Triton helps AMG Mining to boost graphite reserves
On the strength of its new alliance with Australia’s Triton Minerals Ltd, the German concern AMG Mining AG (GK) is poised to revive the Ancuabe graphite project in Cabo Delgado province in north east Mozambique.
The integrated graphite producer, chaired by Frank Berger, has been active in Africa since 1965 through the joint venture Zimbabwe German Graphite Mines Ltd, which turns out 3,000 tpa. It acquired an operating license for the Ancuabe mine and processing plant in 2012.
The mine and plant were shut down in 1999 when the graphite price was at a low. In 2008, Imerys (France) won a tender for Ancuabe’s licenses but then abandoned the project, considering its reserves were too limited. GK reckons the reserves amount to one million tons and the production potential of its local affiliate, GK Acuabe Graphite Mine SA, at 6,000 tpa. Due to the cost of electricity, far too expensive for the level of reserves, the mine hadn’t been revived up to now. But because its power lines have since been connected to the national grid and due to the alliance GK forged with Triton (run by Brad Boyle) the mine’s revival can now be envisaged. The agreement, valid for two years, will give GK access to more reserves in the area.
