Covad gets some help from Earthlink
Takes a stake in return for access

Posted on 2006-03-16 09:48:14

Covad has received a chunk of money from Earthlink in return for access to Covad equipment in eight new cities. Covad, which still loses at least 15 million a quarter on revenue of ~100 million, delays having to go back to the probably unfriendly open financial markets for new cash, and Earthlink converts 50 million into expanding a combined data and VoIP offering, (plus a small stake in Covad and some junk bonds to the same face value). press release.
The press release also suggests Covad could use some of the money to provide ADSL2.
commentary: Covad, almost the only survivor from the US telecom bubble, is obviously still struggling to find a niche. With flat revenues it is hard to see how they can go it alone. The ideal end for Covad is to be bought out entirely - perhaps by a cable operator wanting to hedge their technology bet, or more likely by Earthlink themselves which, with over 5 million subscribers, actually makes money each quarter but needs to keeping growing basic infrastructure in order to avoid being pushed around by telcos.

Covad WiMAX
January 15, 2006
Andy had a chance to read my Covad interview with Jeff Ahlquist and commented that their was no WiMAX mention.

I reached out to Andy on the matter to ask him what he knows about Covad and WiMAX. This is what he said:

Covad already has Voice and DSL. WiMAX means they deliver the latter without the need for the telco.

Recently they bought a pre-WiMAX company and have already deployed trial service in Las Vegas. It's working beyond everyone's expectations are the reports I'm getting.

Many people feel the LECs will buy all the WiMAX licenses in the US so that they can prevent any real competition. Hopefully a company like Covad has deep enough pockets to play in the WiMAX game and be a big factor in reducing broadband prices and expanding options.

Bandwidth.com and CompUSA Choose Covad's Voice Optimized Access for their VoIP Offer
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 2006--Covad Communications Group, Inc. (AMEX:DVW), a leading national provider of integrated voice and data communications, today announced that it has been chosen to be a preferred DSL and T-1 provider to Bandwidth.com for its voice over IP solution, to be sold through an agreement with CompUSA.

"We are very pleased to be a preferred provider to Bandwidth.com as it partners with CompUSA to launch this exciting new voice solution," said Lisa Graham, vice president of wholesale sales for Covad. "Covad has a strong relationship with both companies and we look forward to helping them succeed in this venture."

Under the terms of the partnership announced at the Spring 2006 VON Conference last week, Bandwidth.com will launch its voice over IP solution targeting small businesses through CompUSA's retail locations, commercial sales and website. The service is a fully hosted IP telephony solution that incorporates Bandwidth.com's robust platform and feature set and will be available over Covad T-1 and SDSL voice-optimized access (VOA). AT&T's merger with BellSouth not viewed as positive for small businesses, poll shows
Monday March 20, 1:35 pm ET

AT&T Inc.'s plan to merge with BellSouth Corp. is seen as a development that will not work in favor of San Antonio's small-business community, according to the majority of individuals who participated in an online Business Pulse poll.

Slightly more than half of the San Antonio Business Journal readers who responded to the survey say San Antonio-based AT&T's (NYSE: T - News) planned $67 billion stock merger with BellSouth (NYSE: BLS - News) in Atlanta will lead to less competition in the marketplace, rising prices, less technological innovation and poor customer service.

(The online poll is not scientific and the results represent only a snap shot of some readers' opinions.)

AT&T officials, however, disagree with the negative assessments of the merger and have long maintained that there is sufficient competition in the marketplace as evidenced by the full slate of services offered by cable, wireless carriers and competing local phone companies.

In 1984, the courts broke up AT&T Corp. into a long-distance company and seven regional Bell operating companies: Southwestern Bell, Pacific Telesis, Ameritech, BellSouth, U.S. West, NYNEX and Bell Atlantic.

Since then, Southwestern Bell -- which changed its name to SBC Communications Inc. -- undertook an acquisition strategy to acquire fellow Bells Pacific Telesis and Ameritech and former parent company AT&T Corp. SBC officially changed its name to AT&T on Nov. 18, 2005, and is aggressively re-branding itself as the new AT&T.

By merging with BellSouth, a number of online participants of the Business Pulse survey said AT&T's plan is tantamount to the re-monopolization of the former Ma Bell.

Several survey participants attributed the overall growth in technological innovation the telecommunications industry is enjoying today to the break up of the old monopoly and the resulting competition. If AT&T is allowed to proceed with the merger, it could stifle healthy competition, one survey participant said.

The merger still needs shareholder and regulatory approval in five states and with the Justice Department and Federal Communications Commission.

About 41 percent of those who participated in the survey said the merger would be a positive development for the small-business community. Many said that AT&T's move is simply a response to the overall consolidation in the telecommunications industry.

About 8 percent of those responding to the poll were undecided.

Market Report -- Short Stories (DVW)
Covad Needham & Co upgrades Hold to Buy. Target $3. Firm is saying they have become increasingly convinced that Covad mgmt will aggressively execute on its goal of making the company EBITDA-positive in Q3'06, and that the current leverage in DVW's earnings model could get us there sooner rather than later. They also believe that Covad's deepening ties with Internet service providers such as EarthLink could potentially expand to other major portals, as their relations with the RBOCs and mainstream broadband providers become increasingly contentious.

Covad Communications Shares Climb After Analyst Upgrades the Stock on Expense Controls

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Covad Communications Group Inc. climbed to a 52-week high Monday, after an analyst upgraded the communications service provider and said the company's management continues to aggressively manage costs, steering it toward profitability.

Needham analyst Greg Mesniaeff upgraded the San Jose, Calif., company to "Buy" from "Hold," and said in a client note he is "increasingly convinced" the company will execute its goal of posting positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization -- known as EBITDA, an indicator of financial performance -- in the third quarter.

"We also believe that Covad's deepening ties with Internet service providers such as EarthLink could potentially expand to other major portals," the analyst added. Covad had said last week it received $50 million in financing from Earthlink Inc. to fund the expansion of its voice services to new markets.

Covad shares climbed 20 cents, or 11 percent, to $1.94 in afternoon trading on the American Stock Exchange. In the past 52 weeks, the stock has changed hands between 65 cents and $1.80.

The company's technology uses existing telephone lines to provide broadband Internet access, and its main clients are Internet service providers. Mesniaeff added the company is one of the few providers of alternative telecommunications broadband infrastructure.
