Billet offer prices surge in ASEAN, Taiwan
201 Views

Billet exporters continue to strongly propel the market upwards in East Asia, Kallanish notes. New offer prices are rising ahead of the current market level, regional market sources say.

A Malaysian mill’s offer for 130mm and 150mm 3sp billet, for March shipment, is tagged at $620/tonne cfr Manila and for 5sp billet at $628/t cfr. The market’s “momentum to [reach] $580/t cfr certainly slowed down,” a regional trader observed. But offers are far higher, he adds. Offers last week were prevailing at $585-600/t cfr Manila. On the other hand, he has not heard of bids rising from last Friday’s level of $570/t cfr and possibly $575/t cfr.

A 50,000-tonne cargo of Russian 150mm 3sp/4sp billet was heard to have transacted around Monday at $588/t cfr Taiwan, regional trading sources report. The March-shipment consignment is heard to have been sold to a large re-roller in Kaohsiung. “Generally, [Taiwanese] buyers’ idea is $570/t cfr,” a Kaohsiung trader says.

Demand for construction steel is still sluggish, he adds. He hears the Taiwanese buyer “can overcome payment” for Russian steel by issuing a letter of credit through Dubai. He deems the concluded price for Russian steel to be high but adds: “Maybe it is hard to buy from other sources at a lower price."

An Indonesian blast furnace mill has announced this week that its latest 3sp grade billet offer is at $620/t fob for end-March shipment, up from $590/t fob last Friday. The mill’s offer today is at around $645/t cfr Jakarta, compared to $615/t cfr last Friday, Indonesian market sources say. The mill’s price increase is based on speculation, an Indonesian mill manager opined on Wednesday.

Traders have been pushing up regional prices in recent weeks. A Chinese trader is heard to have ordered 50,000t of Indonesian blast furnace 3sp billet at $565/t fob last week. Trading sources say the Philippines is the top destination for these billet bookings.

19 Jan, 2023, 3:30 am

Europes’ leading coking coal miner Polish Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa has reported on its climate activities for the first time to the reputable CDP rating, receiving a high score. The score confirms the significant commitment of the company to environmental and climate action.

CDP, an international rating organization based in the UK classified Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa for the first time and placed it among leading global companies in the category of climate activities. The study registered 103 Polish companies, out of which only 16 received the highest scores from A to C. JSW was awarded a high score of C, outranking all other companies from the mining sector. This reflects the fact that JSW not only discloses climate-related information, in particular its carbon footprint, manages climate change in the organization, but also undertakes real action to prevent climate change.

In recent years, Jastrzebska Spólka Weglowa has made great strides in the area of sustainable development. The main goal is to reduce the GHG emissions, i.e. the organization’s carbon footprint (in Scopes 1 and 2), by 30% by 2030 versus 2018, which is in line with the less than 2 degree Celsius pathway of the Paris Agreement. The Company also wants to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. These actions, among others, have been noticed internationally.

Beursblik: JPMorgan verhoogt koersdoel ArcelorMittal

Insteel Industries Profit Shrinks in Oct-Dec’22 Quarter

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
20 Jan, 2023, 5:48 am

Mount Airy North Carolina headquartered US’s leading steel wire producer Insteel Industries has reported that net earnings for the first quarter of fiscal 2023 decreased to USD 11.1 million in October-December quarter of 2022, sharply down from record earnings of USD 23.1 million in October-December quarter of 2021 as results were unfavorably impacted by lower shipments and the narrowing of spreads between selling prices and raw material costs.

Net sales decreased 6.5% YoY to USD 166.9 million from USD 178.5 million in the prior year quarter primarily from a 10.0% decrease in shipments partially offset by a 3.9% increase in average selling prices. Shipments into nonresidential construction markets during the first quarter were adversely affected by customer destocking that reflects easing supply chain constraints together with the ongoing weakness in the residential construction market. On a sequential basis, shipments decreased 12.0% from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2022, reflecting the usual seasonal slowdown in construction activity, while average selling prices fell 8.8%.

Gross margin narrowed to 10.7% from 23.7% in the prior year quarter due to the reduction in spreads between selling prices and raw material costs together with a decrease in shipments and higher operating costs that reflect lower production volumes and general inflationary trends. The spread compression was driven by the consumption of higher cost inventory purchased primarily in fiscal 2022.

Insteel’s President & CEO Mr HO Woltz III said “Following a year of record financial results, the first quarter of fiscal 2023 was a period of transition as our supply chain recovers from unprecedented constraints of the prior year. As we move into the second quarter, we expect our results will continue to be affected by the consumption of higher cost inventories along with the usual weather-related slowdown in construction activity.”

Insteel is the US’s largest manufacturer of steel wire reinforcing products for concrete construction applications. Insteel manufactures and markets prestressed concrete strand and welded wire reinforcement, including engineered structural mesh, concrete pipe reinforcement and standard welded wire reinforcement. Insteel’s products are sold primarily to manufacturers of concrete products and concrete contractors for use, primarily, in nonresidential construction applications. Headquartered in Mount Airy, North Carolina, Insteel operates ten manufacturing facilities located in the United States.

MMK Launches Wireless Industrial Internet of Things Network

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
20 Jan, 2023, 5:51 am

Russian steelmaker MMK’s MMK-Informservice has installed network infrastructure for the industrial internet of things at MMK’s industrial site in Magnitogorsk in Chelyabinsk region of Russia. The IIoT core network was built on the basis of the LoRaWAN wireless data transfer protocol, which makes it possible to standardise the collection of discrete data as well as to accelerate and reduce the cost of MMK’s digitalization projects. The state-of-the-art wireless technology makes it possible to collect data from sensors installed on process equipment, including auxiliary systems, which have so far not been included in the digitalization process. It also enables Company experts to monitor indicators and to establish a data lake for further analysis and creation of supporting systems.

