CEIP Scarl & d'Italia Ink Hydrogen DRI Development MoU in Italy

At the headquarters of the Federacciai trade association, Consorzio Elettrosiderurgici Italiani per il Preridotto and of DRI d'Italia have signed a framework agreement aimed at the green transition of the Italian steel sector and the achievement of the European objectives for the reduction of climate-changing emissions by verifying the opportunities for cooperation relating to the construction of production, marketing and sales plants of direct reduced iron.

The collaboration agreement provides that DRI d'Italia, the company controlled by Invitalia, is entrusted with the task and the related economic resources to build direct reduced iron plants, powered by hydrogen, in order to support the Decarbonisation process of the Italian iron and steel sector. Once in production, DRI d'Italia will be made available to the members of CEIP, a consortium promoted by Federacciai and made up of Italian steel producers who use arc furnaces

The agreement also contemplates cooperation aimed at identifying innovative technological solutions for the production and transformation of ferrous material to be used in the iron and steel industry.

JSW Steel, ArcelorMittal & NLMK Eying Liberty Liege’s Plants

Paper Jam reported that 3 steelmakers are analyzing the possibility of buying Liberty Steel's sites in Liège in Belgium while activity at the Dudelange plant is still at a standstill. The report said “JSW Steel, ArcelorMittal and NLMK are said to be analyzing the possibility of taking over the activities of Liberty Liège’s Flémalle & Tilleur plants.”

Regarding the recovery of steel sites, little information has filtered. According to L'Écho, only JSW has officially applied to acquire. ArcelorMittal has not yet commented on the case. The operation promises to be complex all the same in terms of competition on the European markets.

Placed under judicial reorganization procedure by the courts for more than a month, Liberty Liège still employs 550 people on the banks of the Meuse and the Belgian authorities are doing everything possible to avoid its bankruptcy.

According to the newspaper L'Écho, the Walloon Region is considering granting a loan of EUR 7 million to the steelmaker in order to avoid a lack of liquidity, which would lead to bankruptcy and the immediate end of the judicial reorganization. This loan should also be covered fairly quickly by the sale of a building to the Prayon group, a specialist in the field of phosphate chemistry, looking for an office in the same area in order to consolidate its activities. Estimated amount of the operation is EUR 8.5 million.

Liberty Steel’s Belgium-based assets include a series of lines for packaging steel located in Tilleur and two hot-dip galvanising lines located in Flemalle. The units can produce up to 1 million tonnes per year of hot-dip galvanized coil and 200,000 tonnes per year of packaging products. They were acquired by Liberty from ArcelorMittal in 2019.

Liberty Steel also controls HDG capacity in neighboring Luxembourg. These lines, located in Dudelange, remain temporary idled but are not officially for sale.

JSW Steel Coated Products to Acquire Stake in Kitchen Maker Ayena

JSW Steel announced that its subsidiary JSW Steel Coated Products has entered into a shareholders agreement and a share subscription agreement with Ayena Innovation Private Limited and its shareholders. Ayena is a start-up registered by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade and will be in the business of development, manufacturing and sales of quick-to-install modular solutions including modular kitchens.

Post-closing of the transaction, JSW Steel Coated Products will have 31% equity shareholding in Ayena.

JSW Steel said “The proposed investment is in line with endeavors of JSW Steel Coated Products to explore new avenues to increase consumption of coated steel products. It will enable JSW Steel Coated Products to further diversify its customer portfolio mix and enhance its presence in the retail business.”

Tata Steel Breaks Ground for EAF Steel Plant in Ludhiana

Punjab News Express has reported that the work on setting up of scrap based steel plant by Tata Steel at a cost of INR 2600 crore kicked off on 24 January 2023 in Ludhiana I Punjab. Tata Steel has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 26 August 2022 with the Government of Punjab for setting up a 750,000 tonnes long products steel plant with a scrap-based electric arc furnace at Kadiana Khurd in Hitech Valley in Ludhiana.

The plant will be spread over 115 acres of land adjacent to the state-of-the art Industrial Park developed by Punjab Small Industries & Export Corporation.

The EAF-based steel plant would produce construction grade steel rebar under the Company’s flagship retail brand Tata Tiscon, which would enable Tata Steel to further augment its market presence in the construction segment.

In August 2021, Tata Steel commissioned its first Steel Recycling Plant of 500,000 tonnes per annum capacity at Rohtak in Haryana.

