Trump Could Still Start a Last-Ditch War With Iran

A final grand distraction before the president is forced to relinquish his office is a real danger that deserves serious attention.

Donald Trump is intent on creating as much chaos as possible on his way out of the White House. Could that include saddling Joe Biden with another war in the Middle East?

We already know that Trump is thinking about attacking Iran. In mid-November, after he lost the presidential election, Trump asked for military options against Iranian nuclear facilities, a reckless idea that was derailed by top aides. Since then, the United States has sent B-52 bombers on missions in the Persian Gulf three times, including a 30-hour round trip from North Dakota to the Gulf on December 29.

B-52 flights are a traditional American method of demonstrating resolve, a way to signal to an enemy that the United States is engaged and alert for trouble. (Whether such flights do any good is questionable, but American administrations of both parties use them.) These recent bomber missions are ostensibly an effort to deter Iran from carrying out attacks on U.S. or allied forces as the anniversary of the Iranian terror chieftain Qasem Soleimani’s killing approaches on January 3.

Iran is almost certainly planning retaliation for Soleimani’s death, and both Trump and Biden have a duty to be vigilant about possible revenge, a real danger that deserves serious attention. Even if Iran forgoes action before January, the regime in Tehran is an ongoing threat to peace and stability in the region, a problem that Trump did not invent and that Biden will inherit.

Geen vrijlating op borgtocht dus omdat de rechter de kans groot acht dat zij het land zal ontvluchten, met name omdat zij een inwoner registratie in een land heeft dat geen uitlever verdrag heeft met de US.
Bovendien zijn de door de aanklager aangevoerde bewijslast ernstig genoeg voor een lange gevangenis straf.

Misschien dat President Donald John Trump haar nog een Presidentieel Pardon wil verlenen.
Na 6 januari wanneer Vice President Mike Pence zal voorlezen dat Joe Biden officiel President Elect is, zal Trump wel ontploffen.
Er resteren dan nog 2 weken tot 20 januari, de inauguratie van Biden.
En Trump zal zijn Presidentschap en zijn Trump Live Reality Show als President afsluiten met een slot apotheose, zoals een Live Reality Show betaamt.

Misschien wel een spectaculair aantal Presidentiele Pardons alsof het de Oscar Awards zijn.

Misschien wel interessant om te weten dat op 6 januari 2017 Democraten bezwaren maakten tegen de verkiezing van Trump.
Joe Biden, toenmalig Vice President Mike Pence hoorde de bezwaren aan en keurde ze af omdat er geen ondertekening was.

Het issue is deze keer anders. De wet schrijft voor dat het Congres de uitgebrachte Electoral Votes telt en certificeert op 6 januari. De Republikeinen hebben nu een manier bedacht om die wettelijke 6 januari niet te halen.

Het gaat ze niet om het uitwisselen van een meningsverschil. Het gaat ze om pure obstructie om te voorkomen dat er op 6 januari een nieuwe President wordt aangewezen die op 20 januari ingehuldigd mag worden.

Daar gaat het om. 72 x 5 minuten spreektijd , verdeeld over bezwaren op de kiesresultaten van 6 Staten waar Joe Biden heeft gewonnen. De spreektijd, samen met de tijd die nodig is om te stemmen op ieder item, zorgt er voor dat de 6e januari voorbij gaat zonder een bekrachtiging van de kiesresultaten.

Daarmee wordt de wettelijke termijn niet gehaald. Uiteindelijk zal het wel goed komen, maar dit is geen procedure-dingetje. Dit is pure obstructie van de wet.

In the President's daily public schedule for Thursday, the White House stated the President and first lady Melania Trump will leave Florida at 11 a.m. ET to return to the White House.

Over the course of his stay in Florida, Trump has been single-mindedly focused on the election results and the upcoming certification process in Congress, set for January 6. After losing dozens of court cases and having his appeal rejected by the Supreme Court, Trump has viewed the January 6 event as his best opportunity to overturn the election he lost.

