Wärtsilä & Hycamite to Develop Production of Hydrogen from LNG

The technology group Wärtsilä has entered into a joint development agreement with Hycamite TCD Technologies, a privately-owned Finnish company specialising in the development of a pioneering technology for producing clean hydrogen and solid carbon from methane. The two companies will work together to enable cost-effective production of hydrogen from LNG onboard marine vessels. The concept design will be ready by mid 2023 and the prototype testing unit will be ready during the second half of 2024.

The concept will allow the existing LNG infrastructure to be utilised and enable production of hydrogen onboard in combination with Wärtsilä's LNGPac Fuel Gas Supply System. By producing hydrogen onboard and blending it with LNG, the current range of fuel flexible Wärtsilä dual-fuel engines can reduce the vessel’s overall carbon dioxide and methane slip emissions. Alternatively, the hydrogen can also be used in fuel cells onboard.

The by-product from the process is solid carbon that, unlike conventional technologies which produce carbon-dioxide as a by-product, can more easily be stored and managed onboard. The carbon produced consists of high-grade allotropes, like industrial graphite and carbon nanotubes, thereby offering a possible additional revenue stream.

Rotterdam wil ammoniakkraker voor import groene waterstof bouwen

Achttien bedrijven in de Rotterdamse haven willen samen een ammoniakkraker laten bouwen om daardoor 1 miljoen ton groene waterstof per jaar te kunnen importeren. Maar dan moet die ammoniak wel groen zijn natuurlijk.

De bedrijven hebben bouwgigant Fluor opdracht gegeven om de mogelijkheden te onderzoeken voor een grote centrale kraakinstallatie in het havengebied om geïmporteerde ammoniak weer om te zetten in waterstof. Die waterstof kan vervolgens in de haven worden gebruikt of via pijpleidingen verder worden getransporteerd om andere industriële clusters zoals Chemelot in Limburg of in Noordwest-Europa CO2-vrij te maken. Gemiddeld kan een miljoen ton groene waterstof ongeveer 10 miljoen ton CO2-reductie opleveren.

Makkelijker transporteren
Ammoniak is een eenvoudige manier om waterstof te transporteren. Het bestaat uit stikstof en waterstof en als je in een kraker het stikstofmolecuul eraf haalt, houd je waterstof over. Ammoniak is te vervoeren bij een temperatuur van min 33 graden Celsius. Om waterstof in vloeibare vorm te kunnen vervoeren, moet het tot min 254 graden afgekoeld worden. Dat kost veel energie en is niet rendabel.

Veel CO2-uitstoot
De Nederlandse industrie en transportsector hebben de komende jaren grote hoeveelheden groene waterstof nodig om hun klimaatdoelen te halen. Nu wordt waterstof nog vooral gemaakt van aardgas, waarbij veel CO2 vrijkomt. In Nederland wordt nu 0,8 miljoen ton waterstof geproduceerd, waarvoor vier miljard kuub aardgas wordt gebruikt. Dat zorgt voor een CO2-uitstoot van 12,5 miljoen ton. Waterstof wordt pas groen als het met hernieuwbare elektriciteit uit zon en wind wordt gemaakt. Dat gaat bijvoorbeeld via elektrolysers. Om dat te kunnen doen bouwt Rotterdam onder meer aan de eerste fabriek voor Battolysers, een combinatie van batterij en elektrolysers die groene stroom opslaat en er groene waterstof van maakt.

Groene ammoniak
Dan nog is import van waterstof nodig. De chemie in Rotterdam en Nederland gebruikt al veel ammoniak, bijvoorbeeld voor het maken van kunstmest. Daarom hebben de bedrijven ervaring met het vervoer van ammoniak en is de infrastructuur daarvoor al aanwezig. Er staat bijvoorbeeld al een ammoniakterminal in de Rotterdamse haven. Bij het maken van ammoniak komt echter ook veel CO2 vrij. Wereldwijd wordt bij die productie 2 procent van alle CO2 uitgestoten. “De waterstof in Rotterdam is dus alleen groen als de ammoniak ook groen geproduceerd wordt”, geeft woordvoerder Sjaak Poppe van het havenbedrijf Rotterdam toe. “Daar zijn we nu marktketens voor aan het opzetten. Op zich is het alleen logisch om groene ammoniak voor transport van waterstof te gebruiken. Anders kun je het beter hier maken van aardgas.”

