Chinese rail freight to Europe set to double in 2018

Global Construction Review reported that the annual flow of rail freight between China and Europe by the end in 2018 is expected to be twice that of 2017, reaching 6,000 trips compared with about 3,000 last year. As of November, there were 11 rail routes between 56 Chinese and 49 European cities. The first journey was made in March 2011, since when more than 10,000 trips have been completed. Most journeys are between German and Chinese cities, but there are longer journeys; the longest of all runs between Yiwu and Madrid, a 12,874km route that holds the record for the longest in the world, ahead of the Yiwu to London branch. The impetus for the development of the rail system has come from China, which presently runs a $176bn trade surplus with the EU.

However, Europe exports almost $200bn of goods to China a year, and there is currently a 350% annual increase in European goods making the return trip east by rail. The rail links are now the basis of a China–Europe postal service. A trip across the Eurasian landmass now takes about 16 days to complete, although it is thought that this could be cut to 14 days if Poland’s rail infrastructure were to be improved.

In particular, more cranes and storage space are required at Ma?aszewicze, a Polish village and dry port near the Belorussian border where trains have to switch from Russian broad gauge to European standard gauge. The other break of gauge, at Khorgos on China’s border with Kazakhstan, is presently the biggest dry port in the world.

Rheinmetall Automotive to supply electric vehicle components in China

Rheinmetall Automotive has, together with its Chinese joint venture partner HUAYU Automotive Systems opened yet another production location. Around 16,000 square meters, the new plant of HASCO KSPG (Guangde) Nonferrous Components Co Ltd is situated in Guangde in the Chinese province of Anhui, northwest of Shanghai. This is the sixth location of the joint venture in China, and its range of products will include aluminum cylinder heads. With an annual production volume of around 5.5 million units, Rheinmetall Automotive is China’s biggest manufacturer of cylinder heads. The new plant will bring the company’s production capacity to over one million units in 2018.

Initially, the plant will generate sales of 560 million RMB (equivalent to around EUR 70 million). Over the next five years, annual cylinder head production is scheduled to almost double.

In addition, the plant will be the first within the joint ventures with HASCO to use the sophisticated and premium-grade low-pressure casting technique for the production of electric housings for electric vehicles destined for the Chinese market.

Mr Horst Binnig CEO of Rheinmetall Automotive AG, commented on the occasion of the plant opening in Guangde said that “With this new plant, we are laying the foundation for the lasting participation of our companies in a strongly expanding and sustainable submarket within the mobility segment. China to restrict auto industry investment – China state planner

Reuters reported China's state planner had approved tougher new regulations on investment in the auto industry that spooked carmakers earlier this year, as Beijing tightens the screws on firms adding manufacturing capacity. The National Development and Reform Commission also said that it would ban the establishment of new independent enterprises making only traditional combustion engines, amid a wider push towards electric cars.

A draft of the policy alarmed some foreign carmakers in September, who worried Beijing was trying to trigger consolidation of the country's flabby auto industry through mergers and strategic cooperation.

EU backs duties on imports of e-bikes from China – Report

Reuters reported that EU governments voted to impose duties on Chinese electric bicycles to curb cheap imports that European producers say benefit from unfair subsidies and are flooding the market. The European Commission, which is investigating on behalf of the 28 EU members, has proposed that definitive or final tariffs of between 18.8 and 79.3 % should apply for all e-bikes coming from China. The anti-dumping and anti-subsidy duties are the latest in a series of EU measures against Chinese exports ranging from solar panels to steel, which have sparked strong words from Beijing.

Unlike the United States, the European Union has not launched a trade war against China, but it shares US concerns about forced technology transfers and Chinese state subsidies.

The electric bicycle imports are already subject to the duties set on a provisional basis in July. Definitive duties typically apply for five years.

Taiwan's Giant, one of the world's largest bicyclemakers, which has factories in China as well as in the Netherlands, would be subject to a rate of 24.8 %.

The Commission found Chinese exports of e-bikes to the European Union more than tripled from 2014 until September 2017. Their market share rose to 35 %, while their average prices fell by 11 %.

The world's tallest buildings are all in China - Report

The Urban Developer reported that China has maintained its dominance as the most prolific country when it comes to the construction of tall buildings, with 88 completions of buildings 200 metres or higher. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has analysed the total number of completions of buildings over 200 meters in height on a global scale. China's bullish 88 completions for the year marks a record, surpassing the 80 completions in 2017 and representing a 61.5 per percent of the global total of buildings surpassing 200 metres erected in 2018.

