The world's leading automakers are making much faster progress than anticipated in moving away from electric vehicle (EV) batteries that contain cobalt.

VW, Tesla, and the Chinese EV giant BYD (the world’s second-largest EV maker) have all either developed new cobalt-free batteries or are in late-stage development.

This is potentially very bad news for the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) that is home to approximately 60% of the world’s known cobalt reserves.

Chinese EV battery maker Envision to build $2.4 billion plant for Renault

Green tech group signs deal with Nissan's French partner and seeks growth in Europe.

Chinese green tech company Envision Group plans to invest 2 billion euros ($2.4 billion) in a battery plant in France to supply Renault Group, underlining how Asian companies are aiming for a major slice of Europe's electric vehicle supply chain.

Envision and the French automaker -- which is in a car making alliance with Japan's Nissan Motor and Mitsubishi Motors -- announced the plans on Monday. Zhang Lei, Envision's founder and chief executive, is due to meet French President Emmanuel Macron and the automaker's officials on a visit to France on Monday, a group spokesperson said.

The factory will be built in partnership with Renault in Douai, northern France, near the automaker's existing plant. Its capacity will reach 9 gigawatt hours per year by 2024 and 24 GWh by 2030, Renault said in a statement.

Democratic Republic of Congo, child labour and your electric car

Child labour, toxic leaks: the price we could pay for a greener future. In the case of cobalt, 60% of the world’s supply comes from the Democratic Republic of the Congo where large numbers of unregulated mines use children as young as seven as miners. There they breathe in cobalt-laden dust that can cause fatal lung ailments while working tunnels that are liable to collapse.

This is problematic for automakers who are building their burgeoning EV businesses on the premise that their vehicles are better for the planet. But if better for the planet focuses just on air quality and the environment rather than people, those brands could become the targets of social media campaigns.

Automakers have suffered mightily this year due to the semiconductor shortage and are doing everything they can to ensure that other vital components in their supply chains do not suffer similar constraints. But given that China is the dominant actor in the global cobalt market, controlling an estimated 40% of the extraction in places like the DRC, and of the processing, Beijing could leverage its position to cut off the supply to US and European automakers as it did with rare earths exports to Japan in 2010.

What China’s increasing control over cobalt resources in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) means for the West

The threats are related to the security of supply, as increasingly close ties between the two countries could pose problems to those in the West looking to build up self-contained localized battery supply chains.

What’s the West to do?

The DRC hosts over 51% of the global cobalt reserves, according to 2019 data released by the US Geological Survey.

Roskill estimates that, in 2020, the central African country produced about 90kt Cobalt in various intermediates representing nearly 70% of the total cobalt feedstock production globally.

Prior to the recent announcement, over 40% of the cobalt mining capacity in the DRC was already controlled by Chinese companies as a result of decades-long investment and development in the country, with several resource-for-infrastructure deals having been signed and implemented since the 1990s.

“On the cobalt refining side, particularly for the production of chemicals suitable for battery applications, China plays an even more dominant role, with its production of cobalt sulphate and oxides accounting for around 80% of the global total output in 2020,” the report reads.

What are western countries to do to mitigate such supply risk in the years ahead?

Locking in feedstock with long-term agreements is a first good step, Roskill says. They should also utilize alternative feeds, such as recycling, and develop resources elsewhere.

SVOLT unveils cobalt-free battery, claiming first company to reach ‘series production

Battery systems manufacturer SVOLT has unveiled a cobalt-free battery pack at the Chengdu Motor Show in China. The company now claims to be the first to create a cobalt-free battery that has reached series production, although other battery manufacturers have claimed similar production achievements.

SVOLT describes itself as a “high-tech enterprise in the global EV battery industry.” The company exists as a spinoff of Chinese auto manufacturer Great Wall Motors and specializes in batteries and battery packs.

The company currently employs nearly 3,000 people worldwide, half of whom work in research and development (R&D). In fact, SVOLT has shared that over the past several years, it has dedicated 1,200 R&D personnel to cobalt-free batteries alone.

Additionally, the company has invested over 500 million yuan ($77.3 million) in research and development of cobalt-free batteries.