Grote besparing
Allard Castelein, CEO van het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam, denkt dat de waterstof die Nederland en Europa nodig heeft voor een aanzienlijk deel geïmporteerd kan worden via de haven van Rotterdam. “Ammoniak is één van de meest efficiënte manieren om waterstof te transporteren en als we één centrale ammoniakkraker realiseren kunnen we tijd, ruimte en middelen besparen om de import van een miljoen ton waterstof per jaar mogelijk te maken”, zegt hij.

Naast het Havenbedrijf Rotterdam doen aan het initiatief ook Air Liquide, Aramco, BP, Essent/EON, ExxonMobil, Gasunie, GES, Hes international, Koole Terminals, Linde, OCI, RWE, Shell, Sasol, Uniper, Vopak en VTTI mee. De haalbaarheidsstudie zal kijken naar de technische, economische, milieu- en veiligheidseisen van een grote kraakinstallatie. De eerste resultaten van het onderzoek worden begin 2023 verwacht.

Decarbonising the global steel industry with hydrogen is possible and probably inevitable, but it won’t be easy, according to presenters during Kallanish’s Hydrogen for Steelmaking webinar hosted on 7 December.

The global steel industry accounts for about 6-7% of global emissions, according to Kallanish Index Services managing director Steve Randall.

Eliminating those emissions purely with hydrogen will be a challenge on two fronts - capacity and cost, he says.

Nel Hydrogen ceo Håkon Volldal points out that tackling the capacity side of the problem will involve a ratcheting up of next-gen capacity while meeting extant needs with proven technologies. Lower costs will follow as technology improves.

“If you invest hundreds of millions of Euros in a DRI facility, you want to make sure the plant is actually working,” he says.

Nel’s Herøya facility in Norway currently has a capacity of 500 megawatts. It is in the process of doubling that, and the facility may eventually be ramped up to 2 gigawatts. Sometime in the first quarter, the company expects to announce a US site for a 4 GW facility in the US.

SSAB’s vice president of sustainable business and public affairs Thomas Hörnfeldt adds that his company’s HYBRIT joint venture anticipates shipping its first commercial product by 2026. A HYBRIT pilot plant produced its first fossil-free steel in 2021.

Crucially, fossil-free steel is identical to traditional steel once downstream processing begins, he says. It’s the shedding of carbon emissions during the crude steel production process that is truly revolutionary.

ArcelorMittal technical head of government affairs and climate change Stéphane Tondo anticipates that the majority of EU steel production will be decarbonised by 2030.

Getting there, however, will require massive investment in both green energy and electrolyser capacity.

Of the 157 million tonnes currently produced, about 60% - or 94m t - is suitable for conversion to the hydrogen process.

That will require 37-60 GW of electrolyser capacity, 296 terawatt-hours of green electricity, and about €180 billion ($189.38 billion).

Such a massive effort will require a new slate of government policies to ensure an affordable, available, and stable hydrogen supply, he says.

“[Current] regulation is not helping the supply of hydrogen in a stable way for the steel industry,” he adds.

Babcock Wilcox & Chart to Develop Hydrogen with BrightLoop

Babcock & Wilcox has entered into an agreement with Chart Industries, to collaborate on the further deployment of B&W’s BrightLoop hydrogen generation technology, utilizing Chart’s integrated hydrogen liquefaction and cryogenic carbon capture equipment and expertise. Together, this solution provides economic generation of low-carbon hydrogen and supplies cost-effective, transportable forms of liquid hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

B&W and Chart will also work together to develop sales and marketing strategies for potential commercial hydrogen and carbon capture customers and projects.

B&W's flexible BrightLoop technology, part of its ClimateBright suite of decarbonization and hydrogen technologies, is applicable to a wide range of feedstock, product outputs and applications for industries and utilities. The BrightLoop system is scalable and can convert a wide range of fuels, including natural gas, coal, petroleum coke (petcoke), methane, biomass, biogas, and other industrial process off-gases and materials into hydrogen, syngas and steam for power, process and heating while also isolating CO2 for storage or use.