Nippon Steel to CCSU Tie Up with Exxon Mobil & Mitsubishi – Report

Nikkei has reported Japan’s largest steelmaker Nippon Steel is considering capturing carbon dioxide emissions from its steel plants for underground storage at facilities linked to Exxon Mobil in countries including Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia. Nikkei has learned that “Nippon Steel, Exxon Mobil's Singapore unit and Japanese trading house Mitsubishi will sign a memorandum of understanding to start discussions on the project. Mitsubishi, which connected Nippon Steel and Exxon, would handle transportation, such as by shipping liquefied CO2 to depleted gas fields and other storage sites using specialized vessels.”

Details such as the project's start date and capacity need to be ironed out.

Nippon Steel aims to cut its CO2 emissions 30% by 2030 from 2013 levels and achieve carbon neutrality in 2050. It is switching to electric arc furnaces, which produce one-quarter of the emissions of blast furnaces, as part of this goal. One of them began commercial operations in October at the steelmaker's Setouchi Works. The company also is working on new hydrogen-based steelmaking technologies. It will test an iron direct reduction process using hydrogen starting in fiscal 2025.

Exxon has increased investment in the field in recent years. It can now capture and store 9 million tonnes of carbon a year, accounting for one-fifth of the global capacity. Exxon is slated to bring a new carbon capture and storage facility online in southeastern Australia during 2025, adding up to 2 million tonnes to its annual capacity. It is partnering with local energy companies in Malaysia and Indonesia to explore opportunities in those countries as well.

Mexican President Suggests Mr Ancira to Sell His Shares in Ahmsa

Bnamericas has reported that Mexico’s President Mr Andrés Manuel López Obrador has suggested that Mexican steelmaker Ahmsa’s Chairman Mr Alonso Ancira sell his shares in the steelmaker to local investors and present a debt payment plan in exchange for government support to overcome the company’s financial crisis. Mr López Obrador told “If Mr [Ancira] decides to sell his shares, hand over his shares in exchange for the debts he has, if he makes such an approach to us and responsible Mexican businessmen want to participate, of course we will help to maintain the company and strengthen it, because it is producing very little and getting worse all the time.”

However, the president reiterated that government funds would not be used to rescue the Monclova-based steel company that has debts with entities such as state oil company Pemex and public power utility CFE, which have led to power outages affecting operations.

Mr López Obrador added that “Ahmsa has a great future, because the demand for steel is going to grow. If Mr Alonso Ancira had made a decision two years ago, the company would already have gotten ahead, just taking advantage of the times of good steel prices.”

Ahmsa's media communications coordinator Mr Francisco Orduña told BNamericas “There is a negotiation process underway with investors. For confidentiality reasons, it’s not possible to say more.”

Altos Hornos de Mexico is the largest integrated steel plant in Mexico. It has corporate offices in Monclova, Coahuila, in the center of the Mexican state of Coahuila, 155 miles from the United States border. Throughout the decade of the '70s and after several expansions, the company achieved production of 3.75 million tonnes per year.

Magaya to 3D Print Bio Plastic from Apple Residue for Solar Power

Spain’s leading supplier of advanced steel structure solutions for solar power installation Gonvarri Metal Structures GMS R&D is participating in the MAGAYA project, whose objective is the revaluation of apple waste from the production of natural Asturian cider, by transforming it into a biopolymer that can be used in a new additive manufacturing process. In this way, it is hoped to obtain a biodegradable material that can be used for 3D printing of parts that can replace the current non-structural plastic parts in the future, being one of the R&D activities oriented towards sustainability and reduction of the carbon footprint.

MAGAYA is a collaborative project led by the advanced manufacturing cluster MetaIndustry4 and funded by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism, through the call for Innovative Business Clusters 2022b, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

In this interCluster innovation and R&D project, 7 organizations collaborate: the Toy Valley Cluster CEIV, the AIMPLAS Plastic Technology Institute, Prime Biopolymers, Venvirotech Biotechnology, GONVARRI MS R&D, Triditive and MI4 as coordinator. Both Clusters, CEIV and MI4, will be in charge of giving visibility to the project at a regional and national level through a campaign of dissemination and transfer of results, as well as working on the identification of new applications and use cases for the material and applied technology.

MAGAYA is a project financed by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, through the Call for Innovative Business Groups of the year 2022b, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

Primetals Tests Lifecycle Services Platform at Gerdau Ouro Branco

Primetals Technologies has recently completed a pilot project together with Brazilian steel producer Gerdau. The pilot project was executed at Gerdau’s plant in Ouro Branco in Brazil, together with Gerdau’s local maintenance team. Focused on Gerdau’s slab caster, the project gave the steel producer the opportunity to access technical information about its spare parts, and creates service requests online via m.space.

m.space is a comprehensive digital platform that offers an easy and fast way for steel producers to connect with the right experts at Primetals Technologies when having any kind of service-related request or question. The inquiry could be related to spare parts, plant documentation, and remote live support for mechanical as well as electrics and automation issues.

