Following the announcement by United States Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross that exemptions from metal tariffs for Canada, Mexico and the European Union will not continue past midnight tonight, Mexico’s economy ministry vowed to slam US imports with equivalent measures, including pork bellies, grapes, apples and flat steel, until duties for imports to the US are removed.
Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland will reveal Ottawa's countermeasures at a press conference at 7:30 pm CET.
Earlier in the day in Paris, Ross announced that a permanent exemption for the EU was not negotiated and steel and aluminum tariffs against imports from the bloc will go into force at midnight tonight. NAFTA signatories Canada and Mexico are to be hit with the measures as well.
