The cauldron for the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games in 2015 will be made from ArcelorMittal Dofasco steel, the company announced Friday. The cauldron will be lit July 10 to officially open the Pan Am Games, and again on August 7, to open the Parapan Am Games. A second cauldron will stay in Hamilton as a legacy.
The company's CEO, Sean Donnelly, called the cauldron the "ultimate symbol" of the games.
"When we light the most iconic aspect of the games, the cauldron ... people in 380 million households in the Americas, in 41 countries, will see the quality of your product," said Saäd Rafi, CEO of the Toronto 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games Organizing Committee, at the announcement Friday.
The cauldron will be made of 10 types of steel, the company said, including: hot roll, the company's trademarked Galvalume, cold-roll enameling and tubular. It will weigh about 14 tonnes.
The company previously provided steel for the London 2012 Olympics, for a sculpture by artist Anish Kapoor, and also for the Fifa World Cups in Brazil and South Africa.