The requests were, for example, about remote inspection of caster rolls, analysis of the data generated by the ladle turret’s condition monitoring system, or automation support for Primetals Technologies’ technological packages such as Dynawidth, Dynaflex, the ASTC system, and Strand Checker.

The requests were technology-specific and required a high level of expertise. In addition to solving the requests, Primetals Technologies provided Gerdau with additional insights thanks to its expertise in the wider maintenance area and via the use of historical troubleshooting data from m.space.

Traditionally, maintenance issues often needed to be addressed by a field service engineer on-site. However, recent technology developments make it possible for Primetals Technologies’ experts to digitally assist steel producers. In that way, maintenance issues are solved faster and at lower cost as there is no accumulation of travel expenses.

USITC Votes for No AD Duty on Steel Nails from 3 Countries

The United States International Trade Commission has determined that US industry is not materially injured or threatened with material injury by reason of imports of steel nails from India, Thailand and Turkey that the US Department of Commerce has determined are sold in the United States at less than fair value. As a result of the Commission’s negative determinations, Commerce will not issue antidumping duty orders on imports of this product from India, Thailand and Turkey.

The merchandise covered by these investigations is certain steel nails having a nominal shaft or shank length not exceeding 12 inches. Certain steel nails include, but are not limited to, nails made from round wire and nails that are cut from flat-rolled steel or long-rolled flat steel bars. Certain steel nails may be of one-piece construction or constructed of two or more pieces. Examples of nails constructed of two or more pieces include, but are not limited to, anchors comprised of an anchor body made of zinc or nylon and a steel pin or a steel nail; crimp drive anchors; split-drive anchors; and strike pin anchors. Also included in the scope are anchors of one-piece construction.

US DOC Rescinds AD Duty on CTL Plates from Dillinger

The US Department of Commerce is rescinding the administrative review of the antidumping duty order on certain carbon and alloy steel cut-to-length plate from Germany, covering the period of review of 1 May 2021, to 30 April 2022. On 28 December2022, Commerce found that the information Dillinger provided demonstrated that it had no US sales of subject merchandise during the POR; therefore, Commerce notified interested parties of its intent to rescind the review of Dillinger because the company did not have a reviewable, suspended entry of subject merchandise during the POR

On 2 May 2022, Commerce published in the Federal Register a notice of opportunity to request an administrative renew of the antidumping duty order on CTL plate from Germany, Cleveland-Cliffs Steel, Nucor Corporation and SSAB Enterprises timely requested that Commerce conduct an administrative review. On 14 July 2022, Commerce published in the Federal Register a notice of initiation of an administrative review with respect to Dillinger Hüttenwerke. On 19 July 2022, Dillinger filed a no-shipments certification, stating that it did not have any exports, sales, or entries of CTL plate for consumption in the United States during the POR.

Celsa Nervacero Using Russula’s Mill Pulse to Improve Production

Mill Pulse, the industrial management software designed by Russula with leading technology to improve the steel mill’s efficiency and production management is now up and running at Celsa Nervacero's plant in Vizcaya in Spain. Celsa Nervacero is currently running the Production Management and Scheduling and Delays Tracking modules. In the coming months, the implementation of Mill Pulse will continue with the Roll Shop, Mill Setup, Maintenance and Quality modules. This extension will allow, in a single tool, the management and planning of the workshop activities (internal and external), the organization of product changes, preventive maintenance and automatic data acquisition from the plant quality area equipment.

The tool has been adapted to the customer’s needs, which now has a single suite for production management and downtime control. Mill Pulse allows complete traceability of the plant's production, from the raw material and rolling process to the labeling of the finished product. The system was implemented to manage the manufacturing of the plant's different product ranges (spoolers and bars). In addition, Mill Pulse® provides daily and customized reports that allow better decision making and optimize production and work efficiency.

Russula's Mill Pulse is already implemented in two other Celsa Group plants: Celsa Atlantic in Laracha in Spain and Celsa France Bouucau-Tarnos. In addition, Russula's MES system is currently under development at Gerdau's plant in Charqueadas and at Liberty wire and rod mill in Peoria.

British Steel to Upgrade Special Profiles Capabilities

A new milling machine at the heart of a GBP 26 million upgrade to British Steel’s Special Profiles business is under construction. The travelling-column machining center is currently being built in Germany by SHW Werkzeugmaschinen and will be delivered to British Steel’s Skinningrove site this year. The Uniforce 4000 five-axis machine will be situated in the company’s new forklift mast service centre which is currently under construction. It will be set up as a turnkey installation by Kingsbury, the machine manufacturer's sole agent in the UK, Ireland and GCC, and be able to hold extremely tight tolerance on special rolled steel profiles produced in the mill.

