Youngman’s Phoenix License basically ‘useless’
Industry News | Ash | April 17, 2012 at 10:49 pm
At least according to Saab’s United:
We all know that Youngman bought licenses for the phoenix platform in the autumn of 2011. The idea was that Youngman and Saab would develop new cars together and Youngman helped Saab stay afloat by purchasing some licenses of the new phoenix platform.
A discussion has been going on for some time within the Swedish media about these licenses and what they actually mean. If Youngman would loose the sale of Saab to someone else, for example Mahindra, could Youngman actually block Mahindra in any way?, the answer is simple and short: No…
We made it our point to find out exactly what they have bought and after placing a few calls to some selected people who have first hand information about this issue the answer was very clear to us. Youngman bought a non-exclusive license which gives them right to get an overall idea of what the phoenix platform is all about. Since this thing is very complex an easy description could be given like this: say that you have a really nice cake, what you can do is to make a description of what it tastes like but not include the ingredients in that description, that is what Youngman has. On top of that the description is written in a language which nobody can read so it is more or less useless.
For Youngman to make use of their acquisition they first of all need to get hold of the engineers that created the phoenix platform to understand the “language” they used to create it with. The second thing they need to do is to get all other licenses as well in order to create a full product out of it and that could take at least 3-4 years according to one of our sources. So even if Youngman acquired the other licenses they would still need the people to finish the product, without all three components each individual, is useless.
One key word is also very important about this and that word is “none-exclusive rights” which is what Youngman has. Which means that Saab can sell this license to anyone they want and Youngman does NOT have exclusive rights on anything and can in such not block any other buyer who obtains these licenses by purchasing the bankrupt Saab Automobile AB.