Shenzhen recorded 14 completions, making this the third year in a row in which the city accounted for the world’s largest number of 200-metre-plus completions, and comprising nearly 10 per cent of the global total.

Australia recorded just one 200-metre-plus building completion, the Victoria One in Melbourne, Australia. The 271 metre skyscraper, built by Probuild for Jeff Xu’s Golden Age Group, was designed by architects Elenberg Fraser and comprises 78 levels featuring 643 apartments, 163 car spaces and Melbourne’s largest internal car-stacking machine.

The development also features an indoor pool and gym, private dining and living spaces, and a club lounge exclusive to residents of the top eight floors. It is of little surprise Chinese cities top the charts for overambitious construction, benefiting from a credit binge and its commanding export-led economy.

Shenzhen, one of the fastest growing cities in China, has recorded record housing prices, jumping more than 30 per cent over the year, benefiting from its welcoming policy towards migrants from elsewhere in China.

China gaat belasting verlagen

Chinese aluminium giants to meet today to discuss market slump - Report

Reuters, citing three sources familiar with the matter, reported that representatives from China’s biggest aluminium producers will hold a meeting on Friday in the southern region of Guangxi to discuss slumping demand and falling prices. The China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association (CNIA) called the meeting, which will be held in Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi region, to discuss the current state of the market. The meeting comes as a protracted price decline leaves smelters struggling to turn a profit, even after significant output cuts. Hongqiao Group, Aluminum Corp of China (Chalco) are reported to be going to Guangxi to attend the gathering.

The producers held a similar gathering in late 2015 when the ShFE prices went down to below CNY 10,000. At the December 2015 meeting, Chinese aluminium smelters agreed to cut 500,000 tonnes of capacity by the end of the year to whittle down the glut. Some 4.41 million tonnes had already been cut by that point.

Chinese automakers performance in November

Gasgoo reported that China's vehicle sales in November reached 2,547,800 units, climbing 7.05% over a month ago, while presented year-on-year (YoY) decline of 13.86%, according to the data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. For the first eleven months, the YTD vehicle sales for the world's largest auto market edge down 1.65% from the year-ago period, showing YoY downturn the second time of the year.

SAIC Motor
The top 3 subsidiaries by Nov. sales for SAIC Motor were still SAIC Volkswagen, SAIC GM and SAIC-GM-Wuling whose monthly sales all presented YoY downturn for the third month in a row. Apart from SAIC Motor PV, Naveco and Sunwin Bus, the other subsidiaries all faced negative YoY growth last month. SAIC Motor PV has maintained a blooming growth momentum this year. The Roewe i5, hitting the market on October 26, had a sales volume of 12,000 units in November. Besides, the sales of the MG HS SUV have exceeded 10,000 units after it went on sales at the end of September. In November, SAIC Volkswagen still achieved a positive month-on-month (MoM) sales growth of 10% despite its YoY decrease. Aside from such hotter-selling models as the Lavida and the Tiguan, the sales of the new-generation Passat reached nearly 17,000 units with a YoY jump of 22%. The Volkswagen Tharu SUV, launched by the joint venture on the last day of October, pushed the sales to a higher level to some degree. By the end of November, SAIC-GM has suffered YoY decrease for 6 straight months.

Dongfeng Motor Group
By the end of November, Dongfeng Motor Group has seen its YTD sales present YoY drop for five consecutive months. Meanwhile, the YoY drop has been increased to 6.68% in November from 0.24% in July. As to the Nov. sales, the automaker also suffered an obvious YoY decline of 20.25%. Dongfeng Honda's sales climbed 6.96% from the previous year, while the other major Sino-Japanese joint venture Dongfeng Nissan saw its Nov. sales slide 8.65%. Two Sino-French joint ventures Dongfeng Renault and DPCA met with striking YoY dip of 81.57% and 68.56% respectively.

GAC Group
GAC Motor boasted a YoY increase of 4.28% in year-to-date (YTD) sales. The sales driver Trumpchi GS4 had suffered substantial decline in the first half of the year under the fierce competition against such rivals as the Haval H6 and the Geely Boyue who promoted their change-over or facelift, while it saw the sales pick up after its facelift was launched in June. By the end of November, the sales of the Trumpchi GS4 have aggregated over 220,000 units. GAC Honda has completed 89.66% of its 750,000-unit yearly sales target. The Accord, the Fit and the CRIDER were quite popular with their sales amounting to 18,648 units, 11,442 units and 13,779 units last month. Besides, all three models achieved double-digit YoY increase in November sales, according to Honda's China sales report. The other two major Sino-Japanese joint ventures—GAC Toyota and GAC Mitsubishi both accomplished double-digit YoY growth in Jan.-Nov. sales. As to CV arms, both GAC Hino and GAC BYD have fulfilled their original annual sales goal.

