New report predicts global shipments of GPS devices will rise to 946.7 million in 2015
A new report by IE Market Research Corporation (IEMR) predicts that global shipments of GPS device will rise to 946.7 million in 2015. The Canadian provider of market intelligence services has announced the release of its 1Q.2011 Global GPS Navigation Devices Forecast, 2008 – 2015, which indicates a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15.8%. However, the report predicts an overall decline of shipments of PNDs (Personal Navigation Devices) because “the price points and use cases for such devices is no longer compelling”.
IEMR’s report provides quantitative forecasts for the four largest segments of the global GPS devices market, including smartphones, feature phones, PNDs and factory-installed in-vehicle navigation devices. The report covers 187 countries and according to IEMR, it is the most comprehensive forecasts of its kind in the world. The company’s vice president of research, Nizar Assanie, said, “Consumers are getting used to the convenience offered by devices with GPS/LBS capability, and we forecast that global shipments of GPS/LBS devices will rise from 526.3 million in 2011 to 946.7 million in 2015.
“The key driver behind GPS navigation adoption will be smartphones,” Assanie continued. “We forecast that global shipments of smartphones with GPS/LBS capability will increase from 297.7 million in 2011 to 604.9 million in 2015. This is the biggest growth among all the categories of GPS/LBS devices.” Andrew King, vice president of business development for the EMEAregion at IEMR, added, “We are forecasting robust growth in GPS-enabled devices in Western Europe. Germany, Netherlands, and the UK will be leading the pack in this area, with shipments of GPS devices in these markets growing at about 15.1% annually for the next five years and smartphones with GPS/LBS capability growing between 17.9% – 20.1%