These investments appear to have paid off, as SVOLT has now unveiled its cobalt-free battery pack. Furthermore, the company claims to be the first to bring these batteries to series production

Cost: EV batteries are made with a combination of minerals and metals including cobalt, nickel, lithium, manganese, aluminium and iron. But cobalt is by far the costliest. The blue metal makes up 20% of a standard EV battery and at $45,000 a tonne that forces up the price of the vehicle. For VW’s new ID.4 EV, the cobalt only adds $850 to the sticker price.

Verstoringen aanvoerketen drukken op productie Nio
Minder afleveringen voorzien.

(ABM FN-Dow Jones) Nio verwacht in het derde kwartaal minder auto's te kunnen afleveren dan eerder voorzien door verstoringen in de aanvoerketen. Dit maakte de Chinese fabrikanten van elektrische auto's woensdag bekend.

Waar de fabrikant eerder nog rekende op 23.000 tot 25.000 auto's, mikt het bedrijf nu op 22.500 tot 23.500 voertuigen.

In augustus wist Nio net geen 5.900 auto's af te leveren, wat op jaarbasis een stijging van ruim 48 procent is.

Het aandeel Nio lijkt vanmiddag op de NYSE ruim 4 procent lager te gaan openen.

How China Dominates Global Battery Supply Chain

After years of planning, China now dominates the world’s production of new generation batteries that are key to transitioning away from fossil fuels. These new batteries are essential for electric vehicles and most portable consumer electronics such as cell phones and laptops.

By 2040, energy analysts estimate over half of all passenger vehicles sold worldwide could be electric, according to 2019 report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. They expect a similar percentage of light commercial vehicles in the U.S., Europe and China sales will be electric within that time, BNEF predicts.

If current trends continue, most of them will likely use Chinese batteries, a key element for transitioning away from fossil fuels, and most of those batteries will be lithium ion, which are also popular for cellphones and laptops because of their high energy per unit mass relative to other electrical energy storage systems, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

“Looking at the global automotive industry chain, China, for the first time, has taken the lead in the world in the manufacturing of key parts," state media Xinhua said in a report titled "China's dominant position in batteries needs to be further consolidated."

Graphite, cobalt, lithium

According to data released from Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, a London-based research firm for the lithium-ion battery industry, in 2019, Chinese chemical companies accounted for 80% of the world’s total output of raw materials for advanced batteries.

"Of the 136 lithium-ion battery plants in the pipeline to 2029, 101 are based in China," the firm said in May.

"China controls the processing of pretty much all the critical minerals, whether it's rare earth, lithium, cobalt or graphite,” Pini Althaus, the chief executive of USA Rare Earth, said in a telephone interview with VOA.

A little-known Chinese company that was founded in 2011 is now the world’s biggest maker of electric vehicle batteries.

For three consecutive years ending in 2019, South Korea's market tracker SNE Research has ranked China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) as No. 1 in the electric vehicle battery production, with a 27.9% market share. CATL makes electric-car batteries for Tesla.

CATL chairman Zeng Yuqun told Bloomberg last month that they have developed a power pack that lasts more than a million miles. Among their top customers are Daimler AG, BMW and Toyota.

Peterbilt Delivers 579EVS to Shippers Transport Express

Leader in battery-electric commercial vehicles Peterbilt Motors Company announced the delivery of ten Model 579EVs to Shippers Transport Express for immediate use as part of their drayage operations at the Port of Oakland. Five additional Model 579EVs are scheduled to be put into service as part of their Port of Long Beach drayage operations in November 2021.

Founded in 1993, Shippers Transport specializes in the movement of goods from ports to local distribution centers. Based out of Carson, California, Shippers Transport operates out of four ports up and down the West Coast of the United States.

The fully integrated, battery-electric 579EV in operation by Shippers Transport is optimized for drayage operations requiring two to three trips a day, of up to 50 miles in length before returning home at night to recharge. When used in conjunction with a recommended DC fast-charger, the state-of-the-art, high-energy density battery packs recharge in three to four hours.

The order with Shipper’s Transport Express is part of a $50 million grant obtained from the California Air Resources Board’s Zero and Near Zero Emission Freight Facility (ZANZEFF) program. ZANZEFF funds transform emissions reduction strategies at freight facilities throughout the state. The project is also part of California Climate Investments, a statewide initiative that puts billions of Cap-and-Trade dollars to work reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy and improving public health and the environment–particularly in disadvantaged communities.

