Scottish Power to replace gas and hydro projects with UK offshore wind

Reuters reported that Iberdrola's Scottish Power will use offshore wind power to replace the capacity of the gas and hydro power projects it is selling, with wind becoming its sole source of electricity production. Scottish Power, the British arm of the Spanish energy giant, earlier this month announced plans to sell a group of gas, hydro and pumped storage power plants for 702 million pounds ($900 million) to British power generator Drax.

The sale makes Scottish Power the first of Britain's big six energy suppliers to shift to 100 percent renewable electricity generation but it will more than halve its UK capacity.

Scottish Power already owns around 2,000 megawatts (MW) of operational on and offshore wind projects in the UK and plans to more than double this, with new East Anglia wind projects off the east coast of England set to replace the lost generation, Jonathan Cole told Reuters in an interview. He said that "If you look at the capacity of East Anglia one and three, with the two projects alone we will cover the generation being sold to Drax.”

The 2.5 billion pound East Anglia One project will, at 714 megawatts (MW) of capacity, produce enough electricity to power around 600,000 homes in 2020.

The company is also developing the East Anglia Three windfarm, which at 1,200 MW could power around 890,000 homes.

France to launch of 750 MW offshore wind turbines tender

EV WINDS reported that French energy ministry is close to launching a 750 MW tender for offshore wind power off the coastline of the northern city of Dunkirk, people familiar with the matter said this week. However, the launch of the tender was dependent on the unveiling of France’s energy roadmap detailing policy to 2028 due at the end of November, which was set to spur the transition to renewables, Dunkirk mayor Patrice Vergriete told Montel.

The Dunkirk wind farm project is expected to improve the image of offshore wind power in France, damaged by a controversy earlier this year around high costs for the first six offshore wind energy plants (3 GW), launched in 2012 and 2014.

It will also help France meet a target of 32% renewable energy in energy consumption by 2030.

Mr Jean-Louis Bal, head of green lobby group SER said that “The tender should reveal rates close to those found in northern Europe of around EUR 60/Mwh.”

Last week, Mr Bal told France’s economy minister, Bruno Le Maire, that the government was taking “no risk” in launching this tender.

Denmark-Netherlands subsea power cable reaches Dutch coast- Report

Reuters reported that a subsea power line set to link the networks of Denmark and the Netherlands reached the Dutch coast as part of plans to share excess electricity from wind farms and other sources. The 325 km (202 mile) long COBRAcable, short for Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam, has a capacity of around 700 megawatts (MW) and is expected to become fully operational in the third quarter of 2019.

Mr Jeroen Brouwers, spokesman for Dutch grid operator TenneT said that "This is an important step towards the integration of electricity networks in western Europe. We will now have the first link between the Netherlands and Denmark, adding to existing connections with Norway and Britain."

TenneT and Danish counterpart Energinet.dk have invested 621 million euros (USD 705 million) in the project, supported by a 86 million euro subsidy from the European Commission as part of efforts to build a European electricity network.

The link will run from Endrup in Denmark to Eemshaven in the Netherlands when completed.

Rapid growth in renewable energy generation including wind and solar has increased the need for better interconnections between countries, prompting grid operators across Europe to invest in new cross-border lines.

Wind turbines already supply around half of the total electricity needed in Denmark, but last year delivered only around 2 percent of all energy in The Netherlands.

The Dutch plan to build wind farms with a capacity of up to 11,000 MW in its part of the North Sea in the next decade.
