Zhang Ke, a researcher on the project at Peking University's Third Hospital, said the number of joint replacement surgeries in China has been increasing more than 30 per cent every year, with about 300,000 patients requiring hip implants in 2014.

The 3D printer used in the production of the new metallic hip joint, for example, was made by Arcam AB in Sweden, according to the manufacturer's website.

Chinese scientists and surgeons have been at the forefront of 3D printed medical applications over the last few years, and regular readers will have doubtlessly noticed a lot of 3D printed components being used in surgeries in Chinese hospitals. And last week, we learned that this number is doubtlessly set to skyrocket, as China's Food and Drug Administration announced that China's self-developed 3D printed hip replacement (joint) has been commercially certified, and is set to be put to large-scale clinical use. Now, new reports are coming in about how remarkable these 3D printed titanium acetabular cups, that have been formally approved for use in China, actually are and how they are made; among others, they will be more affordable, easier to manufacture, will last longer and reduce the risk of subsequent complications.

To refresh your memory, the approved 3D printed hip joint prosthesis was developed by Dr. Zhang Ke, Liu Zhong Jun, and Cai Hong of Peking University Third Hospital in cooperation with AK Medical, a Chinese private medical company. The 3D printer used in the manufacturing of the hip joint was designed by a Swedish company Arcam AB and uses the Electronic Beam Melting (EBM) method of manufacturing, a more precise method than laser sintering and one used by NASA for various experiments.

This is good news for the aging Chinese society, where hip disease and other issues (necrosis, dysplasia, fractures, and bone diseases such as arthritis) necessitating hip replacement is becoming more and more common. As dr. Zhang Ke recently pointed out, joint replacement surgery is very common in China – about 400,000 took place in 2014, of which at least two thirds is specifically focused on hip replacement. Depending on the domestic or imported artificial joints used, an operation costs about 50,000-100,000 RMB, something many families cannot afford. A domestically-made traditional prosthesis is often not satisfactory.

Dit is het grootste hart- en vaatcentrum van Nederland, dat ook dient als opleidingsziekenhuis voor behandeling van mensen met kanker, hart- en vaatziekten.
Volgens de overeenkomst die maandag wordt gemeld, levert Philips zeven operatie- en behandelkamers, waar artsen met de verfijnde 3D-beelden live zien hoe ze operaties uitvoeren. Niet het hoedje maar de schoenen van minister Jet Bussemaker van Onderwijs trokken dinsdag de aandacht tijdens Prinsjesdag. De bewindsvrouwe droeg 3D-geprinte schoenen en liet zien dat je daar nog op kan lopen ook.
Bussemaker had een primeur aan haar voeten, zegt Nicoline van Enter van SLEM, het innovatie- en educatiecentrum voor schoenen in Waalwijk waar de schoenen zijn gemaakt. "We kunnen al langer schoenen printen, maar dat was altijd van hard materiaal; pumps voor de show of waar je hooguit één keer mee de catwalk op kon. Nu hebben we de printers zo doorontwikkeld dat we kunnen werken met flexibel materiaal. Deze schoenen zitten lekker, zijn slijtvast en gaan bij wijze van spreken jaren mee."

De schoenen, ontworpen door studenten van de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TUe), zijn maatwerk, zegt Van Enter. "Er is eerst een scan van de voet gemaakt. Daarna is de schoen laag voor laag opgebouwd."

Dat de schoenen zouden passen, stond dus al vast. Toch vond Van Enter het gisteren nog een spannende dag. "Het was de bedoeling dat de minister de schoenen van tevoren zou passen, maar dat is niet gelukt omdat ze langer in het buitenland bleef dan was voorzien." Na de troonrede kreeg Van Enter echter een geruststellende feedback: 'geen blaren'. "Ze zaten perfect."

Niet alleen de schoenen van Bussemaker waren gisteren hightech. De minister, die graag uitdraagt wat Nederland te bieden heeft, liet ook haar kleding ontwerpen door studenten van de TUe. "Haar jurk en hoed zijn ontworpen met computermodellen. Haar handtas is net als de schoenen 3D-geprint."
