UN experts recognize Moscow best metropolis in terms of quality of life
4 February 2022,
by Yulia Ivanko, Mos.ru

www.mos.ru/upload/newsfeed/pressevent...

This conclusion was reached by experts from UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Program for sustainable urban development.

Moscow has been name the best in the world in terms of infrastructure development and quality of life according to UN-Habitat's City Prosperity Index (CPI), as Sergei Sobyanin stated in his blog.

The short version of the relevant document was published by UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Program for sustainable urban development. The full text with a detailed description of the methodology and datasheet will be available on March 31.

Moscow performed strongly in healthcare, education, science and technology, culture and leisure, safety and public spaces. The experts also noted the well-developed housing, social, transport and ICT infrastructure in Moscow.

Moreover, according to a comprehensive assessment, Moscow is ranked third most prosperous megacity in the world, coming behind Singapore and Toronto. The top ten cities also include Sydney, London, Paris, Madrid, Shanghai, Hong Kong and New York.

For several years, experts from UN-Habitat and Centro EURE had been analyzing the performance of 54 largest cities in the world, with 29 megacities representing all continents being included in the final index. The experts compared them in the following dimensions: economic productivity, infrastructure development, quality of life, equality and social inclusion, environmental sustainability, administration and legislation. Balance among these indicators was also taken into account.

The index is intended to assess the progress of cities around the world with regard to the UN Sustainable Development Goals. These are 17 interconnected goals adopted by the UN General Assembly as the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They include ensuring good health and well-being, developing infrastructure, introducing innovation, providing quality education for all and many more.

The City Prosperity Index was first published in 2015 and then was halted until 2022. However, studies on the development of some cities based on its methodology were published for several years.

Apple Bows to Kremlin Demands For Local Office
Updated: one day ago

static.themoscowtimes.com/image/artic...

Apple has opened a representative office in Russia, the Roskomnadzor communications watchdog said Friday, becoming the first company to comply with the Kremlin's new rules requiring foreign technology firms to localize their operations in the country.

Under a new law, some 13 foreign technology companies are required to open local offices and fulfill a string of other technical requirements, like add a Russian-language feedback form to their website, or face hefty fines.

Critics see the law as part of Russia’s ongoing drive against big overseas technology companies, and it comes after years of mounting pressure on the likes of Apple, Google and Facebook.

Music streaming service Spotify also said it had also opened a representative office in Russia on Friday, but is yet to complete some of the law’s other technical requirements, the RBC business site reported.

Foreign IT companies have held offices in Russia for a number of years, but regulators frequently complained that they were sales, marketing or development hubs — not so-called representative offices with the authority to engage on legal or corporate issues.

The 13 companies — which include Facebook, Twitter, TikTok and Google — all have more than 500,000 Russian users a day.

Google, Viber and Likee said they intend to comply with the new rules, while several companies, including Facebook-owner Meta, TikTok and Telegram, are yet to publicly respond.

The Kremlin has increased its efforts to exert control over foreign technology companies in recent years.

Both Apple and Google last year removed mobile apps linked to jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny from their online stores on the day of nationwide elections after their Russian-based employees were reportedly threatened with jail time if the requests were denied.

Russia also sends some of the highest number of content deletion requests to social networks, transparency reports show. After years of issuing small fines to the companies if they didn’t remove posts or videos Russia said were illegal, last December Russian regulators slapped Facebook and Google with a record $125 million fine.

Russian Ruble Is World’s Most Undervalued Currency on Big Mac Index

static.themoscowtimes.com/image/artic...

The Russian currency should be worth 70% more against the U.S. dollar — 23 rubles per $1, rather than its current level of around 76.7 — British newspaper The Economist has calculated in its closely watched Big Mac Index.

The Big Mac Index compares the price of the famous McDonald’s burger across the world to calculate whether national currencies are undervalued or overvalued. After accounting for differences in living standards — measured by GDP per capita — the ruble comes out as the most undervalued of the 55 currencies tracked by The Economist, in a measurement dubbed “Burgernomics.”