Chart’s state-of-the-art, efficient hydrogen liquefaction process technology and equipment solutions allow for produced hydrogen gas to be more effectively stored and transported much longer distances as a dense liquid, using Chart storage tanks, trailers, ISO containers, and rail cars. Chart’s Sustainable Energy Solutions cryogenic carbon capture technology removes CO2 from flue gas and supplies liquid CO2 ready for transport via trailer or pipeline to storage or utilization. The refrigeration for both hydrogen liquefaction and CCC can be combined to decrease capital and operating costs.

NuScale Power Signs R&D Pact for Hydrogen Production

NuScale Power along with Shell Global Solutions and industry participants will develop and assess a concept for an economically optimized Integrated Energy System for hydrogen production using electricity and process heat from a NuScale VOYGR small modular reactor power plant. The project entitled, Development and Demonstration of a Concept for an Economically Optimized IES, will be completed in two phases. Additional research participants include Idaho National Laboratory, Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems, Fuel Cell Energy, FPoliSolutions, and GSE Solutions.

NuScale’s flexible SMR technology holds the potential to balance and stabilize power grids dominated by renewable energies through hydrogen production. Energy markets present reliability concerns at times when energy demand is high and renewable energy production is low. In these markets, hydrogen would be used as an end-product or as a stored energy source to be processed through a Reversible Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (RSOFC) for electricity generation.

A NuScale control room simulator will be modified to evaluate the dynamics of the IES and will include models for the Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell system for hydrogen production, in addition to a RSOFC for electricity production. The research will consider the number of NuScale Power Modules needed for use in SOEC hydrogen production and the quantity of hydrogen stored for subsequent electricity production. Further, local economic factors from the UAMPS Carbon Free Power Project will be assessed, such as the impact in the Western Energy Imbalance Market, resource adequacy programs, and other local market factors to be defined.

Battolyser Hydrogen Plant to be built at Port of Rotterdam

The world’s first large scale Battolyser factory will be constructed in the port of Rotterdam to meet soaring demand for green hydrogen and electricity storage. The 1 GW per annum Battolyser factory will be located in the M4H area, an industrial site in the heart of Rotterdam. The cost of developing the 14,000 m2 production site, complete with new office and laboratory facilities, is estimated to be about €100 million. Once fully operational it will require some 700 directly employed staff plus create up to four times as many indirect jobs with supply chain partners.

The factory will also act as Battolyser Systems’ headquarter and R&D center, and will open during the second half of 2024. The final investment decision is scheduled for late 2023 and requires private and public investments to compete internationally.

Battolyser has developed and manufactures the world’s first integrated battery/electrolyser system. A Battolyser can produce hydrogen from solar and wind when power prices are low and provide electricity to the grid when prices are high. The system is extremely flexible, efficient and robust. It can alleviate grid congestion, enable the build-out of more solar and wind energy developments, and offer the lowest cost green hydrogen. The Battolyser technology is deployable at scale using abundant and conflict free active materials: nickel and iron. The technology was invented by Prof. Dr. Fokko Mulder and his research team at Delft University of Technology.

Woodside Selected for Meridian Southern Hydrogen in NZ

Meridian, with the support of Ngai Tahu, has selected Woodside Energy as the preferred partner to move forward to the development stage of the proposed Southern Green Hydrogen project in New Zealand. A final investment decision will follow the development stage. Woodside was selected after an extensive competitive bidding process based on its capability and experience in operations, process safety, and liquids marketing.

Mitsui & Co is also in discussions to join the project and develop the potential market for ammonia offtake, with the aim of creating a world-class collaboration that covers the full hydrogen and ammonia supply chain. Mitsui has 50 years of experience in the ammonia business, including the largest share of ammonia imports into Japan.

Subject to finalising commercial arrangements, Meridian, Woodside, and Mitsui will work towards commencing front-end engineering design for the project.

Windcat Orders Hydrogen Elevation CSOV from Damen

Europe’s market-leading offshore personnel transfer company Windcat has placed an ordersfor the construction of a series of hydrogen-powered Commissioning Service Operation Vessels with Damen Shipyards. The “Elevation Series” CSOVs have been designed by Damen Shipyards in cooperation with Windcat and CMB.TECH. The result is a revolutionary new design with increased capabilities and flexibility compared to existing vessels. The vessels are 87 m long, 20 m wide, can accommodate 120 people on board and will be powered by hydrogen. The series will be delivered from 2025.