He has been in an irritated mood during most of the trip and fumed about everything from the election outcome to first lady Melania Trump's renovations to his private quarters, according to multiple people who spoke with him.

At one point, Trump also said he was concerned Iran could retaliate in the coming days for the US drone strike that killed Iran's top general, Qasem Soleimani, one year ago. A person speculated that could be a contributing factor in his early departure. Trump was at Mar-a-Lago when he ordered the Soleimani strike on January 3, 2020.

Before leaving for Palm Beach, he learned of Vice President Mike Pence's role in the certification proceedings on Capitol Hill, which is mostly ceremonial. As he was flying to Florida for his vacation, Trump retweeted a call from one of his supporters for Pence to refuse to ratify the Electoral College count on January 6.

While in Florida, Trump has repeatedly raised the January 6 date with members of Congress and other associates, according to people familiar with the conversations. He lobbied senators on whether they would go along with House conservatives in objecting to the results.

Sen. Josh Hawley, a Missouri Republican, became the first senator to say Wednesday that he would object, which will delay -- but not change -- the results for the Election College count.

Trump has also tweeted to his supporters that he'll see them in Washington on that date, a reference to large protests that are planned in the capital.

In Florida, Trump has been surrounded by people who mostly back his futile election efforts, including his personal attorney Rudy Giuliani and his son Donald Trump Jr. and his girlfriend Kimberly Guilfoyle. Even as he publicly fights the results, one question he's repeatedly polled people about is whether he should attend Biden's inauguration.

Trump has told people recently that Pence isn't doing enough to fight for him as his presidency ends, and has recently taken an interest in Pence's traditional role during the certification. As president of the Senate, Pence presides over the proceedings.

Sources say Trump, before his vacation, brought the matter up to the vice president and has been "confused" as to why Pence can't overturn the results of the election on January 6. Pence and White House aides have tried to explain to him that his role is more of a formality and he cannot unilaterally reject the Electoral College votes.

Pence had once planned to depart on foreign travel shortly after the January 6 certification. But plans for a trip to the Middle East and Europe have now been put on hold, people familiar with the matter said.

Pence spent the Christmas holiday on vacation in Vail, Colorado.

DOJ announced it filed two civil forfeiture complaints on Thursday: one for an office park in Dallas, and the other for an office tower in Louisville.

The Justice Department has moved to seize property from a powerful Ukrainian oligarch, according to court filings released Thursday. That oligarch, Igor Kolomoisky , has long been seen as allied with Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelensky. Both men were important characters in the saga that led to President Donald Trump’s impeachment.

The department filed two civil forfeiture complaints on Thursday: one for an office park in Dallas, and the other for an office tower in Louisville, Ky. The department estimates the properties together are worth $70 million.

The complaints allege that Kolomoisky and Gennadiy Bogolyubov, his longtime business partner, embezzled and defrauded billions of dollars from a Ukrainian bank they owned, PrivatBank. The Ukrainian government seized control of the bank in 2016, and the top regulator who led that move subsequently faced a long series of death threats.

As part of efforts by Rudy Giuliani to push Ukraine’s president to find dirt on Vice President Joe Biden, two then-allies of the former New York Mayor met with Kolomoisky in Tel Aviv in April 2019. Kolomoisky told a Ukrainian media outlet that the two men, Igor Fruman and Lev Parnas, wanted him to connect Giuliani with Zelensky. Kolomoisky called them “two clowns” and predicted the episode would end in scandal.

The court filings do not charge Kolomoisky and Bogolyubov with any crimes. But the documents allege they stole billions of dollars from the bank, forcing the Ukrainian government to bail it out to stave off an economic crisis.

They also paint a picture of an aggressive and sometimes-dangerous magnate.

“Kolomoisky in particular was known for ruthlessness and even violence that inspired loyalty — while he was governor of Dnipropetrovsk province, he was known to have paid armed goons to take over the offices of a state-owned oil company,” the Dallas filing said. “The employees of the bank understood that management’s instructions were Kolomoisky and Boholiubov’s orders, and orders were followed.”

