Awareness, marktgroei

- Wristwatch icon Timex, which will introduce its own new fitness-oriented smart watch in October, called Apple's announcement exciting. "The market is building, it's defining itself," said Shawn Cummings, Timex senior director of innovation. "Having a large company come in really improves and helps build awareness for all consumers."

- James Park, the CEO of San Francisco's Fitbit, said that the "more people learn about the benefits of tracking health and fitness, the more Fitbit's products and solutions will resonate with consumers."

- Jawbone, also of San Francisco, said in a blog post Tuesday that the Apple Watch is "good news for us" because the device will connect to Jawbone's fitness-data collecting software. The Apple Watch can also be plugged into the existing iPhone Health app so data can be shared with third-party apps.

- Parks Associates estimated smart watch sales would grow from 18 million this year to 121 million by 2018. Parks Associates made its projection based on Apple's Watch joining new smart watches coming this year from Samsung, LG Electronics and Google's Motorola.

Volkswagen verwendet TomTom-Karten

Volkswagen verwendet künftig Kartenmaterial von TomTom. Zunächst aber nur in den USA.

Für das zweite Quartal 2015 plant Volkswagen ein Update seines Infotainmentsystems. Dann sollen sowohl ältere als auch neue Fahrzeug-Modellreihen den neuen „Modularen Infotaiment Baukasten“ MIB II bekommen. Vor allem geht es dabei um neue Funktionen wie App Connect mit Mirrorlink, Apple Carplay und Android Auto (wobei das exakte Datum der Integration der einzelnen Mobile-Plattformen noch nicht feststeht).
VW zeigt Gestensteuerung und App Connect

Eine wichtige Änderung dieses Frühjahr-2015-Updates: Volkswagen wird das Navigationssystem erstmals mit Kartenmaterial von TomTom ausliefern (die Online-Echtzeitverkehrsinformationen kommen aber vorerst noch von Inrix). Als erstes werden VW Jetta, VW Passat (der US-Passat ist nicht ganz identisch mit dem in Deutschland verkauften Passat) und VW Beetle in den USA das neue Multimediasystem anbieten. Wann erste Modelle in Deutschland beziehungsweise Europa erhältlich sein werden, steht derzeit aber noch nicht fest.

Es ist das erste Mal, dass Volkswagen ein Navigationssystem mit Karten von TomTom anbietet. Die Zusammenarbeit hat laut TomTom eine Laufzeit von mehreren Jahren.

TomTom setzt bei der Herstellung seiner Karten unter anderem auf das Crowd-Sourcing-Prinzip, um Änderungen im Straßennetz zu entdecken. Dabei können Hunderte Millionen von Nutzern sowohl GPS-Daten als auch Kartenänderungen teilen.

Proficiat aandeelhouders TomTom: op eigen kracht koers TomTom op korte termijn naar 8 euro of toch binnenkort naar 30 euro.

According to some analysts I spoke with, TomTom is back on the radar screen of investors again. Personally I think the company is still an interesting M&A target for Apple or even Google (NASDAQ:GOOG).

GM open to working with Google on self-driving car technology

DETROIT, Jan 12 (Reuters) - General Motors Co is open to working with Google Inc on developing self-driving car technology, the chief technology officer for the U.S. automaker said on Monday.

"I'm not in charge of deciding what we will and won't do, but I'd say we'd certainly be open to having a discussion with them," Jon Lauckner said in an interview at the Detroit auto show.

Lauckner made his comments two days before the head of Google's self-driving car project, Chris Urmson, is scheduled to speak at a conference held annually in conjunction with the auto show. Urmson is expected to announce his company's plans to seek partnerships within the auto industry.

Car makers including GM are racing to develop features that will make cars safer to drive. The longer-term vision includes cars that will largely drive themselves.

Lauckner said any automaker teaming up with Google would need to establish how the relationship would work.

"You have to figure out how would something like that actually work," he said. "Would it be something where it would be an opportunity to work together in a joint development agreement?"

"I'd say probably anybody who's interested ought to at least go over and kick the tires," Lauckner said.

He said GM has worked with many of the people who are now in Google's self-driving car program. Urmson was at Carnegie Mellon when the university worked with GM on a self-driving SUV that won a DARPA challenge in 2007.

"I'd be completely surprised if Google doesn't have something to offer," Lauckner said.
