Baidu expands maps beyond its borders
by Anthony Wallace on 15 March, 2016
Chinese internet search engine and mapping company, Baidu, has launched its webmapping services beyond its Chinese borders and into Japan, Thailand, South Korea and Singapore. The move have seen analysts suggesting that Baidu is confident it can compete with its biggest mapping competitors outside of China, such as Alphabet’s Google Maps.
Baidu (not to be confused with the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System) is China’s most widely-used web services provider, and 2015 its doman
www.baidu.com was ranked the fifth most popular website worldwide.
While the move into other parts of Asia could be seen merely as an offering to allow Chinese citizens who travel into these popular areas to access Baidu’s maps abroad, investors are seeing this as a larger ploy to take on the global mapping market, as well as integration with Baidu’s other web and media services.
The move comes after an announcement from Baidu in 2015 detailing an agreement with HERE to provide Baidu with maps outside of its home market.Alibaba: Map Remains An Overlooked Asset
Mar. 6, 2016
Chinatechnews reported that Alibaba's (NYSE:BABA) AutoNavi unit now has over 500m total users while its active user base has doubled in 2015. I think this is a positive data point that highlights the value of AutoNavi to BABA despite the increased competition from Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) whose map has more than 300m active users. Worth highlighting that BABA accounts AutoNavi as part of its "others revenue", which saw a +62% y/y organic growth in the December quarter. In my view, AutoNavi is an overlooked asset by many investors, given that mobile map is an essential platform for any internet company that is looking to have an edge in the fast growing O2O and location-based services/advertising space.
.....
Where I see AutoNavi differentiates from Navinfo is that it collects its own road data and points of interest. This allows BABA to have better control over the quality of its map and tighter integration with its ecosystem.

Alibaba wilde ook Here Maps kopen.
De concurrent Baidu werkt al met Here Maps.
Google Maps is geen optie.
