RWE Builds Wind Turbines on Sea Dike Dam in Netherlands

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
09 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

The Oostpolderdijk Wind Farm in the Dutch province of Groningen will consist of three turbines. This is the first time that such a project has been undertaken. Due to limited space at the site of the dike a climbing crane is being used to install the top turbine components. So far, the foundations and the lowest turbine components of the wind turbines have already been built. One wind turbine has been fully completed, and the climbing crane has begun the further construction of the second wind turbine.

In recent years, RWE and Water Board Noorderzijlvest (the owner of the sea dike dam) have conducted meticulous research into the construction process and dike safety, as well as the impact of the project on the local environment. This has resulted in a highly specialized technical design which is now being implemented. The most important aspect of the design has been to guarantee the safety of the dike and its dam function. Wind Farm Oostpolderdijk, with a total installed capacity of 7.5 MW, is expected to be operational by the end of 2021.

In February, RWE concluded a power purchase agreement (PPA) with ASML, the world’s largest supplier of lithography systems for the semi-conductor industry, for the purchase of green power generated by Oostpolderdijk Wind Farm and other projects.

Sunfish Reburies Export Cable at Eneco’s Luchterduinen Wind Farm

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
10 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

For the offshore wind farm Luchterduinen in The Netherlands, Jan De Nul was requested by Eneco to rebury a section of an existing export cable. To this purpose, Jan De Nul modified its in-house designed and fabricated intertidal trencher Sunfish and successfully reburied the nearshore section of the cable to a minimum depth of 2.5 metres below the seabed. Due to morphological changes the export cable burial was over the last few years decreasing in depth within the nearshore section. To guarantee the cable will at all times remain sufficiently buried and thus protected, a reburial campaign was requested by Eneco.

Since the section of decreased burial depth was located in the nearshore zone, it was not accessible with typical offshore trenching vehicles nor could it be easily accessed from the beach. Jan De Nul offered Eneco the solution by mobilizing its intertidal trencher Sunfish. The Sunfish successfully lowered the nearshore part of the cable working up to 1 kilometre offshore and a water depth of 8.5 metres.

Specifically for this project, the Sunfish was modified to a suitable post-lay jet-trenching vehicle with 2 water pumps delivering each 1250 m³/hr jet water and 3.5 m long jet swords.

To accurately locate the cable, the Sunfish was further equipped with 2 sets of innovative cable tracker sensors of SMD’s innovative tracking system ‘Artemis’ using the live tone of the cable. As a result, Eneco did not have to switch off the wind farm during the entire campaign.

Enel Green Launches Wind turbines Made with Fabric

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
11 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

Enel Green Power has launched a partnership with the startup ACT Blade to develop a new type of innovative wind turbine made of fabric, capable of generating more energy, reducing costs and making it easier to recycle its component materials. If renewable sources are now fully competitive, it is thanks in part to materials science, which has made it possible to reduce production costs and improve the efficiency of wind and solar power plants. Through its Open Innovability model, Enel is focusing its attention on the continuous development of technological innovation, looking at innovative ideas wherever they may originate, inside or outside the Group, to then experiment with them and potentially put them into practice. In particular, we offer startups the opportunity to collaborate with us and benefit from our experience, expertise and resources in order to test and fine-tune their products in genuine use case scenarios and speed up their entry into the market.

An example of this approach is the agreement that Enel Green Power has signed with the Scottish startup ACT Blade, which specializes in the production of innovative wind turbines covered with a special technical fabric, based on the principles adopted for the sails used by boats competing in the America’s Cup.

This technology has great potential for the wind power industry as well, because it could bring significant benefits in both economic and environmental terms. First of all, the turbine blades are lighter because they have a slender supporting structure made of composite material that is completely covered with the technical fabric. The new blades with the same weight as conventional ones are longer and therefore ensure an increased production of electricity. In addition, the costs are lower thanks to other features, such as a structure that is composed of fewer materials in relation to its length, as well as modular production processes that are simpler and more streamlined, leading to expected savings of up to 17%.

