The European Commission (EC) passed the ISA Smart Speed Assist regulations and will be formally implemented in July 2022.
Japan recently released the ASV Advanced Safety Vehicle Promotion Plan report, which includes content related to the automatic speed control device (ISA). Japan roll out and implement ISA mandatory regulations between 2025 and 2030.
Canada and Australia are also conducting ISA testing. Israel, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom are also considering similar ISA legislation.
The United States also attaches great importance to the speed limit of trucks. In May 2021, it reintroduced the Safe Truck Speed Act.
There are no ISA related regulations in the United States. But truck speed limits have recently received legislative attention again.
On May 25, 2021, members of the House of Representatives Lucy McBath and John Katko recently reintroduced the "Large Trucks Safe Running Speed Act." The draft bill proposes to authorize the U.S. Department of Transportation to formulate regulations requiring all new commercial vehicles (CMVs) to be equipped with speed limiters and speed-limiting technologies that have been installed on CMVs manufactured after 1992.
(1) All new commercial vehicles with a total weight of 26,001 pounds or more are equipped with speed limiting technology
(2) Use any existing speed-limiting technology that has been installed on such vehicles in operation,
(3) Set the speed limit technology to a maximum speed of 65 miles per hour.