The combination of size and accuracy will set the company's machining capability apart from that of all other global players. The new service center here will incorporate one of the finest large-capacity machine shops in the world, turning British Steel into the number one manufacturer globally of value-added machined Special Profiles, rolled to precise customer requirements. The first target market will be masts for forklift trucks, especially high-reach models. However, the milling machine will have the capability to enhance our offering across all sectors.

Also included in the GBP 26 million investments are the purchase of four new CNC lathes for turning mill rolls, three band sawing cells for cutting stock to length, a laser measurement system for process control of every bar rolled, and a warehousing system for storing and retrieving raw and processed material. Previous significant investments involved the installation of an advanced surface descaling system and robotic identification tracking of each profile manufactured.

It is predicted that the new processing facility will add a further 30,000 tonnes of output within the next two years. It will thereafter see a further substantial increase when material handling in the new plant becomes fully automated.

Argentinian Crude Steel Production Up 4.5% in 2022

Argentina’s steel association Acero Argentino has announced that crude steel production increased by 4.5% YoY to 5.093 million tonnes. Acero Argentino said “Driven by demand from sectors such as construction, the automotive industry, energy and agricultural machinery, the production of crude steel had an increase of 4.5% compared to 2021.

In the construction sector, the year ended with an increase compared to 2021. Following cement shipments, there was an increase of 7% compared to the previous year.

In the automotive sector, the year also ended with a 23.5% increase in production compared to 2021.

Manufacturers of agricultural machinery and implements continue to meet commitments made until the first quarter of 2023, but there is great uncertainty about the evolution of new operations due to the drought that is affecting future harvest prospects.

In the mass consumption market, shipments to household appliance manufacturers begin to show signs of slowing down and those of cans and aerosol containers remain at the same level, without increases or falls.

The association warned that difficulties remain for the import of semi finished products required by the steel production chain, although the problems for the import of raw materials, derived from the shortage of foreign currencies, were solved in most of the cases.

Acciaierie d’Italia, Renantis & Bluefloat Ink Pact for Renewables

Taranto based Italian steelmaker Acciaierie d’Italia, Renantis and BlueFloat Energy have signed a letter of intent and have established a technical working group on strategic collaboration for the development of renewable energy projects. There are four potential development areas on which the technical working group will focus. Acciaierie d’Italia could provide steel and other materials for the construction of floating platforms for the offshore wind farms developed by the Falck Renewables and BlueFloat Energy consortium. In turn, these wind farms could supply Acciaierie d’Italia with renewable energy and green hydrogen.

In addition, Falck Renewables could support Acciaierie d’Italia in the construction of photovoltaic plants on land and buildings of the company inside and outside the plant for the production of renewable electricity.

Finally, the companies seek to establish a consortium involving specialized companies, polytechnics and research centers to promote the greatest possible use of renewable energy for energy-intensive companies and for the technological development of an industrial supply chain for the production, in Puglia, of components for offshore wind technology.

Renantis, previously Falck Renewables, develops, designs, builds and manages power production plants from renewable sources, with an installed capacity of 1,420 MW in the United Kingdom, Italy, United States, Spain, France, Norway and Sweden, using wind power, solar power, waste to energy and biomass technologies.

POSCO Launches Steel Task Force to deal with Slowing Steel Demand

Pulse News has reported that South Korea’s largest steelmaker POSCO has launched Vice Chairman Mr Kim Hag-dong led task force for its steel operations as concerns of a global recession could slow demand. POSCO said “Last year, we braced for the global economic downturn group-wide, following higher interest rates, a strong won and higher prices. This time, we launched a steel-specific task force to look into cost reductions, better profitability, and liquidity.”

POSCO has traditionally put a high value on cash in terms of management, the group’s steel affiliates, including POSCO Steeleon and POSCO M-Tech and relevant foreign subsidiaries, are participating in the group’s emergency operations.

In September, POSCO’s Pohang plant was hit by Typhoon Hinnamnor, with a large part of the facility submerged by a flooding river. All of its steel plants were back in operations on 20 January 135 days after the flooding, but the steelmaker announced its emergency operations taking into account all other various risks and threats to the company’s key segment.

POSCO Holdings saw 11% increase to KRW 84.8 trillion in sales in operating profits in 2022, but its operating profit almost halved compared with the year before, seeing a 47% dip to KRW 4.9 trillion.