Solaris to Supply 6 Electric Buses to Iberian Peninsula in Spain

Spanish towns and cities have been continuously investing in the development of their zero-emission fleets. Following the tender procedures, Solaris Bus & Coach will deliver another 6 electric buses including the charging infrastructure to the Iberian Peninsula. Two Urbino 8,9 LE electric buses will make their way to the town of Martorell in the Province of Barcelona. Another two Urbino 8,9 electric units and two 12-metre electric buses will roll onto the streets in the vicinity of Bilbao, in the Basque Country. Both contracts are to be completed by the end of 2022.

Solaris has received further orders for the supply of electric buses to Spain, namely to Catalonia and to the Basque Country. Following the execution of the contract concluded with the Town Hall of Martorell (Ayuntamiento de Martorell), two Urbino 8,9 LE electric buses will soon run on the roads in the Province of Barcelona. What is more, the town has ordered two mobile chargers of 40 kW each. The Basque Country transport operator, EuskoTren, has in turn opted for four Solaris electric buses, which will make their way to the Bilbao region. Two Urbino 8,9 LE electric units will be put into operation on the route to Usansolo, whereas two Urbino 12 electric buses will be deployed on the lines operated by BizkaiBus. EuskoTren has also decided to purchase an onboard charger of nearly 35 kW, and a 150 kW dual range charger of 150 kW that enables the concurrent charging of two buses. Both contracts are to be completed in 2022.

The Urbino 8,9 LE electric buses commissioned by the town of Martorell will feature Solaris High Power batteries adapted to frequent and fast charging and boasting a total capacity of 90 kWh. The Urbino electric buses will be designed for charging using a conventional plug-in connection and for fast charging via pantograph placed on the bus roof. A 160 kW central motor will ensure a smooth ride.

The Basque Country will receive electric buses fitted with Solaris High Energy batteries. The 12-metre vehicles will be equipped with batteries with a total capacity of 440 kWh, whereas in the shorter buses energy will be stored in batteries with a capacity of over 260 kWh. Both Urbino models will be charged using a plug-in system. The drive unit in the shorter buses will be a 160 kW central motor, whereas in the 12-metre vehicles it will be an electric axle with two integrated electric motors.

All vehicles to be supplied by Solaris to Spanish carriers will be fully air-conditioned. All buses will also be fitted with a comprehensive passenger information system with internal displays, as well as a CCTV system covering the bus interior and exterior to increase the travellers’ safety. What is more, passengers will be able to recharge their mobile devices using USB sockets located in the passenger compartment.

In addition, the vehicles ordered by EuskoTren will boast driver assistance systems for more safety. For example, the MirrorEye system, which replaces conventional side mirrors with cameras, will ensure improved visibility in bright sunlight as well as during rain or after nightfall. The Acoustic Vehicle Alert System (AVAS), generating warning signals will alert pedestrians to the presence of a vehicle with an electric drive. What is more, the carrier has opted for eSConnect, a software designed by Solaris that will provide for modern fleet management and the monitoring of vehicles cruising the routes in the Basque Country.

Unfortunately the Netherlands has never build a battery industry and so it is therefore very difficult to compete against the Asian countries who already have a big market share.

Developing a concept or demonstrator is a long way to go to industrialize the product and to make it ready for mass production. In these markets cost price is very dominant and that depends on the volumes. Small volumes means high cost price.

For companies who need small volumes they can go to third parties for their batteries and of course they have to pay a much higher cost price. For new comers in the battery market it is very difficult to gain market share and to compete against the Asian countries with their long history in battery technology.

Zoveel CO2-uitstoot komt er van een elektrische Polestar 2

Polestar wil inzichtelijk maken hoeveel CO2-uitstoot er toe te schrijven is aan de Polestar 2. Dat het merk zo open wil zijn, kondigde het een jaar geleden al aan. Nu is men klaar met analyseren en krijgen we de harde cijfers te zien.

Polestar baarde bijna een jaar geleden behoorlijk wat opzien met een - vrij vertaalde - pittige uitspraak: 'EV's zorgen ook voor veel CO2'. Nogal een bijzonder statement als je enkel elektrische auto's verkoopt en juist voor een belangrijk deel van je verkopen afhankelijk bent van mensen die nou net vanwege CO2-reductie elektrisch willen rijden. De openheid van Polestar verdient wat dat betreft een pluim. Het merk kondigde direct daarbij aan dat het zou gaan onderzoeken hoeveel CO2-uitstoot aan de Polestar 2 is toe te schrijven. Een beetje een gevalletje 'wij van WC-eend' wellicht, maar de resultaten liegen er niet om.

