Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. is planning to build a new semiconductor facility in Singapore to tackle a global supply shortage, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter.
No definitive decision has yet been made, and details of the plan are still under discussion, but early talks involve a plant that would cost billions of dollars, one of the people said. It is also known that the Singapore government could help finance the plant, and negotiations are underway with the government's Economic Development Board.
Previously, TSMC indicated that consumer electronics demand is slowing down due to the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, its geopolitical implications, and the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. That's why, added one of the sources, "securing supply chains for essential components is a key issue for the Singapore government, and it is following in the footsteps of the US and Japan."