Changan Automobile
Changan Automobile announced that its Nov. sales tumbled 39.6% over a year earlier to 161,458 units, the seventh month in a row for the automaker to face year-on-year drop. The sales of Changan Automobile's self-owned brand amounted to 118,902 units in the past November among which 5,278 units were new energy vehicles. As to the performance of specific models in November, the sales of the CS55 and CS75 SUVs reached 15,777 units and 12,036 units respectively. The CS35 Series had a sales volume of 12,751 units. Meanwhile, a total of 9,343 EADO sedans were delivered last month. The automaker didn’t reveal the sales of the Raeton sedans. Changan Ford saw its YTD sales halved over the previous year to 359,972 units. Changan Ford's annual sales peaked at around 957,000 units in 2016, yet failed to keep the rising momentum or even stay flat afterwards with its sales dropping 14% YoY to around 827,000 units in 2017. After compiled the sales data released by Changan Automobile each month, Gasgoo found out that Changan Ford has experienced YoY drop for 11 consecutive months from the beginning of 2018.

Geely
For the first eleven months, Geely saw its YTD sales jump 29% from the year-ago period to 1,407,505 units, completing 89% of the 1.58 million-unit annual sales target. There were a total of 9 models whose Nov. sales exceeded 10,000 units. However, apart from the Geely Binrui and the Binyue which hit the market on August 30 and October 31 respectively as well as the Vision X3, the other six models all presented YoY decline in monthly sales, among which the Emgrand, the all-new Vision, the Boyue, the Emgrand GS and the Vision SUV all had double-digit YoY decline. In spite of the negative growth of several sales drivers, Geely still accomplished positive YoY increase last month thanks to the favorable performance made by certain new models. The sales of Lynk & Co 01, 02 and 03 reached 5,302 units, 3,008 units and 4,011 units respectively last month. By the end of November, the premium car brand has delivered 114,629 vehicles this year. In addition, a total of 10,575 NEVs were sold by the automaker in November.

Chery Holding
Chery Holding posted an evident MoM sales growth of 16% with 73,910 vehicles sold in November, hitting a new high in monthly sales of the year, the group said. Last month, the group saw its NEV sales leap 86.7% year on year (YoY) to 11,382 units and export volume climb 5% over a year ago to 10,675 units. By the end of November in 2018, Chery Holding sold 669,573 vehicles in total, a YoY increase of 13.8%. It is worth mentioning that its cumulative export volume jumped 18.7% from a year ago to 118,017 units, which has already surpassed the total volume for 2017. The NEV is the fastest-growing business sector that gained a splendid YoY growth of 211.4% with 81,266 units sold through November. It is reported that Chery has formed its own NEV R&D system and expects to achieve a NEV sales volume exceeding 200,000 units by 2020.

Chinese scientists turn copper into gold

A team of Chinese researchers have turned cheap copper into a new material “almost identical” to gold, according to a study published in peer-reviewed journal Science Advances on Saturday. The discovery will significantly reduce the use of rare, expensive metals in factories. Professor Sun Jian and colleagues at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Liaoning, shot a copper target with a jet of hot, electrically charged argon gas. The fast-moving ionised particles blasted copper atoms off the target. The atoms cooled down and condensed on the surface of a collecting device, producing a thin layer of sand. Each grain of the sand had a diameter of only a few nanometres, or a thousandth of the size of a bacterium.

The researchers put the material in a reaction chamber and used it as a catalyst to turn coal to alcohol, a sophisticated and difficult chemical process that only precious metals can handle efficiently. The copper nano particles achieved catalytic performance extremely similar to that of gold or silver. The results proved that after processing, metal copper can transform from ‘chicken’ to ‘phoenix’

Copper cannot function as well as gold in industrial applications, mainly because there are fewer electrons, subatomic particles with negative charge, buzzing around its nucleus. These electrons are also relatively unstable, so copper tends to react more easily when combining with other chemicals. The method developed by Sun’s team can inject a large amount of energy into copper atoms and made the electrons more dense and stable. The new material can resist high temperatures, oxidisation and erosion. It is like a warrior with golden armour in a battlefield, capable of withstanding any enemy assault.
