Bam Construction has started work on the first part of an € 88m upgrade of Edinburgh Airport to cater for an expected jump in passenger numbers.
Work at Scotland’s busiest airport has begun on a three-storey extension that will include six new gates.
The expansion, due to be completed by next summer, will also include extended immigration, customs and international reclaim facilities and new shops and toilets.
The upgrade is designed to cater for an expected increase in passenger numbers, which are forecast to hit 16.5m by 2021. In 2016, Edinburgh Airport handled 12.4m passengers.
Bam was awarded the first part of the upgrade project, with the second package currently out to tender.
The expansion is part of the airport’s € 241m capital investment programme to support growth.
Edinburgh Airport chief operating officer Adrian Witherow said: “This is a major investment for the capital and Scotland and further establishes Edinburgh Airport as one of the most innovative and forward-thinking airports in the UK.”
He added: “As Scotland’s gateway to the world, it’s vital that we have first-class infrastructure and we will continue to invest in that, creating more jobs, supporting the economy and opening up Scotland to the world.”