The CSOVs will be built at Ha Long Shipyard, Vietnam, and will be delivered to Windcat Offshore, a new business unit within Windcat, which will focus on offshore energy commissioning and services. Initially, two vessels have been ordered with options for further vessels. A CSOV is a vessel that remains in an offshore wind farm for an extended period of up to 30 days, providing maintenance materials and housing technicians in hotel-style accommodation. This logical next step in Windcat’s journey builds on Windcat’s 20 years of experience in the offshore renewable energy sector and follows four years of market and vessel design evaluation.

To significantly reduce the vessels’ CO2 footprint, Windcat and CMB.TECH, will provide the same dual fuel hydrogen technology for the Elevation Series as on board of the Hydrocat, the world’s first hydrogen powered CTV (Crew Transfer Vessel). This approach will also make a critical contribution to the development of rules and regulations related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel in medium-sized vessels.

EverWind Selects Black & Veatch for Hydrogen Hub in Nova Scotia

EverWind Fuels has selected Black & Veatch to provide front-end engineering design services for its green hydrogen and ammonia production and storage facility in Point Tupper in Nova Scotia in Canada, with initial commercial operations planned for 2025.

In its first phase, the facility will produce green hydrogen and green ammonia through electrolysis using certified green power from the Nova Scotia Power transmission system; onshore wind generation will power production in a second phase. In future phases, EverWind will use offshore wind power to produce hydrogen through electrolysis, unlocking Nova Scotia’s offshore wind capabilities. The first two phases will produce a combined 1 million tonnes per annum of green ammonia.

EverWind is a private developer of green hydrogen and ammonia production and storage sites and global engineering and construction company Black & Veatch is a green energy solutions leader.

Kabinet wil meer zekerheid over toevoer grondstoffen en halfproducten

Het kabinet wil meer zekerheid over de beschikbaarheid van grondstoffen en halfproducten voor de Nederlandse en Europese industrie. De controle over deze grondstoffen krijgt naast een economische steeds meer een geopolitieke dimensie. Landen zoals China zijn in toenemende mate bereid om economische invloed in te zetten als geopolitiek wapen.

Kritieke grondstoffen zijn nodig voor bijvoorbeeld batterijen, halfgeleiders, medische hulpmiddelen, waterstofproductie, zonnepanelen en ledverlichting. Met de nationale grondstoffenstrategie zet het kabinet in op voldoende beschikbaarheid van kritieke mineralen en metalen, circulariteit, op het vinden van minder schaarse alternatieven en verkleinen van de impact op mens en milieu. De ministerraad heeft ingestemd met deze aanpak in de nationale grondstoffenstrategie op voorstel van minister Adriaansens van Economische Zaken en Klimaat, minister Schreinemacher voor Buitenlandse Handel en Ontwikkelingssamenwerking en staatssecretaris Heijnen van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat.

Nederlandse positie opbouwen in kritieke grondstoffenketens

Digitalisering en verduurzaming zijn de basis voor een sterke Nederlandse economie in de toekomst. Om hierop te kunnen inzetten, is het zaak om in EU-verband risico’s op nieuwe afhankelijkheden van grondstoffen en halfproducten aan te pakken. Nederland is op dit moment één van de meest concurrerende economieën. De Nederlandse industrie, logistieke sector en aanverwante bedrijven hebben wereldwijd al een sterke positie opgebouwd in traditionele grondstoffenketens zoals olie en staal. Het kabinet ziet kansen om ook een goede positie op te bouwen in de kritieke grondstoffenketens zodat Nederland en de EU minder afhankelijk zijn.

De Nederlandse bodem bevat zelf nauwelijks kritieke grondstoffen: deze zitten vooral in andere werelddelen en onder de zeebodem. Wel zijn elders in de EU grondstoffen als lithium en kobalt potentieel beschikbaar. Door in Nederland en de EU meer raffinage-, verwerkings-, assemblage- en transportcapaciteit op te bouwen en beter hierin samen te werken met andere grondstofrijke landen vermindert de kwetsbaarheid bij bijvoorbeeld tekorten.

