Apple Inc.’s charm offensive continues in India, where Chief Executive Tim Cook is on a visit this week aimed at ramping up sales in the world’s second most populous country.
The Cupertino, Calif. firm on Thursday announced the opening of a new office in Hyderabad that will develop mapping services for its iPhones and other products.
The new facility will be located in a large IT campus called WaveRock, home to several tech firms, and the effort will
“accelerate Maps development and create up to 4,000 jobs” in partnership with a local firm called RMSI, Apple said in a statement.
The announcement comes a day after the technology titan said it will open a center in Bangalore, to foster the creation of apps for its iOS mobile software.
Apple is eager to replicate the success it has had in China in India. The South Asian nation is similarly a big, developing economy, where rising incomes could make iPhones attainable despite their high cost relative to other handsets running on Android, the mobile operating system from rival Alphabet Inc.’s Google.
Price is one of Apple’s key challenges, given that 70% of smartphones sold last year in India cost less than $150. Most iPhone models cost more than $500 in the country.
Mr. Cook is set to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi this week, where he is likely to discuss Apple’s proposal that it be permitted to open its own stores and sell secondhand phones in India.
Its own stores would help raise the profile of its gadgets, while cheaper phones would likely be a hit with price-sensitive consumers.
Apple in 2012 introduced its own service to replace Google’s mapping software, prompting criticism from users worldwide who complained of misplaced labels and other problems.
The revelation about the new Hyderabad office prompted some users in poke fun at Apple’s previous mapping troubles.
“Tim Cook is in India by accident because he used Apple Maps,” Tweeted one user in Mumbai.
