A maturing Australian biotechnology sector is attracting the attention of

venture capitalists from around the world. Securing investment on mutually beneficial terms is now the challenge.

Money is starting to flow into biotechnology companies after a long drought, and there is more to come. Australian venture capital companies have at least $439 million to invest, which includes new funds raised and funds due to close within months. Foreign venture capital companies are also demonstrating their interest in the local market through recent deals, and promising more.

Sophisticated deals over the past 12 months show that leaders of biotechnology companies are honing their ability to communicate with investors, driving harder bargains to get money, and are using partnerships at both the early and later stages of drug development to get their products to market. Venture capital is not limited to private companies. In 2006, venture capital firms made their first PIPE deals (private investment in public entities), and more are planned. EG Capital is raising $125 million for a PIPE fund.

New funds include South Australia's Terra Rossa Capital, which raised $35 million last year, Starfish Ventures, which already has a $138 million fund investing in both information technology and biotechnology, intends to raise another $200 million by June. Brisbane company CM Capital, which invests in IT and biotechnology, raised $125 million in April last year. Specialist biotechnology investor GBS Venture Partners still has about half of its $150 million GBS BioVentures III Fund available, and the listed biotechnology investment company BioTech Capital still has $9 million to invest.

Overseas investors also put their money on the table in 2006, with deals such as MPM Capital's $23 million investment in the skin cancer treatments company Peplin; and a joint investment between GBS and the United States firm, Alta Partners, to buy 18.5 per cent of ChemGenex Pharmaceuticals. Companies are happy, but not ecstatic, to see the money. "The venture capital funds are pretty small," Alan Robertson, the chief executive of Pharmaxis, says.

Government support for biotechnology at both state and federal levels is growing. In June, money will start to flow from an independent $30 million fund to commercialise products from 13 medical research institutes, with an extra $1.2 million each from the Victorian and New South Wales state governments to help with administrative costs. The federal government has also committed $238 million of its National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy program to biotechnology and related areas. The biotechnology sector is not, however, applauding the federal government's plan to lift restrictions on foreign companies claiming tax concessions for research and development conducted in Australia. "Big pharmaceutical companies do not need tax breaks," Robertson says. "It won't help us because we do not yet make profits." Pharmaceutical companies are taking more notice of small biotechnology companies, and investors are following. "When the big pharmaceutical companies go shopping, this is a sign of strengthening activity, and the whole of the world starts watching," David Blake, an analyst and the director of Bioshares newsletter, says.

Rebuilding credibility among retail and venture capital investors has been a long hard slog for the biotechnology sector. Retail investors lost patience with many companies for their over-hyped claims about products and milestones. Last year, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission cracked the whip and two companies, Avantogen, and Chemeq, were fined for breaches of the disclosure rules. There are still problems, particularly when biotechs present reports on small clinical trials as definitive, or ready the market for clinical announcements with news that leads to sharp rises and falls in share prices. "Short-term volatility in the biotechnology sector is not helpful for any of us," Robertson says. But there should be no more excuses. In October 2005, the Australian Securities Exchange and the industry body AusBiotech released a code of best practice for reporting by life science firms.

Several big acquisitions last year attracted investor attention, suggesting untapped value among listed life-science companies. CSL, which had its cervical cancer vaccine, Gardasil, approved late last year, bought antibody specialist Zenyth. The US company Hospira bought the Adelaide company Bresagen. And medical equipment maker Visions System was sold to Danaher for $814 million.

The industry's vital statistics are strong. According to a report by consulting firm Innovation Dynamics, employment in biotechnology companies has doubled between 2005 and 2006 and is now more than 12,000. And the number of biotechnology companies performing well is increasing.

Long-established darlings such as CSL, Resmed and Cochlear, no longer dominate the headlines. Others, including Avexa, ChemGenex, Peplin, Clinuvel and Pharmaxis are hitting milestones with trials and capital raisings.

"Companies are moving into later-stage product development, with products ready for the market," Tim Murphy, the chief executive of the industry forum, BioMelbourne Network, says.

Investors have also changed. They have become more sophisticated and educated about the long lead times and vast amounts of money it takes to get a therapy or medical product from the clinic, through three phases of trials, and approved by regulators. "Astute investors close to the life science sector can distinguish those companies that have products close to market," ASX-listed Acrux chief executive Richard Treagus says.

Clinuvel is mentioned in March 2 issue of Science Journal. Here's the "teaser" on the site. Clinuvel is mentioned by name in the Article, but I'm not sure if there's anything new. They could possibly mention other compounds in the works at other labs - not sure.

Onderstaand bericht stond vandaag in de kranten en op nu.nl. Maar liefst 15% van de Nederlanders heeft een zonneallergie.... en dan praten we nog niet over de rest van de wereldbevolking. UTRECHT - Lichttesten zijn in meer dan 85 procent van nieuwe gevallen niet nodig om de diagnose zonneallergie te bepalen. De ziektegeschiedenis, oftewel de anamnese, is voldoende om de allergie vast te stellen.

Dit zegt dermatoloog in opleiding Ines Schornagel van het Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht. Donderdag promoveert Schornagel op haar onderzoek.

Lichttesten zijn alleen nodig in twijfelgevallen of om de ernst van een aandoening vast te stellen, aldus Schornagel. Bij de lichttesten wordt de huid gedurende meerdere dagen aan diverse golflengten van licht blootgesteld. Om het beste advies voor therapie te geven dient de huid zowel met UV-A als UV-B belicht te worden. Vier testdagen is voldoende, aldus Schornagel.

Bultjes

Ongeveer 15 procent van de Nederlanders heeft zonneallergie. Mensen die de aandoening hebben, krijgen jeukende bultjes en blaasjes enkele uren nadat ze in de zon hebben gezeten.

In zeer ernstige gevallen zijn mensen zo overgevoelig dat ze niet of nauwelijks buiten kunnen komen.

Ik heb me goed ingelezen in dit aandeel en aardig wat informatie wat hier is vermeld nagepluisd.

Ik ben tot de conclusie gekomen dat dit een heel interessant aandeel is, met hele grote groei mogelijkheden!!

Ik wacht vandaag nog even af maar wil volgende week een bescheiden positie innemen ( die ik misschien nog uitbouw in de toekomst) ik denk dat als ik in de range van 0,55-0,58 nog kan instappen, ik dan aardig goed zit.
Zeker omdat de weerstand zich op 0,62-0,63 bevindt.

Verwacht iemand van jullie op korte termijn nog nieuws of andere belangrijke informatie over Clineuvel?

Dit is hoed dan ook een lange termijn aandeel, waar je niet iedere dag/week naar moet kijken of er een koerswinst gemaakt is. Volgens mijn mening, en zoals ik gelezen heb , ook de mening van verschillende andere beleggers kan dit aandeel voor een leuk rendement zorgen op termijn!!

Koersdoelen durf ik zelf niet te geven voor dit jaar.... al verwacht ik zelf wel een leuke stijging van de koers.