Inzet op minder schaarse alternatieven

De kennis en het innovatief vermogen van onze bedrijven en kennisinstellingen kunnen we meer benutten voor het slim ontwerpen van producten, op het terugwinnen van kritieke grondstoffen en het terugdringen van negatieve effecten op het milieu. Daarom gaat het kabinet in haar innovatiebeleid scherper kiezen voor sleuteltechnologieën die bijdragen aan digitalisering, circulariteit en verduurzaming.

Bedrijven kunnen door te innoveren bijvoorbeeld kiezen voor grondstoffen die meer algemeen beschikbaar zijn. Zo is er nu voor waterstofproductie via elektrolyse - het benutten van elektriciteit om water te splitsen – in de elektrodes vaak veel van de kritieke grondstof iridium nodig. Andere methodes bevatten minder kritieke metalen, maar zijn soms nog wel minder efficiënt. Doorontwikkeling van deze niet-schaarse alternatieven vermindert op termijn afhankelijkheid van andere landen.

Bovendien zet Nederland ook in op het vinden van alternatieve leveranciers. Dat kan door samenwerkingen aan te gaan in EU-verband met zowel ontwikkelde als ontwikkelingslanden in onder meer Latijns-Amerika en Afrika.

Benutten van circulariteit

Circulaire strategieën zijn ook een belangrijk onderdeel in de nationale grondstoffenstrategie om de leveringszekerheid van grondstoffen te vergroten en de negatieve milieu-impact te verkleinen. Daarmee draagt de uitvoering van de grondstoffenstrategie ook bij aan de ambitie van het kabinet om toe te werken naar een volledige circulaire economie in 2050.

Het kabinet is bijvoorbeeld van plan om innovatie te stimuleren door circulaire eisen op te nemen in aanbestedingen. Zo kunnen we in de toekomst kritieke grondstoffen gemakkelijker terugwinnen uit onze windmolenparken. Het kabinet ziet mogelijkheden om dit uit te breiden naar andere aanbestedingen, bijvoorbeeld voor defensie, telecommunicatie of bouw. Hierdoor creëren we circulaire producten die de overheid zelf aankoopt, waaruit kritieke grondstoffen teruggewonnen kunnen worden.

De nationale grondstoffenstrategie vormt ook de basis voor de Nederlandse inzet in de EU op de aankomende Europese Critical Raw Materials Act.

Fortescue & ATCO Unveil Hydrogen Refuelling Station in Perth

Leading Australian iron ore miner Fortescue and ATCO Australia have opened Western Australia’s first green hydrogen refuelling station at ATCO’s Clean Energy Innovation Hub in the Perth metropolitan area.

The H2 Refueller uses green hydrogen produced onsite at ATCO’s facility in Jandakot from renewable electricity through electrolysis. It will enable Fortescue, ATCO and third parties such as the WA Police to support their fleets of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, with the capability to refuel a Toyota Mirai with green hydrogen in less than five minutes and supporting up to 500 kilometres of emissions-free travel.

Metso Outotec to Convert Pilot Plant for Hydrogen based DRI

Metso Outotec will convert its existing 700 mm Circulating Fluidized Bed pilot plant in Frankfurt, Germany, for hydrogen-based direct reduction of fine ore, applying the proven Planet Positive CircoredTM technology.

The pilot plant can also be used for the reduction of high-grade iron fines concentrate and to confirm the design basis for an industrial-scale CircoredTM plant. Commissioning of the plant is expected to take place by December 2023.

Once operational, the 700 mm pilot plant will be able to continuously produce 150 – 200 kg/h of direct reduced iron, using 100% hydrogen as the sole reducing agent. The pilot plant will have an integrated pre-heating and reduction section, followed by a gas cleaning and recirculation facility. The investment includes installation of electric heaters in the process, making it an almost zero-carbon-emission plant. The data obtained from the use of electric heaters will be used to scale up the design of industrial heaters capable to running on renewable energy.

Cummins to Power Hydrogen Project of GAIL Vijaypur

Cummins will provide technology in collaboration with the EPC player Tecnimont to build one of India’s largest proton exchange membrane electrolyzer for GAIL at Vijaipur, in Madhya Pradesh, India.