The network provides a stable and secure environment for transmitting information. Wireless technology eliminates the risk of disconnections and damage to cable infrastructure as well as the need to install additional telecommunication lines when incorporating new digital solutions, thus reducing their cost and the time needed to implement them.

By ensuring full coverage of the plant site and seamless data transmission, the network provides communication in hard-to-reach and remote production areas where there are no traditional hard lines. This will enable the Company to gather information on hundreds of metrics from all its industrial facilities without interruption, starting with temperature, humidity, pressure, vibration and noise levels through to flow meter data, which can be collected according to a schedule, in response to requests or when critical values are reached. The system will enable a transition from visual or scheduled equipment maintenance to condition-based maintenance, and staff will be able to hand over routine processes to automated equipment, freeing up time to engage in more complex and creative tasks.

When installing the system, the Company prioritized devices that are produced domestically and adapted for an aggressive external environment. Sensors with a built-in power supply and using the LoRaWAN protocol can operate without being connected to an electricity network or wires for up to five years. Data is collected according to a schedule and in line with various digitalization projects. It is then transmitted to the application server (IIoT platform), where it is pre-processed, and operators as well as maintenance and other personnel can access it through the Company’s corporate data warehouse.

The introduction of the IIoT network is one of the key elements of MMK’s digitalization strategy. Other IT projects that are currently being implemented on the basis of this technology include a system for monitoring personnel in hazardous areas in coke plant No. 8, which is aimed at reducing workplace injuries, and a system for monitoring the temperature of blast furnace housing in the blast furnace shop in order to minimize maintenance costs.

Dillinger Supplies 220mm Steel Plates for Liebherr’s Crane

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
20 Jan, 2023, 5:52 am

High-strength steel from German thick steel plate specialist Dillinger’s plates measuring up to 220 mm in thickness have been used for Liebherr’s largest ever heavy-duty crane HLC 295000. The steel supplied by Dillinger for the heavy-duty crane meets special requirements for yield strength, impact strength, and Z-grades, ie specific properties related to plate thickness.

The HLC 295000 heavy-duty crane, which has a maximum lifting height of 175 meters, was manufactured at the Liebherr site in Rostock and installed on the Orion, a purpose-built vessel of the Belgian DEME Group. It embodies a new generation of Liebherr offshore cranes and stands for exceptional efficiency, speed and intelligent technology. The crane’s compact design makes it ideal for the offshore sector. Its base column of just 16.8 meters in diameter is unequalled on the market. Plus, a maximum load capacity of 5,000 tonnes and a jib of up to 151 meters means the HLC is capable of moving large components with precision.

The heavy-duty crane is chiefly being used to lift offshore foundations and associated platforms during the dismantling of disused offshore oil and gas production facilities, as well as for the installation of the ever-growing offshore wind power components, as was recently the case at the Arcadis Ost 1 wind farm off the island of Rügen. Other steel products are also paving the way for an effective energy transition here: Steelwind Nordenham, a Dillingen Group company, supplied XXL monopiles for the wind farm; the largest ever required for such a purpose in Europe.

SARRALLE Installs Hydrogen Ready Ladle Preheater at Steel Mill

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
20 Jan, 2023, 5:54 am

Spanish steel technology supplier SARRALLE has installed the first ladle preheating station capable of running entirely on green hydrogen, achieving zero CO2 emissions in this ladle in a Spanish steel mill. The installation of this ladle preheater station, capable of using green hydrogen, is a highly innovative project. The existing burner that used natural gas as fuel has been replaced by a oxy-combustion burner that can use 100% green hydrogen as fuel. In this way, CO2 emissions are eliminated, as only water vapor is generated in the combustion of green hydrogen. The new burner installed, is a dual burner and it can use natural gas as fuel or mixes of natural gas with hydrogen.

The ladles are auxiliary equipment used in the steel melting plant, and are used to transport cast steel from the furnace to the casting area. SARRALLE is working with several steel manufacturers to adapt their ladle heaters from air combustion to oxy-combustion and to operate with Hydrogen, thus achieving significant energy savings and the reduction of CO2 emissions, and so that once they have a supply of hydrogen in their plants, they can operate with 100% green hydrogen.

The main steelmaking equipment with large natural gas consumptions that can be conditioned to work with green hydrogen are the burners of the Electric Arc Furnace, Ladle Heaters, Tundish Heaters, Continuous Casting Oxyfuel-Cutting and the Rolling Mill Reheating Furnace . SARRALLE offers oxy-combustion and hydrogen technology applicable to all these equipment, thus enabling savings in natural gas consumption and the total decarbonization.

Strategic Research Institute
Published on :
20 Jan, 2023, 5:57 am

Yorkshire Post has reported that Rotherham Councilor Mr Michael Bennet-Sylvester has called for industries such as steelworks to be bought back into public ownership, following the announcement that jobs may be lost at Liberty Steel. Councilor Mr Sylvester during a council meeting on 18 January “All our thoughts are with those affected at Liberty, following the company’s announcement of 440 potential redundancies, including 185 potentially in Rotherham. The company is undertaking a 45 day consultation period, and council officers have met with senior members of staff to identify the support that the council may be able to offer individuals who are affected. This is incredibly unwelcome news at what is already a very difficult time for the local economy.”

Mr Sylvester urged that “Strategic industries such as steel should be under public ownership, not individual ownership, and if something can’t be resolved that’s something the company should look at.”