“A Big Mac costs 135 rubles in Russia and $5.81 in the United States. The implied exchange rate is 23.2. The difference between this and the actual exchange rate, 77.4, suggests the Russian ruble is 70% undervalued,” The Economist said Wednesday, referencing the ruble’s market value earlier in the week.

The ruble has come out as “undervalued” against the dollar on the Index for the last decade.

Russia’s currency has seen a turbulent start to the year. Market volatility stoked by fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine sent the ruble to its lowest level in 14 months and forced the country’s Central Bank to halt its usual foreign currency purchases in a bid to stop the slide.

Among the world’s other most undervalued currencies on the Big Mac index are also the Turkish lira, which is undervalued by 67.9%, the Indonesian rupiah and the Malaysian ringgit — undervalued by 59.3%, and by 58.9% respectively. The Economist ranked the Swiss franc and the Norwegian krone as the world’s most overvalued currencies.

Old Friends: St. Petersburg's Oldest Residents Come Home to Their Past
Photographs of residents greet travelers to St. Petersburg.

static.themoscowtimes.com/image/artic...

“Long Time, No See” is the very apt title of an unusual photography exhibition at the Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg. The project, curated by the Dobrodely charitable foundation, brings together 45 photographs that show St. Petersburg through the stories of some of its oldest residents. The project’s participants revisit their favorite places in the city — places they had not seen for the months of the coronavirus pandemic, or even longer.

All the images were taken by the photographer Olga Proskurina, who conceived the project as more than just a chance to see St. Petersburg through the eyes of some of its oldest citizens. It is call to reconnect with the people we love before it is too late.

static.themoscowtimes.com/image/1360/...

Better together
Alexander Korolyov and his wife Serafima have been together for 70 years and are now in their 90s.

Their favorite place in St. Petersburg has always been St. Isaac's Square and the Moika embankment. The Korolyovs were photographed in the small garden at the very center of the square in front of St. Isaac’s Cathedral. For Serafima, who is a native of St. Petersburg (unlike her husband, originally a Muscovite) this area is also connected with her precious childhood memories: Her mother worked as a cleaner in the Mariinsky Palace, which is now home to the city’s Legislative Assembly.

When Serafima was born, her mother was issued an apartment right where she was working at the time — at the palace! Mother and daughter stayed in their flat at the palace until 1942, when the building was given to the City Executive Committee. Serafima and Alexander met in Leningrad, where he found himself during the war. In 1944 he served at the legendary Yermak icebreaker.

The couple said their key to a happy family is very simple: “All it takes is to listen to each other and forgive small wrongs.”

static.themoscowtimes.com/image/1360/...

Salvation in art
Valentina Gavrilova, age 98, reconnected with her past in a three-hour visit to the State Hermitage Museum, which holds a very special place in her heart. Born in the town Pyatigorsk, Valentina had just finished high school when the war broke out. Along with many other girls she entered nursing school and eventually found herself in Leningrad. After the war she worked in a pharmacy near the Hermitage, escaping from work at every opportunity to have a look at the magnificent halls of the museum. It is no wonder that the three hours at the museum flew by and brought a wealth of joy and inspiration, rather than any fatigue.

Valentina Gavrilova’s love for the arts and the beautiful things in life is inspiring. She recites the poetry of Alexander Blok and Marina Tsvetayeva by heart — at age 98! — and tends the flowers in a garden near her house. “I wish everyone happiness,” she wrote in a note to the audience of the exhibition. “Get involved, love people, help them, do not pass by [when you see someone in need]— and all will be well with you.”

static.themoscowtimes.com/image/1360/...

From sorrow to success
The Siege of Leningrad took a terrible toll of Yuri Klyaus’ family; he was left an orphan in 1941 when he was a little boy. He was rescued by his neighbor, who arranged for him to work at a factory where he received bread in return for work. In 1942 the boy was evacuated from Leningrad to an orphanage near Ryazan. After the war Yuri returned to Leningrad and lived in orphanage on Zhdanovskaya Street. Olga Proskurina arranged a photo session of Yuri outside the orphanage. One of Yuri’s dearest post-war memories is the founding of the Primorsky Victory Park, in which he took a part. “I was studying in a college back then. Today the school’s building is a hotel, but I found my windows," he said.

