the National Hydrogen Center.

Nortegas, which bills itself as the second largest gas distributor in Spain, operates a 8,500 kilometre long network and conducts business in Spain’s northern regions the Basque Country, Asturias and Cantabria.

Vertex Hydrogen Unveils Report on Hydrogen Production in UK

Vertex Hydrogen, the joint venture between Essar Oil UK and Progressive Energy, has unveiled a report detailing the development of the UK’s first ever large-scale low carbon hydrogen production plant. The report has been launched by consortium partners Essar, Progressive Energy, Kent and Johnson Matthey to share learnings as to how they are designing and developing the ground-breaking hydrogen production plant. Hydrogen is critical to the UK’s future energy mix, providing a low carbon solution to fuel vital to heavy industry.

The plant, to be owned and operated by Vertex Hydrogen, is being engineered by Kent and will use UK company Johnson Matthey’s best in class Low Carbon Hydrogen technology at Essar’s Stanlow Manufacturing Complex in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. The Front End Engineering Design was funded by the Government’s Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy hydrogen supply competition.

The report explains how natural gas, and refinery fuel gas, will be converted into low carbon hydrogen whilst capturing carbon dioxide to be permanently stored under the sea bed in Liverpool Bay. The hub will produce 1GW of low carbon hydrogen with the first production line starting in the mid 2020’s.

Low carbon hydrogen will replace fossil fuels in industry across the North West England and North Wales, helping the UK to decarbonise towards our net zero commitments and positioning a hydrogen economy as a catalyst for low carbon growth. Industry in the region across the chemicals, ceramics, paper, glass and flexible power generation sectors have already made commitments to reduce their carbon footprint using low carbon hydrogen from HyNet. This includes a wide range of companies such as Tata Chemicals Europe, Encirc, InterGen, Solvay, Ingevity, Novelis, Pilkington Glass and Saica Paper.

The report follows Vertex’s submission of the company’s plans to BEIS last month to build the UK’s first low carbon hydrogen production hub with the HyNet cluster as part of the Government’s Cluster Sequencing process.

ATCO to Build Hydrogen Stations in Alberta for CP’s Locomotives

Calgary Alberta based Canadian Utilities Limited ATCO Group has announced an agreement to provide Canadian Pacificwith engineering, procurement and construction services for two hydrogen production and refuelling facilities in Alberta. ATCO is actively developing several hydrogen projects in Canada and Australia, including production, blending and refuelling facilities to drive down emissions and help progress the energy transition. The hydrogen infrastructure at each CP site will include a 1MW electrolyzer, compression, storage and dispensing for locomotive refuelling. In Calgary, the electrolyzer will be powered in part by renewable electricity from CP's existing 5 MW solar power facility co-located at CP's headquarters. Construction of facilities is expected to begin later this year with production and supply of hydrogen being provided to locomotives in 2023.

The construction of the hydrogen facilities at CP's Calgary and Edmonton railyards will advance CP's innovative Hydrogen Locomotive Program, which has set its sights on building North America's first line-haul hydrogen-powered freight locomotive. CP's financial commitment to its Hydrogen Locomotive Program has been supported by CAD 15 million in funding, awarded in 2021 by Emissions Reduction Alberta.

ATOME Energy Signs PPA with ANDE in Paraguay

Green energy company focused on green hydrogen and ammonia production, sales and marketing with current projects in Europe and South America ATOME Energy announced the signing of a long term PPA with ANDE, the state electricity and power distribution company of Paraguay, for the supply of 60MW of green power generated through Paraguay's existing hydroelectric power resources. This is the largest PPA ever signed between ANDE and an industrial user. The pricing of the power is on the lowest industrial standard user tariff available and will allow ATOME to compete effectively on both domestic and world markets. No consideration is payable for the entry into the PPA.

The power which is the subject of the PPA is already available through a new substation built by ANDE in Villeta, an important industrial centre 35 km downstream from the capital Asuncion on the River Paraguay. Villeta is the main export port in Paraguay as well as the home of many key industries including fertiliser and cement companies which are ATOME's natural off-take partners.

Whilst the 60MW facility in its own right is of world scale, the signing of this watershed agreement represents the first in a series of ATOME's programme for large scale green hydrogen and ammonia production units and is in addition to the 250MW+ projected facility in Paraguay utilising available power from the ITAIPU hydroelectric dam, the second largest dam by output in the world, in respect of which planning work has already commenced.

With the PPA now executed, the next steps of the project comprise the execution of the planning, engineering, procurement, logistics, build out and commissioning stages. From the appointment of the owner's engineer, ATOME intends to move swiftly to the commissioning of the full FEED work (including procurement and financial planning) with anticipated FID in H2 2022 with the objective of commissioning of the facility and commencement of production at Villeta within 3 years from now.
