De verkoop van Office-software en -clouddiensten ging bij bedrijven met 11 procent vooruit en voor consumenten met 7 procent omhoog.

Apple vervangt hoofd van hardwareafdeling, die gaat werken aan mysterieus ‘nieuw project’

Apple maakte maandag met een persbericht zelf bekend dat het een nieuwe senior vicepresident Hardware Engineering heeft. John Ternus vervangt in die functie Dan Riccio, die een ‘nieuwe rol krijgt binnen een nieuw project’.

Apple blijft voorlopig op de vlakte over wat de nieuwe rol van Riccio wordt binnen het bedrijf. ‘Een nieuwe rol die focust op een nieuw project en rapporteert aan CEO Tim Cook’, valt te lezen in het persbericht.

Heel wat experts vermoeden dat Riccio zich zal bezighouden met de plannen van Apple voor een elektrische zelfrijdende auto.

Blackberry and Chinese search engine giant Baidu have agreed to expand a partnership that aims to give automakers the tools they need to launch next-generation connected and autonomous vehicles in China.

Under the deal, Baidu’s high-definition maps will be integrated into Blackberry’s QNX Neutrino Real-Time Operating System. The embedded system will be mass produced in the upcoming GAC New Energy Aion models from the electric vehicle arm of GAC Group, one of the country’s top three automakers that produces more 2 million vehicles a year.

The aim of this new, expanded partnership is to “provide car manufacturers with a clear and fast path to the production of autonomous vehicles, with safety and security as the top priority,” according to a statement from Wang Yunpeng, senior director of the technology department of Baidu’s Intelligent Driving Group.

The agreement builds on the two companies January 2018 agreement to make BlackBerry QNX’s operating system the foundation for Baidu’s ‘Apollo’ autonomous driving open platform.

The deal with Baidu also helps Blackberry continue to carve out market share in China, where it’s a more recent entrant. Last year, Blackberry announced QNX would be integrated into Tesla rival Xpeng’s electric vehicles in China.

“With BlackBerry QNX’s embedded software as its foundation, Baidu has made significant progress as part of its Apollo platform in establishing a commercial ecosystem for innovative technologies that OEMs can leverage for their next generation vehicles,” Dhiraj Handa, vice president of channel, partners and APAC, BlackBerry Technology Solutions, said in a statement.

Baidu’s autonomous driving program, known as Apollo, has been described as the “an Android for smart driving.” The Apollo program has landed more than hundred manufacturing and supplier partners. Baidu has also been busy testing autonomous driving and launch a robotaxi fleet in September.

The deal also comes on the heels of Baidu’s push beyond automotive software and into the production of vehicles. Baidu announced earlier this month that it plans to set up a new company to produce electric vehicles with the help of Chinese automaker Geely. Baidu will provide so-called smart driving technologies while Geely handles will the design, engineering and manufacturing of the vehicles.

This is will be a long article mostly on Tesla's (TSLA) FSD (Full Self-Driving) effort. It will start with something interesting: Soon, a sort of Tesla FSD event will take place. But it won't stop there.

Tesla's approach still doesn't use high-definition human-curated maps or high-precision positioning (which needs those maps and LIDAR). Hence, the problem it has to solve remains much more difficult than the one Waymo and Cruise are solving. Some of the disengagements we see on videos are a direct consequence of this. For instance, Waymo and Cruise have perfect knowledge regarding lanes and their exact positioning, curvature and direction, so on turns they don't make the errors we observed on the sample video earlier. Still, I should say that in my opinion Tesla's solution is already including mapping (though not high-precision) in its driving decisions (not just navigation, but in the interpretation of the road and lanes being influenced by map data as a kind of "ground truth").

Still, to a large extent, what I said in my article titled "2 Self-Driving Cars Walk Into A Bar..." more than three years ago remains true even today, even with Tesla's new structural approach (which, again, is much better than the previous approach). Moreover, adopting a solution that provides a LIDAR-like starting point only puts Tesla near the starting point and many years behind what the leaders are doing. This isn't wishful (negative) thinking. What Tesla can achieve today is not on a par with what Waymo could achieve in 2014. By then Google already was launching a small pod without steering wheel (firefly) which drove autonomously.

Ik vermoed toch echt dat Tesla over gaat op HD maps binnen afzienbare tijd......... XPENG laat zien hoe het moet, net als Cruies en Waymo. Het zou Elon sieren als hij zijn ongelijk erkent en niet te lang vasthoudt aan z’n eigen visie. Die was tot op heden subliem om snel marktaandeel te winnen en kapitaal te vergaren door koperes vooruit te laten betalen voor FSD features. Maar de tijd dringt en men heeft betaald voor L4 niet voor L3 of L2,5.

Ook voor Elon begint de tijd te dringen door al die nieuwe autofabrikanten zoals NIO, XPENG, Li Auto, etc.

Maak er een mooie dag van, 24k in 1 uur dus weinig spektakel, maar zoals gezegd bij enige koopdruk en volume ligt de weg naar boven open..... maar dan hebben we meer nodig dan een paar particulieren beleggers.

Ook BAIC een ander chinees bedrijf is groot aandeelhouder in Daimler.

Uitspraak Ola : Chinese autokopers die niet op vakantie konden, hebben het rampjaar gered.

Tesla marktaandeel 0,8% maar een beurswaarde zo groot als BMW GM FCA VW en Daimler samen.