The two men allegedly used misappropriated funds to buy a number of properties in the U.S., including a steel plant in Kentucky, a commercial high rise in Cleveland and a Motorola manufacturing plant in Illinois, according to the documents. DOJ cited a number of Ukrainian laws that Kolomosiky and Bogolyubov allegedly broke.

Georgia runoff election: What are the latest polls and odds?

Candidates are extremely close in the polls, but bookmakers favour Republicans

With just a week left until election day in the Georgia Senate runoff, polls are tight in the two races that will decide which party controls the upper chamber of Congress during the first years of the Biden administration.

As no candidate attained 50 per cent of the vote on 3 November, both races are being run again on 5 January.

Incumbent Republican Senator David Perdue is running for re-election against Democrat Jon Ossoff in a regularly scheduled election.

Republican Senator Kelly Loeffler, who was appointed to her seat by Governor Brian Kemp after Senator Johnny Isakson resigned, is facing off against Democrat Reverend Raphael Warnock in a special election.

While this would tie the parties, it is a tie that could be broken by Vice President-elect Kamala Harris who would cast a deciding vote on any legislation in her role as President of the Senate after 20 January’s inauguration.

Both races are incredibly close with FiveThirtyEight putting Mr Perdue at 47.5 per cent to Mr Ossoff’s 48.5 per cent, and Mr Warnock at 49.2 per cent to Ms Loeffler’s 47.3 per cent in its polling averages as of 31 December.

The RealClearPolitics polling average puts Mr Ossoff ahead on 49.3 per cent to Mr Perdue’s 48.5 per cent, and has Reverend Warnock ahead by 1.8 points on 49.8 per cent, to Ms Loeffler’s 48 per cent as of 30 December.

Such tight margins mean that turnout is going to be vital, and Georgians know it, with 2.34 million having already voted by 28 December — more than the total in any previous runoff election. There are still seven days of voting to go.

In the presidential election on 3 November, Joe Biden beat Donald Trump by 2,473,633 votes to 2,461,854, a margin of just under 12,000. It is the first time a Democrat has won Georgia since 1992.

There are worries within the Republican Party that the president’s constant unfounded talk of electoral fraud and rigged ballots may discourage some of his supporters from participating. Both GOP candidates and their surrogates are therefore working hard to get out the vote to counter this possibility.

Democrats meanwhile are hammering home the message to their supporters that the success of the incoming Biden presidency may hinge on being able to pass legislation quickly and cleanly through both chambers of Congress — making these Senate races vitally important.

Doet daarvoor zijn werk in de Senaat.
Geld ophalen doet hij met zijn campagne om advertenties en andere kosten te bekostigen voor het voeren van campagne.

Republikein Josh Hawley heeft geen campagne en dus ook geen additioneel geld nodig.

Hij kondigt aan bezwaar te maken op 6 januari bij de Electoral Votes telling.

Dit doet hij, terwijl Mitch McConnell telefonisch de Republikeinse Senatoren had benaderd om geen actie te ondernemen, bij het bekend maken van de Electoral Votes.

Tot zover alles prima.

Maar waarom gaat hij dan geld vragen aan de Amerikaanse MAGA republikeinen ?

er zijn twee mogelijkheden :

Misschien heeft hij wel hard geld nodig, om een advocaat te kunnen betalen.
20 Januari komt de nieuwe Attorney General en die zal corruptie en andere overtredingen mogelijk hard aanpakken.
Wat deze Josh Hawley op zijn kerfstok heeft, is niet bekend, maar hij zal het zelf wel weten.

Aan de andere kant heeft Josh Hawley ambities om een gooi te doen naar het Presidentschap van 2024, wanneer Trump besluit er niet voor te gaan. Door deze actie paait hij Donald Trump en Hawley verhoogt zijn kans, dat Trump hem dan steunt, door nu Trump te steunen op 6 januari.