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
11 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

Equinor has entered into an agreement with Eni to sell a 10% interest in the Dogger Bank Wind Farm C project in the UK. Equinor continues to capture value from the world class offshore wind asset obtaining an equity consideration of around GBP 70 million. Eni has also entered into an agreement to purchase a 10% interest in Dogger Bank C from project partner SSE Renewables on the same terms. Once the transaction is complete, the new overall shareholding in Dogger Bank C will be SSE Renewables (40%), Equinor (40%) and Eni (20%).

Eni will enter the asset effective from financial close of project financing which is expected before end of 2021. The farm down transaction is expected to close in 1Q 2022, subject to regulatory and lenders approvals and customary purchase price adjustments.

“With this offshore wind transaction, we continue to demonstrate value creation from Equinor’s renewables business. As with Dogger Bank A and B, the divestment in the Dogger Bank C project is in line with our strategy of accessing selective markets early and at scale, leveraging our offshore capabilities to mature and de-risk projects,” says Pål Eitrheim, executive vice president in Renewables in Equinor.

Equinor and SSE Renewables secured 3.6 GW of offshore wind contracts for Dogger Bank’s in the UK Government’s 2019 Contract for Difference auctions. The first two phases, Dogger Bank A and Dogger Bank B reached financial close at competitive terms in 2020, underlining the attractiveness of the UK offshore wind assets and the confidence in the joint venture.

Once completed Dogger Bank will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm. In total it will generate around 18 TWh annually, enough renewable electricity to supply 5% of the UK’s demand, equivalent to powering six million UK homes.

Extended partner alignment will enable further synergies across, both in the construction and operations phase of the Dogger Bank wind farm. SSE Renewables will continue to lead on the development and construction, and Equinor will operate the asset on completion.

Equinor to Launch GW Size Floating Wind Concept in Scotland

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
12 Nov, 2021, 5:30 am

Leading developer in floating offshore wind Equinor has designed a new floating wind concept that will enable industrial standardisation and maximise opportunities for local supply chains. Having reaffirmed its commitment to Scotland earlier this year, the offshore energy company has now revealed its preferred floating wind foundation design for full-scale gigawatt (GW) commercial floating offshore wind, if successful in ScotWind. The Wind Semi, a semisubmersible wind turbine foundation, has been designed with flexibility, specifically to allow for fabrication and assembly based on local supply chain capabilities. To ensure that the technology can be deployed cost effectively whilst maximising local benefits, Equinor has developed a set of design principles and solutions that are applicable across floating concepts.

Equinor installed the first ever floating offshore wind turbine in 2009, and operates Hywind Scotland (30 MW), the world’s first floating wind farm. Since it began production in 2017, Hywind Scotland has consistently achieved a higher capacity factor than other UK wind farms, demonstrating the true potential of floating offshore wind.

The Wind Semi has several features making it particularly suited for harsh waters, and solutions that can maximise the opportunities for the Scottish supply chain:

Increased dependability: By introducing a passive ballast system, the Wind Semi has a simple substructure design, reducing the risk of system failure and the amount of maintenance needed

Simpler, more robust design: A flat plate design that is free from bracings, heave plates and complicated nodes that are prone to fatigue cracking

Flexibility towards the supply chain: With a harbour draught of less than 10 m, the Wind Semi’s turbine integration can be assembled at most industrialised ports. The Wind Semi’s simpler flat plate design enables the substructure to be built in blocks that can either be fabricated locally and/or shipped from other locations.

Equinor will select the best suited floating wind concept for its projects. Water depths, conditions around shipyards and ports, and the specialisations and capacity of the local supply chain are primary drivers for selecting a given design.

Orsted A/S: Ørsted, Falck Renewables, BlueFloat Energy-consortium werken samen met Scottish Association for Marine Science om milieueffecten van drijvende wind te onderzoeken

cc: marketscreener
