UK independent Premier Oil is in serious talks with Norway’s BW Offshore about the supply of a floating production, storage and offloading vessel for its $1.5 billion Sea Lion project off the Falkland Islands.
Industry sources said SBM Offshore — which was originally expected to provide the 80,000 barrels per day FPSO, having completed a front-end engineering and design exercise — is understood to be out of the running.
On Sea Lion, Premier and BW “have not signed anything yet”, according to a source, but the two parties are said to be “getting quite close” to concluding a deal.
It is unclear why SBM is no longer involved. However, one view in the market is that because the company is now allowed to compete for Petrobras projects in Brazil — the world’s biggest FPSO market — Sea Lion has become much less of a priority than when the floater market was in the doldrums.
Upstream was told that, after hearing about SBM’s change of heart, BW approached Premier about working on Sea Lion and the two companies agreed to progress talks further.
One source argued that, compared to SBM, “BW is probably more suited to Premier in the way that they work”.
