sign Mifare NFC licensing deal

NXP Semiconductors and Gemalto have signed a global strategic licensing agreement for NXP’s Mifare technology which will enable Gemalto to integrate both Mifare DESFire and Mifare Plus into its SIM cards.

"Mifare is already at the heart of contactless infrastructures around the world," says Henri Ardevol, vice president and general manager of secure transactions at NXP. "We are proud to collaborate with Gemalto to offer the convenience of this technology to a new target of five billion mobile phone users."

"Adding the Mifare capability to Gemalto's NFC application portfolio is key for the mass deployment of mobile contactless," adds Rémi de Fouchier, Gemalto's senior vice president of trusted services management. "We are enthused that more and more consumers around the world will enjoy the simplicity and convenience of waving their mobile phone for couponing and stored value payment and transport services."

SoftBank chooses Gemalto for NFC trial

Japanese operator SoftBank Mobile is to partner with Gemalto on a NFC trial in the first quarter of this year. Gemalto claims the trial “is the first in Asia to enable secure mobile NFC transactions from a choice of different credit card accounts.” The program also offers users the option to perform NFC transactions from two credit card issuers - Orient Corporation, the largest service provider of MasterCard PayPass in Japan, and Credit Saison, another Japanese financial institution.

Gemalto and STMicroelectronics partner on NFC

Working together to improve the security of mobile contactless apps.

Specifically, they will develop a secure NFC application based on the ST33 EAL5+ chipset from ST and Gemalto’s various mobile security software products.

The system will be available both as a System-in-Package (SIP) version combined with ST's ST21NFCA NFC controller, or as a stand-alone secure element in DFN or micro-SD packages.

"ST is delighted to partner with Gemalto on new and innovative products that will fully benefit from ST's broad NFC portfolio, which ranges from an NFC router to advanced SIM and Secure Element ICs," said Marie-France Florentin, General Manager, Secure Microcontrollers Division, STMicroelectronics.