Despite his tough start in life, Yuri went on to become an awarding-winning power engineer.
static.themoscowtimes.com/image/1360/...

The idea of the project came up in 2020, when Russia, like many other countries affected by the pandemic, when into quarantine. “Everyone was stuck at home, especially the elderly, who didn’t go to their favorite park in the center of the city that often even before coronavirus struck," Polina Tumashik, director of the Dobrodely Charitable Foundation, told The Moscow Times. “We started shooting our first portraits in September 2020. Starting at the end of January 2022, passengers traveling through Pulkovo airport will be able to see their stories, captured in photos of their most recent encounters with their beloved city.”

The exhibition will run until March 25.

Team ROC in 7th place of medal standings after Day 1 of 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing

phototass3.cdnvideo.ru/width/1020_b92...

BEIJING, February 5. /TASS/. The Russian national team of athletes finished in the 7th place of the overall medal standings after Day 1 of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in the Chinese capital of Beijing.

With six sets of medals at the stake on the opening day of the Olympics in China, the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Team won one silver and one bronze medals on Saturday.

The silver was coined by Russia’s Natalya Nepryaeva in women’s cross-country 15-km skiathlon event. Norway’s Therese Johaug won the race and Austria’s Teresa Stadlober took the bronze in the race.

The bronze for Team ROC on Saturday was brought in the Biathlon Mixed Relay 4x6km race by the squad of Ulyana Nigmatullina, Kristina Reztsova, Alexander Loginov and Eduard Latypov. The gold went to biathletes from Norway and the silver was packed by France.

Team ROC is currently in the 7th place, sharing it with Canada (one silver, one bronze) in the overall medals count following Norway in the top place with two golds, Slovenia 2nd (one gold, one bronze), China 3rd (one gold), the Netherlands 3rd (one gold), Sweden 3rd (one gold), Italy 6th (two silver medals).

A total of seven sets of medals will be at the stake on Day 2 (February 6) of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, which kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony on February 4 at the Bird’s Nest Stadium in the Chinese capital.

The 2022 Winter Olympic Games in the Chinese capital of Beijing are held between February 4 and 20. During the 128th IOC session in Kuala Lumpur on July 31, 2015, Beijing was chosen to host the 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games making the Chinese capital the first city ever to host both the Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games (in 2008) as well as the Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (in 2022).

Russian athletes at Beijing-2022
Due to international sanctions against Russian sports, athletes from Russia are competing in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing under the flag and logo of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) instead of the Russian national flag and state emblem.

The national anthem of Russia is also under sanctions at the Olympics in China. The First Piano Concerto by Pyotr Tchaikovsky was selected to be played at awarding ceremonies for Russian Olympians in Beijing.

Luninets Airbase, Wit Rusland is mentioned as a location for Su-25SM deployment.

It is also a site with recently added S-400 & Pantsir-S deployments.

Recent evidence indicates the base keeps the runway free of snow.

Russia, China continue work on long-range jet — Kremlin

The airplane will have 280 seats and a flight range of 12,000 km in the base version

MOSCOW, February 4. /TASS/. The coronavirus pandemic created problems for the aircraft industry but Russia and China continue their project for the creation of a wide-body long-range jet, press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday.

The Kremlin’s spokesman highlighted aircraft engineering when listing topics discussed during summit talks in Beijing. "The aircraft industry is the powerhouse of industrial cooperation," Peskov said. "This comprises helicopters and the wide-body long-range passenger jet CR-929," he noted.

"Progress is slower than we would like" in the airliner development project, the Kremlin’s spokesperson said. "The market fell victim to COVID in the case with long-range airplanes; the demand for such aircraft dropped but work continues nevertheless," Peskov said.

Russia and China have been involved in the wide-body long-range aircraft projects for several years. The airplane will have 280 seats and a flight range of 12,000 km in the base version. The total budget for the program was estimated at about $13 bln.

IJsberen betrekken voormalig onderzoeksstation in Rusland

www.weer.nl/media/4eJj76eOiAx3GFXP0gb...