Cummins will leverage its proprietary PEM electrolysis technology, one of the most advanced and efficient technologies available today, to manufacture electrolyzers for the GAIL project. bp to Explore Potential for Green Hydrogen Production in Egypt

bp has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Egypt under which it will explore the potential for establishing a new green hydrogen production facility in the country.

Under the MoU, bp will carry out several studies to evaluate the technical and commercial feasibility of developing a multi-phase, large scale green hydrogen export hub in Egypt. It is intended that high potential locations across Egypt will be considered as part of the feasibility study, targeting best-in-class resources. Green hydrogen is produced by the electrolysis of water, powered by renewable energy.

GKN Aerospace & IAAPS to Develop Hydrogen Propulsion for Aviation

Leading global multi-technology tier 1 supplier GKN Aerospace and advanced propulsion R&I centre IAAPS have announced a strategic partnership to develop and validate novel hydrogen technology solutions for the decarbonisation of the aviation industry.

IAAPS will support GKN Aerospace’s ground-breaking H2GEAR Programme to develop a megawatt scale cryogenic electric drive system using PEM fuel cells. IAAPS will deliver key aspects of the comprehensive testing and validation programme at its new R&I centre with both green H2 production and liquid H2 storage facility. The multi-year, multi-million-pound project will encompass both component and system level testing of hybrid hydrogen and electric architecture and drive forward investment in infrastructure for the delivery of gaseous and liquid hydrogen and development of cryogenic cooling systems.

H2GEAR is a GKN Aerospace led, pioneering UK collaboration initiative with the aim to develop a liquid hydrogen propulsion system for sub-regional aircraft that could be scaled up to larger aircraft. Liquid hydrogen is being converted to electricity within a fuel cell system. A cryogenic cooling network will be used to maximise the performance of the power distribution network and electrical machine. This electricity efficiently powers the aircraft, eliminating carbon emissions and creating a new generation of clean air travel. The H2GEAR programme is supported by GBP 27 million of ATI funding, matched by GKN Aerospace and its industrial partners.

Voltalia & TAQA Arabia to Develop Hydrogen Production in Egypt

Voltalia and TAQA Arabia have signed a MOU with the Government of Egypt, to develop, finance and operate a cluster combining green hydrogen production with solar and wind power generation.

The initial project will include a new green hydrogen production facility with a capacity of 15,000 tonnes per year, in a greenfield site near Ain Sokhna port in the Suez Canal Economic Zone, through a 100-megawatt electrolyser supplied with 283 megawatts of renewable power.

The project will be expanded to 150,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen with an electrolyser capacity of up to an aggregate of 1 gigawatt supplied by an aggregate of 2.7 gigawatts of solar and wind power. The land required by the cluster will be provided by the Egyptian government.

EnBW Chooses Stade for LNG & H2 Imports at Hanseatic Energy Hub

EnBW will import three billion cubic meters of LNG per year via the Hanseatic Energy Hub in Stade beginning with commissioning. The capacities were booked bindingly in the past few days as part of a sales process and will make a significant contribution to Germany's security of supply with affordable energy. In addition, EnBW will have the option to move to ammonia as a hydrogen-based energy source at a later date. This possibility is open to all Hanseatic Energy Hub customers with a long-term contract of more than 10 years.

The Hanseatic Energy Hub is a future-flexible modular system for the green energy transition that utilizes the diverse opportunities of the Stade energy region. The terminal, port, industrial park and connecting infrastructure are designed so that a conversion can take place in a modular way. Main tanks, pipelines and other immovable parts will be commissioned ammonia-ready. The foundations are already structurally designed to support a higher load. Additional space has also been reserved in the industrial park for separate ammonia tanks to support the market ramp-up from the outset.

Both EnBW and HEH are focusing on ammonia as a carrier for hydrogen, since its handling, transport and storage have been proven over many years. Ammonia is one of the most widely produced chemicals in the world and has many different applications. After transport, it can be reconverted to hydrogen or used directly as a CO2-neutral fuel. Corresponding technologies are making rapid progress. Co-combustion of up to 20 % ammonia has already been successfully implemented in smaller power plants and furnaces.