Polestar 2 CO2-uitstoot vergeleken met Volvo XC40 met benzinemotor

Polestar laat namelijk zien (zie staafdiagram hierboven) dat een Polestar 2 ook nog behoorlijk wat CO2-uitstoot veroorzaakt. De fabrikant vergelijkt de drie versies met een Volvo XC40 met benzinemotor. Duidelijk te zien is dat de Polestar vooral vanwege het productie- en recyclingproces nog voor aardig wat CO2-uitstoot verantwoordelijk is. Bij het gebruik van de auto is dat uiteraard een stuk minder, aangezien de Polestar zelf geen directe uitstoot veroorzaakt. Het is echter sterk afhankelijk van de energiemix van een land hoeveel CO2-uitstoot alsnog terug te voeren is op de auto. In alle gevallen zit de Polestar onder de XC40, al is een schone energieopwekking duidelijk van groot belang om het verschil groter te maken.

Er zitten twee kanten aan deze openheid van Polestar. Aan de ene kant wil het merk ermee laten zien dat zijn elektrische auto daadwerkelijk minder CO2-uitstoot veroorzaakt dan een verwant model met een benzinemotor. Dat is natuurlijk goede reclame voor de Polestar 2. Tegelijkertijd toont het aan dat een elektrische auto ook zeker niet zaligmakend is als het gaat om CO2-uitstoot.

Polestar-CEO Thomas Ingenlath verklaart dan ook: "Auto's elektrisch maken is geen einddoel, het is een begin." Hij pleit ervoor dat fabrikanten transparanter zijn over wat er aan CO2-uitstoot aan hun elektrische auto's te koppelen is. Consumenten zitten volgens Polestar hier op te wachten. Zo stelt Polestar: "Slechts één op de vier consumenten erop vertrouwt dat autofabrikanten transparant zijn en in het belang van de samenleving handelen. Daarnaast eist meer dan de helft van de consumenten meer transparantie en de mogelijkheid om de CO2-voetafdruk van auto's te vergelijken2. Het invoeren van een industriebrede standaard kan hierbij de sleutel zijn." De Zweden hopen met deze informatie over de Polestar 2 als voorbeeld voor zulke inzichtelijkheid te zorgen.

4 eCitaro for Hesse’s City of Science

It is not surprising that Darmstadt, as Hesse’s city of science wants to make its local public transport emission-free as soon as possible. Darmstadt has developed to become one of Germany’s top future-oriented cities. And in the process, the shrewd city development office is relying on a modern, environmentally friendly local public transportation service. HEAG mobilo, a transport operator in Darmstadt, is planning to replace almost its entire bus fleet with vehicles that are 100?percent electrically driven in the next four years. 27 August 2021, 24 fully-electric Mercedes-Benz city buses officially began operations. This marks the first huge step towards this goal.

The battery technology of the 24 eCitaro – eleven solo and 13 articulated buses – is based on the second-generation nickel manganese cobalt cells (NMC). The advantage here is that they are suitable for both depot and high-performance charging. All of the electric buses are fitted with all the very best safety equipment Daimler Buses has to offer. This includes Sideguard Assist which assists the driver when turning and the new Preventive Brake Assist which is the first active braking assistance system for city buses in the world. The driver cockpit also provides preventive protection: a driver’s cab with a large pane of safety glass protects the driver from viral infections and violence. The air in the bus is kept clean using active filters with an anti-viral function. Video monitoring is another safety system on-board. In the articulated buses six cameras monitor the bus interior while the solo vehicles are fitted with four cameras.

HEAG mobilo plans to have replaced the present fleet of around 80 vehicles with electrically operated vehicles by 2025. Today’s launch represents around 36?percent of those. In June 2020 HEAG mobilo began its electromobility campaign with five eCitaro. Once all the diesel buses have been replaced by their electrically driven counterparts, the transport company has calculated that it will save approximately 2.5 million litres of diesel fuel annually and thus avoid around 6,600 tonnes of CO2.
